cHaD711Johnson Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3702356Strong safety is the most open position on the team. Anthony Mitchell and Kim Herring are battling for the right to complement FS Madieu Williams in the starting lineup. Mitchell has the edge because he's more physical and durable than Herring. But don't forget about Reggie Myles. The ex-cornerback is a fearless, aggressive player who gained 10 pounds to push his weight to 195. He needed the added bulk to be able to tackle the big backs in the AFC North. . . .Keep an eye on CB Brandon Williams, who ran a 4.3 40-yard dash in recent tests. Williams, a waiver pickup from the Falcons who spent the final eight weeks of the 2004 season on the Bengals' practice squad, has improved dramatically this offseason. He's a willing tackler who is doing a better job of tracking the ball in the air. With his speed and quickness, Williams has a chance to become the club's fourth corner behind Tory James, Deltha O'Neal and Keiwan Ratliff.SCOUTING REPORT: TB Kenny Watson is a solid special teams player who has an excellent chance to unseat Chris Perry as Rudi Johnson's top backup. Watson has good size and power and has worked hard to improve his speed and ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. He runs with good body lean and has a natural feel for the passing game, but he needs to show better concentration and ball security. If he can conquer that part of his game and become more reliable, he'll get an opportunity to contribute on third-down passing situations.OFFENSIVE ADJUSTMENTS: The unit is built around strong-armed QB Carson Palmer, and coordinator Bob Bratkowski is determined to open things up and allow his gunslinger to use all the weapons surrounding him. The club wants to build leads with a quick-strike passing game and then milk the clock in the fourth quarter by having bruising TB Rudi Johnson move the chains. The attack mode will include an empty backfield, three wideouts and two tight ends for a seven-man protection scheme that will give Palmer the time to find Chad Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and either Peter Warrick or Kelley Washington.INSIDE DISH: The Bengals, Eagles and Dolphins are showing the most interest in former USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright. The 6-6, 310-pound player recently visited Cincinnati in preparation for the July 14 supplemental draft. Wright dominated at times in a backup role behind Shaun Cody. He opted for the late draft when he learned he wouldn't be academically eligible for the 2005 college season. Wright shows good balance and lateral quickness for a player of his size. The Bengals could use him because Matthias Askew, a fourth-round pick in 2004, has been plagued by knee and ankle injuries.WIDE RECEIVERS ANALYSIS: Grade: A. Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are a formidable 1-2 punch for a unit that added depth in the draft. Peter Warrick is due to be healthy by training camp. Quote
TJJackson Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 err, I kinda lost all interest in the article when i read"Kenny Watson is a solid special teams player who has an excellent chance to unseat Chris Perry as Rudi Johnson's top backup."The writer clearly doesnt know that Watson is the backup until at the very least Perry is able to hobble onto the field and take snaps. Perry will have 1) get healthy, and then 2) try to unseat Watson. Opposite of what is stated.I'd guess that Perry is at the moment theoretically 4th or 5th on the depth chart behind healthy players.Sheesh. Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Actually, the depth chart probably still has Perry at #2 but injured. If Perry is healthy, he moves immediately ahead of Watson at this point. Quote
HairOnFire Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Perhaps the writer was overly fond of both plays last season where Perry actually served as Rudi's backup by running with the football. Quote
TJJackson Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 2 carries, 1 yard.sweetyou want that in a backup Quote
HoosierCat Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 The fox reports are written by Chick Ludwig from the Dayton Daily News. Of all the local Bengals reporters, he's probably the best, IMHO. If he says they have Perry penciled in as the No. 2 back, I believe him. Quote
derekshank Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I personally don't think Watson has a snowball's chance in Hell of beating a healthy Chris Perry for the #2 position on the depth chart... but it is nice to know that our backups are improving... especially since Perry has yet to run full speed since his injury. Perhaps if Perry isn't 100% toward the beginning of the season Watson can fill in nicely as a #2 for a while (hopefully not the whole season though). Quote
HairOnFire Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 Sure, why not believe him? He's passing along 2nd hand speculation about a backup roster spot that's hopefully going to be filled in the future by a player whose future the coaches are confident enough in to write in pencil. The real question is what grade of pencil are we talking about? What type of graphite is the pencil constructed with, and how dark is the line it draws? Plus, you've got to ask yourself if an eraser might be available at some point? Chris Perry: On paper he's somebody's backup. On the field, he's the guy in street clothes. (Try not to stare.) Quote
CBin2k7 Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 The more and more I hear about this Brandon Williams the more excited I get. If he steps his game up enough to be the 4th corner, who knows. I have read for a couple of years how the Bengals have the best coached secondary in the league and Kevin Coyle is one of the most underrated coaches around. I know it's early and the jury is still out but it's exciting to hear the Bengals finally finding some CB's. Quote
jditty47 Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 i like watson and if perry cant perform somehow, i dont mind watson. Quote

