If you guys are in a betting mood I say somebody blinks and picks up the phone....on Thursday.

I'd guess that tallks will restart about September 5. Pollack will finally be signed on the 8th or 9th, to basically the same deal he was asking for last week.

File this under the "gee what a surprise" department...

Pollack loses job

MONDAY QUICK HITS: Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis replaced first-round pick David Pollack in the starting lineup at strong-side linebacker with Landon Johnson Monday, the first major fallout of a holdout that reached its 11th day. Marcus Wilkins is the backup and Pollack is on the third team with rookie free agent Cedric Sullivan.

I think it's obvious they aren't going to give him any more money. I'm surprised this guy would throw a starting spot in the NFL away like that. It's going to be 500 times harder to switch positions, and earn playing time while missing all of training camp. He's going to need that guaranteed money because he sure isn't going to reach any incentives.

File this under Marvin is geting pissed file...

Marvin took his good ole time getting Chris Perry into it last year, and my guess is he will do the same with Pollack. It's interesting reading in the post how other players held out...Willi, Justin Smith (51 days) among others.

The only thing more offensive to Marvin than holding out is getting hurt. When you are healthy, if you happen to still be on the team, you just don't slip back into the same spot...you've got to beat not only the guy who replaced you, but every guy in front of you.

That means if Marcus Wilkins continues to play well, as I really think he can, and I know Landon is great and Simmons is still the best linebacker on our team, Pollack has got his work cut out for him.

I'd love to see him have to earn his stripes for a while in special teams, because if he isn't starting at linebacker, that means our other guys are doing pretty well...Wilkins never had a problem with speed or tackling. Nor did Landon

Not dressed, among others, in Monday morning's full pad workout were WR Peter Warrick and DE Duane Clemons. . . .Lewis said after deciding "to move on to his life's work," LB Allen Augustin was waived when he decided to leave camp. . .

WR Chad Johnson appeared to give Bengaldom only a major scare when he went down in a heap in a Monday morning drill as he took off on a route. After writhing on the ground for a few moments when he seemed to twist the same ankle he had scoped back in May, he twice walked off the field under his own power. Lewis called it "minor,," and said, "I see him writhe a couple of times a week." Or, as receivers coach Hue Jackson said, "He's Gumby. He's OK." . .

we knew it was going to happen eventually

I wasn't confident enough to try guessing when an actual deal would be agreed upon. Just trying to guess when one of the two sides attempts to take a pulse check by picking up the phone. I'll further guess that it will be the Bengals who make the first move, but no immediate deal will result.

Still, I can't agree with the early September prediction. At least not yet.

BTW, with each passing day the thread title cracks me up more and more. After all, almost a week has passed since we began responding in...Pollack signs today?

So why do I find this funny? Well, it reminds me of looking at the expiration date on a carton of milk. If the expiration date is the same as the current date I always assume the milk is still good. In fact, I'm so confident that I don't bother testing it first. And I remain pretty confident that things are fine if the expiration date is exceeded by only a day or two. But after a week or so I have to admit that after pouring I fully expect to find sour smelling lumps sitting atop my cereal.

In all fairness, the team doesn't comment on contract negotiations and most information we hear are from agents with an assortment of unqualified articles on other team's signings -- which routinely puts the team in villan mode.

Fair enough Kirk.... my only point was that the only information we have on the contract is mostly propaganda, (which you seem to agree with) and therefore our debates on who the villain is here is similar to debating between the two opinions of the Bush administration and Michael Moore.

Neither side is really going to be giving a fair impression of what the deal is, so we're in the dark. That being the case, let's move on.

I agree. But I also don't think we can immediately demonize the Brown family on this as some have.

The Bengals are/have been cheap on and off the field since Mike brown took over! How about the old practice facility out W. 8th street that was right next to lot filled with 55 gallon drums of who-knows-what?? How about upgrading the weight room only after 20 years. No towel service....the list is long.

Only since ML has gotten here have they tried to catch up to the times, meaning doing the basic, minimal things that any Professional sports orgainzation would do in the 21st century. The Browns have planty of revenue sharing $ to kick around, they have they stadium revenue, seat revenu, TV revenue and still will not spend the money to land a guy like Simon. Some is philosophy (sometimes I agree, don't overpay for a washed out vet) but mostly it is because they are wicked CHEAP.

BTW- they are not always right at the cap. They float well below. Only a few of the past 12 years were they right at the cap. I'll try to find data if needed.

I can't believe someone actually thinks this is not a cheap organization!?! Maybe you are a relative of the Brown's?

The Bengals are cheap. never a doubt.

Excuse me? Where's the proof?

Frugal, perhaps, but not cheap. They have been at the cap limit or very close to it every year.

Except last season per USA Today. The Bengals were 30th.

That's because of the amount of dead space we had on our salary cap.

The Browns ARE NOT cheap when it comes to paying players. The Bengals are very good at re-signing their own players to fair market deals.
