HoosierCat
...per Lenny's latest tip sheet, they will be the only 2 teams in the league to go into the season with the same o-line as last year.http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/stor..._len&id=2088145 All things considered...that's a pretty big surprise. I'm a firm believer in the "it all starts in the trenches" school of thought, and to see that much change...well, IMHO that means there could be a lot of surprises in 2005.Lenny may have also answered a question many bengals fans have asked: what did Marvin see in o-line coach Paul Alexander (who has a poor rep among a lot of fandom) that prompted him to offer the assistant coaching position to get him to stay? Lenny notes that o-line coaches with even modest success are getting big bucks these days, citing Hudson Houck's 800k deal in Miami. For the "mikey is still in charge" crowd, there's further evidence that the cheapskate doesn't want to fork over for better coaching. For the "Marvin's in control but has a budget to meet" thinkers, there's evidence that marvin thinks Alexander is at least good enough. Be interesting to know what he's pulling down...
BengalszoneBilly
It's really not a skill position, so hopefully it's not too much! Let's say I hope he can pay the mortgage and leave it at that.
UKstripes
Hey Billy, you're joking right? I'd rather have the best O-line in the league than the best RB. It may not be a "skill position" but that doesn't make it any less important. If PA isn't much of a coach then don't show him the money, but don't deny it on the mistaken principle that an O-Line coach can never contribute as much to a team's success as a skill position coach can. The_Next_Big_Thing
That comment also assumes Ritchie starts instead of Gooey.
LesterLyles
This could be the most underrated "positive" factor going for the Bengals. O-line continuity is SOOO important, IMO.

Be interesting to know what he's pulling down... I am not a great fan of Alexander's but he's got the title of assistant coach over Jim Anderson who has a far better track record as an assistant. Somebody in the building likes PA.

Then again, what do I know about coaching. Zip. Nada. Nothing. Zero. BTW, I'd rather have the best DEFENSIVE LINE in the league!
DesperateDerelict
Billy Boy - BTW, I'd rather have the best DEFENSIVE LINE in the league!I personally believe, having dealt with both gentlemen, that the weakest links on the coaching staff are ML's boyhood chums - the Hayes brothers. I've seen Jonathan at a presentation, and Jay was an assistant coach last year on my son's knothole team. Admittedly, I've had limited contact, but I was not impressed.
