bengal4life
I'm interested in seeing Myles at training camp this july with gaining 20 lbs and his hitting ability I could see him being the backup to KH or even stealing the starting position from KH.With Pollack losing 20 lbs he should be able to get around opponents O-line faster and getting to the point of attack quicker.I've heard that Geathers is faster even though he has gained 10 lbs but regardless if he is faster or a bit slower he will be a man child out there on the field.I think that with Ratliff losing 20 lbs it might hurt him just because last year he was known as a big hitter and this year he might lose some of that crippling hit. I do although think that with Ratliff losing those 20 lbs he will be a bit faster and will be able to cover better. What do you think? He wasn't unearthly quick last season and I'm afraid that the weight gain could hurt him. I agree on Ratliff though.
ShulaSteakhouse
Bah Geathers is a DE so he could use the size if he wants to become more of a complete player. If the weight is muscle he won't lose much if any speed in that situation, it should help him.I also don't think Myles will be beating out Herring for SS honestly, I don't think we even know yet if Marvin will allow him to line up there and compete for it or not yet. backerman
I think it is a mistake to have Pollack losing 20 lbs. Sure, he will probably be quicker, but I think one of the things that would really make him special as a OLB would have been the ability to blow up opposing offensive linemen. AT Georgia, he was always playing on the offenses side of the line of scrimmage. He would ALWAYS drive his blocker/blockers backwards into the backfield and get penetration even if he didn't make the tackle. Playing at 245lbs I don't think he will have the same effect. Of course one of the reasons I think he was able to do this was because he played so low to the ground with such great leverage, using his tremendous leg strength to drive opponents backwards. (He's got the UGA squat record). So if he was going to be playing as a stand up OLB on rushing downs, he may have lost this ability anyway. I still think its a mistake however, he was already quicker than most LBs at 265 but not very fast. I don't think he'll really get much quicker or faster by losing the weight.265 is his natural playing weight, I think he will be most effective at that weight. NOt 20lbs heavier or lighter. derekshank
Good points, but 265 is good for nothing. Too light to play the line in this league, and too heavy to play fast enough for linebacker. I think losing the 20lbs will make him faster. Everyone is talking about how much fast Carson is going to be for doing the exact same thing. He will still have that 700 pound squat leg strength... and I don't know that 265 is actually "natural" playing wieght. When he came in at Georgia he didn't weight even 245 lbs. in 2002 he gained up to 265, and was SEC player of the year. He gained all the way up to 295 in 2003, and wasn't nearly as effective, so worked his way back down to 265 last year.It seems like he needed the extra 20 lbs to play DE in college ball, but when he started gaining the weight you need to be in the NFL at that position, he became less effective. My guess is the lighter he gets, the better he gets. If he gets back down to 245, and isn't forced to push back O-linemen all the time, he will be a force as a LB in my opinion. bengal4life
I agree with you DerekshankIf he is on the same side as Geathers, speed is what he needs not weight. With both of those guys being of above average speed for their positions it will be hard to stop them from getting to the quaterback on that side of the ball. They will be able to penetrate and get to the point of attack with avengeance. :player:

Do you expect it to affect position changes? Will it affect injuries? The biggest surprise to me is Jeremi Johnson coming in at 15-20lbs lighter. Maybe the light bulb finally went on for this kid. I thought he had a great rookie season and was looking forward to bigger things last year then he comes in out of shape and gets a groin injury. His situation coupled with the OL injuries really hurt our offense and running game last year. It appears that the running game could start off with a bang this year versus sputtering out of the gate like last year - Carson has to be excited about this.I agree that Ratliff losing too much might be a problem if he was playing safety but I think he is shooting for one of the corner spots.Pollack had to lose weight to play OLB, there is no way he plays there at 265. He isnt playing with one hand on the ground the entire time. I agree with a previous poster, I still think the strength will be there with increased speed. The guy had a shuttle time that many corner backs would be in awe of..... The guy I am most excited to see is Mr Geathers - he started coming into his own at the end last year. Another year of seasoning with increased speed and strength and technique - look out. Does Clemons turn into a situational pass rusher?? kingwilly
Geathers will only get better, no matter how his weight goes.JJ coming to camp with a professional approach will only help the Bengals rushing and on plays where he is the outlet receiver.I think if Landon can go up in weight/strength, he and Odell can do some damage in the middle against the run, key to winning the AFC North.Ratliff looked soft last year, doughy, but still played well. His weight drop may notch up his speed, good for returning punts!Myles adding some muscle to hit at safety could also turn out well.
walshfan
Most of these guys have come into camp at a weight prescribed to them by trainers... regardless of what we think we dont know their physical makeup like trainers that have worked with them do.. Ratliff will be faster at 180... He needs that extra quickness to play cornrer.... Geathers is looking extrememly quick in practices. The player Im most impressed with is Jerimi Johnson.. He's committed now and thats a good thing for Rudi...
