walzav29
I was watching the scouting combine yesterday, and David Pollack didn't look to good. I am no Jason White fan, but didn't he produce just as much as Pollack if not more in college? He can't even find an NFL team. Why is there so much optimism when it comes to Pollack compared to White? He ran a 4.9 40, and they say he has short arms. Where does the optimism come from? Pollacks' gameplay in the top conference in college was beyond exemplary for four years. Start there.Plus, his short burst speed was actually off the charts if I recall correctly from the combine stuff.Guys a football player, not a workout warrior. I am more than fine with that. NJ29
Pollack plays MUCH faster than he runs inn the 40. In games he coles in on running backs who run 4.4s. His game speed is off the charts. THAT's were the optimism comes from.

Where does the optimism come from?yeah pollack has crazy game speed he ran down matt jones who runs a 4.3from behind when they played arkansas. also his arms aren't noticable shorter then normal if you watch him play

Why is there so much optimism when it comes to Pollack compared to White? He ran a 4.9 40, and they say he has short arms. Where does the optimism come from? If you are into "numbers" at the combine, Pollack at 6'2" 265 lbs. ran a 3.94 sec in the Shuttle and 6.87 sec in the Cone drill. That means he is SUPER QUICK. Fabian Washington 5'11" 188 lb. CB Nebraska, who ran 4.29 in the 40, ran a 3.96 in the Shuttle. Mark Clayton, the "quick WR" from Oklahoma ran a 4.07 Shuttle and 6.95 Cones. Jason White ran a 4.22 sec Shuttle and 7.30 sec Cones. Bottom line: Pollack is SUPER QUICK, smart (30 on the Wonderlic) and a PLAYMAKER (go check his game tapes -- he makes plays and keeps hustling). Pollack has shown the willingness and ability to learn and excel at new positions. [He also has Marvin as the "teacher" for the new position.] THAT is why I'm optimist!!!!! [i don't see anything to gain from discussing the negatives of Jason White.]
HairOnFire
Switching gears a bit, I also rewatched some of the combine coverage being shown on the NFL Network and was amazed by how lean and fast Eric Ghiacuic(sp?) appeared. Best of all, he always seemed to be listed amongst the leaders whenever strength or speed rankings for the O-lineman were flashed on the screen. All things considered it was kinda fun watching the combine coverage armed with the knowledge of who went where and when. (What?)

walzav29
Attaboy BengalPappaw! That's the reasoning I was looking for. Sold. Like I said. I could care less about Jason White. I just didn't know why everyone was on Pollack's nut's. (Except for his game tape on Yahoo.com). I won't be able to take another year of swiss cheese run d. [i don't see anything to gain from discussing the negatives of Jason White.] Dang! I don't usually put a whole lot of confidence in combine times, but that is quick. Beating out highly ranked WR's and CB's. And that is with his extra weight.I still refuse to put a whole lot of weight in the combine (albeit very impressive), but my optimism for Pollack comes from his attittude. He's got a Rudy (the Notre Dame guy, who helped Frodo destroy one-eyed Willie) type drive, but with the physical ability to make it really count in the NFL. cincyhokie
I agree with the quickness aspect here. Look at it this way....if your starting LB is sprinting 40 yards on a regular basis....your defense has alot more to worry about than his slow 40 time.LB is a reaction position more than it is speed. While some of the best LBs are fast, they are more quick than they are anything. That's what makes them great.By the way, Boller had a GREAT combine workout. Look at him now. DawgNeil
How can someone compare White to Pollack? Different positions, teams, and conferences. Two utterly different players. As a UGA fan, I can't even begin to tell you how "on-the-field productive" Pollack will become. The guy just freakin knows how to find the football and get the player down.He may struggle a bit in the first few games but when he gets it down, he will be SCARY. backerman
As far a measurables go, he was about middle of the pack in the combine for his posistion in the 40 yd dash and bench press. NOt overly impressive in those events, but not bad. Where he did stand out was at the quickness and explosion drills. His first 10yds was second best, among DEs and beat out most of the LBs.His broad Jump and Vertical jump were in the top 2 at his position.IIRC no player with the exception of Carlos Rodgers had a better 20 yd shuttle and 3 cone drill time than Pollack. This includes all WRs, DBs, Lbs, RBs, etc. Now 3 or 4 guys beat him in one time or the other, but not in both. (wrs, dbs, and cbs) Needless to say he utterly smoked the other players at his position in these two drillsas well as the linebackers in these drills. (and he weighed 265 at the time) Pollacks upper body strength may have been average but he does hold the Ga record for sqauts. So his lower body strength is dominating. on the Wonderlic he scored a 30 which is an outstanding score. 2nd among all DEs. Thats just the measureables. The scary thing is that the measurables don't even begin to tell the story. He plays with incredible leverage. using his lack of height to his advantage. (he gets lower than his opponent almost evertime) His instincts are near flawless. He almost always finds the ball. And his hussle level is nigh unmatchable. His weakness is prolonged straight ahead speed. which may be exploited at LB if he has to hang with any RBs or quicker TEs for extended periods. His short arms can also be a weakness as Tackles with longer reach have been known to get a good punch to the face, to try to keep him off of them and out of thier body. (Andrew Whitworth was very effective at this, of course it looked to me like there should have been illegal hands to the face called on every play) Another possible weakness my be his hussle factor. Since he always going 100% on every play, sometimes he wastes a lot of energy trying to make a play he has no chance to get to. He may ware out over the course of a game. I think there will be a struggle to adjust for Pollack early on. I also think that once he gets comfortable, he'll terrorize offenses. Buck
From what I've read the Bengals are planning to move Pollack to strongside linebacker. Is that right? That would surprise me a bit. Given his athleticism and that he played defensive end before, wouldn't weakside linebacker be a more natural position for him?

Buck
I see. Thanks for the answer! I reasoned speed wasn't an issue, you folks mentioned his game speed. I'm sure he can take on a tight end, but I think his coverage skills might be a bit raw playing DE in college.I guess Marvin Lewis knows what he is doing, but I like to see the reason behind such moves. UofLnMU
Yeah, to risk sounding like someone drinking the KoolAid, a good gauge for measuring Pollack is just looking at him play football. Everyone looks good in a highlight reel, but I watched his highlight reel, and thought, "Why didn't they put in footage from *this* game...or *that* game?" The guy has a nose for the ball, and would tear out the opponents' lungs, and then help their mothers across the street. He is a beast, the likes of which we haven't seen in a while. That's why I'm on his nuts.

They doing something down there in Jawjuh Jumpy Jr. (Geathers) showed an unreal knack playing the ball last year for the Bengals. Some really amazingly SCARY plays. I thought the Yellow Jacket Hargrove would've been better, but I'm glad the Bengals picked Jumpy's nephew.
staticx682000
To be honest, i wasn't all that happy with the pollack signing, until marvin said he would be playing lb.Now i can't wait to see him play..Jason white he played in my opinion a very overrated conference...He has other issues stated above.