Thats too much logic for these morons, it goes right over their head. What also goes over their head is the fact that Perrys rookie season was far more productive then their Idol mr 2 yards and a cloud of dust's was. And Perry actually has a legitimate excuse for having low production. Perry = got injured, Rudi = just wasnt good enough. Quote

cHaD711Johnson Posted June 21, 2005 Author Report Posted June 21, 2005 Yea 2K7 I agree, it sounds like we may have something with Brandon Williams Quote
brian5562 Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 I don't get the point of a Bengals fan bashing Rudi. He gets the job done. If Perry or anyone else can beat him out as the starter then great because that must mean they are a pretty special back. Quote

HairOnFire Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 19 carries 31 yards (against one of the worst teams in the league)sweetyou want that in a starter Maybe you want a better O-line, but you probably don't want to rely a constantly broken backup for a starter that can't produce more than that. Sheesh, I say just cut Perry now. The team should just admit the mistake and take it's collective lumps in the media. It won't be pretty, but we all know things aren't going to get any better now that Rudi has shut Perry out of the starters job here and the plethora of players the Bengals SHOULD have drafted instead of Perry are just going to become ever bigger stars as his sad and pathetic tale of woe plays out in River City. Like it or not, now or later, Chris Perry is a bust looking for a place for his career to end. Besides, we've now got waiver wire pickups that are threatening Perry's job as the backup's backup. Cut him, and when you do it make sure everyone knows you did it because it was the most humane thing to do. Quote
Spain Posted June 21, 2005 Report Posted June 21, 2005 One thing Ill say for Marvin he doesnt like guys who dont make the dance, Perry IMHO is safe he is just not counted on. If he continues to be a nonfactor he will be gone and Askew tooIMHO Quote

Congrats.Perry was injured. Rudi was BEHIND YOUR FAVORITE f**king PLAYER OF ALL TIMEJust because he was behind a living legend isnt an excuse for not getting one carry all season. If he was good enough he would of shown it, and gotten at least some playing time his rookie year. It took desperation before he ever got a shot. Quote

I'm just going to assume that you were joking just because I don't see how you couldn't be. No, I wasn't serious. Yes, I was indeed joking. Some form of sarcasm may have been involved as well. That said, I wouldn't mind the idea of cutting Perry now as doing so would provide us all with a valuable new thread topic. I think it might be worth it, and it's not like he can play or anything. Then again, we could all promise to resist posting incredibly stupid things for a week or so....just until there's some worthy news....in the hope that even more Spaniards don't invade this board with idiotic questions. GROIIIDayton Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 Perry will be splitting time by the 8th game if he is healthy and a healthy Perry will give us another reciever on the field with the wide open offense. The offense really isn't built for Rudi, by the end of the season Perry will see alot of time in the begining of the game to try to help build a lead and then Rudi will come in later in the game after we've built a lead to run over the defense. Rudi will get more carrys but they will split time I'd guess 15-18 carries for Rudi, and 7-10 for Perry. Perry is going to be great one day though. Quote
The Big Orange Posted June 22, 2005 Report Posted June 22, 2005 An observation my wife and kid had about Chris Perry during minicamp open practice. He drank some water from the wheeled out water machines they have along the sidelines. Perry was doing some running drills along with Warrick and Landon Johnson (no jerseys on, just sports shirts). After taking a drink the hose that was attatched to the machine didn't click off like it should. He dropped the hose. Then he looked down at the hose just continuing to squirt water on the ground thus draining the machine. The guy turned around and started watching practice. He was just going to let it run all out. Landon saw what was happening so he non-chalauntly (how the hell do you spell that?) walked over and turned the hose off. He didn't say anything to Chris. He just turned it off. I don't know why Chris was okay just letting the water drain out, but it seemed to say something ugly about him. The same kind of feeling when he was holding out...kind of a pre-madonna type attitude. I'm not sure if that who he is, but he kinda strikes me as an immature/selfish kind of guy. Quote
