When does this supplementary draft take place? I’m getting bored talking about a 4th round pick. I’d just like to know if we get him or not. We’ve talked enough about him that it seems like he’s a first or second rounder.

Isn't it odd how different things bore different people? Myself, I glaze over when there three different threads in play at the same time that each ask...who is your favorite Bengal? But I digress.

Three days.

Last, I think the discussion about Wright has been covered to the degree that it is precisely because of the Bengals confirmed interest in Wright, and the fact that this years supplemental draft is a one man show when viewed through a Bengal lens. In all seriousness, it's Wright, a couple of wideouts this team won't take the first sniff of, and a RB so small he might need help holding onto a full size football.

Three more days before we know.

dosen't always give 100% and is unmotivated and lacks desire

And despite it all he was penciled in as the next starting DT for the best college football team in the nation until concerns over poor grades prompted Wright to roll the dice on early entry into the NFL, dereailing the breakout season for Wright that was predicted by......(wait for it).....everyone.

IMHO, stay away from DTs (and DL in general) who have a rep for having no motor. High energy, high effort guys are the ones who make it in the NFL, not the Big Daddies of the world.

Not to change the subject, but Wilkinson has a solid 12-year NFL career going...

He may not have lived up to his lofty draft status...but then again, few lofty picks do...

As for Wright <shrug>. If he does as good as big duddy, he'd be a steal.

If I can invent a Mikey-to-Manny chat, it would go like this:

So you want to play here for Marvin. That's great. But I gotta tell you, it looks like the Dolphins will get you before us in the 3rd. If there's any way for you to do your workout out-of-shape and come off as a weakback on your reps, that might help get you here. We'll even throw in a case of the good stuff -- you know, the Tree Frog............Rrrrrrrrrrdup

I hope we risk a third round pick on this guy. He needs to gain upper body strength. He was a beast last year when he got to play. He only played in a rotation in which he was the last to come in so I don't understand how anyone is questioning his motor. I think he would be a first or second round pick next year if he would be playing at USC this year. So we use a third rounder and he gets to work with NFL strength coaches for one full year and then gets into the rotation in '06 I think this sounds great. I am sure he would get some playing time this year too if Askew is hurt. All up side no down side if you ask me. DT's are the most risky pick in the draft and if you can get first round potential in the third round that sounds like a good deal to me.

Im sure whatever Mike Brown decides will be whatever he feels is in the teams best interests. I expect Brown to put in a request for the 3rd round, and if we get him good. If not, not a big deal.

I finally figured you out! You've had your head up Corey Dildo's butt so long that you have missed Mike Brown handing the reins over to Marvin Lewis!

Sounds reasonable to me :D Provided of course ML and Brez think they can motivate this dude. Askew seems to be an enigma at this point, but he had the same billing as an early entry w/ potential 1st rd talent.

Thursday will tell.

Marvin Lewis is the coach. Mike Brown is the GM. The GM makes personel decisions. The coach might put requests in, but in the end its up to Brown. Hes making the calls here. If Lewis is making the calls, which hes not, hes voluntarily jipping himself out of another title and paycheck.

There's an outstanding update on Manny Wright at ESPN.com written by John Clayton. It features some real hard talk from his college defensive line coach who admits what a risk Wright represents as well as a quick comparison to Cortez Kennedy. It's worth the read.

EDIT: Agreed. Link. - JC

I would be all for using a #3 on Manny, but I'm not so sure about a #2. This isn't because I don't think Wright's good enough, but he's too much of a "project" to sacrifice what has been perhaps our most productive round in the last few years (Steinbach, Madieu, Ratliff, and Odell). That being said, this guy could be a beast. He was productive when he got the chance to play over the last couple of years. As for the whole backup thing, think of it like a Marvin Williams (UNC) type thing. He was a backup to experience, not talent, and he could actually end up being the best pro out of him, Cody, and Patterson. And the whole weight argument is a heedless issue, after a year of not playing (low SAT's, he's definitely not gonna be the one who finds a cure for cancer), he showed up missing his ankles (like he is now) and eventually slimmed down to a tone 290 or so, and I see no reason why he can't do that again. The bad bench press, for this I have no explanation. Anyways, let me just say that there's a reason he was the #1 ranked DT coming out of high school, and I hope he ends up a Bengal.

Thanks Hair, had not seen that one. Very much appreciated.

One of the many interesting quotes was this one:

"Wright has rare ability for a defensive tackle. It's his "Wow" factor. Wright has that incredible first step that a defensive tackle needs in the NFL. Whether he's 290 or 329 pounds, Wright can take that first step and blast past a blocker before he's set up. Few pro tackles have that gift. Wright has it."

Wonder how all of this has played with the Bengals. Now very curious again about how today plays out. A third today for a guy who might have been a first in 2007? Not too much to pay at all, seemingly. Appreciate the update.

There's also an update on Pro Football Weekly that is far more critical of Wright. It claims that Wright was never considered by scouts to be more than 4th round value, and might be drafted far lower than that due to his poor workout, small hands, and inabilty to drop his hips. It goes so far as to claim that as a project he's at least two years away and presently couldn't make the 53-man roster of an NFL team.
