"(April 25, 2005) ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Detroit Lions announced today that they have released WR Az-Zahir Hakim and S Brock Marion. The team also announced that they have signed free agent DT Brandon Kennedy to a one-year deal. No additional contract terms were disclosed.

...

Marion (5-11, 200) joined the Lions prior to last season, signing with the team March 25, 2004. He finished second on the squad with 112 total tackles and three interceptions while starting all 16 games for Detroit in 2004. Before joining the Lions, Marion spent six seasons (1998-03) with the Miami Dolphins and was named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad three times (2000, 2002-03). Marion was originally selected in the seventh-round (196th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, where he was a part of two Super Bowl Championship teams. He has 1,133 career tackles (774 solo) and has played in 182 games (154 starts) in 12 NFL seasons."

Well, he would be a bona fide upgrade at S, wouldn't he? Or is he too old? It sure seems like he was productive last year...

Sounds an awful lot like Kim Herring...I'm not buying.

Let's get with a guy like Brandon Browner.

I just don't see a rookie undrafted FA stepping into the starting SS spot for this club, but maybe I am missing something. If ML thought enough of a guy to actually start him at such a crucial position, wouldn't they have drafted him?

"Marion signed with the Lions last year and started all 16 games, making 88 tackles and three interceptions. Marion has made 31 interceptions during his 12-year career, previously playing in Miami and Dallas."

12 year vet would be too old if you were looking to get him for more than 2 years...but you look at his production and his durability to this point and you can get a guy who can play for another year or so and be a coach on the field foe some of the younger guys. Maybe a year or 2 from now there would be a SS worth taking and signing long term...right now there isn't.

Just a question...I wondered whether or not the Bengals should go after Ty Law this offseason. Think he could make the switch to SS?? Would he be willing???

Marion looks like he can still play and the vet minimum would only count about $450k from cap relief. But there's a truer SS out there still, Eric Brown, who was cut by the Texans. He's a vet but not as ancient as Marion. A sprained MCL cost him his job last year but he worked back into the lineup on special teams.

Still, ML staked a lot to get Herring in and Herring will give what he's got. He might get bowled over by a TE from time to time but still tackles well and should have a solid season as long as the rod in his forearm (IIRC) and the rest of his parts hold up.
