Top Players left for Day 2

Recommended Posts

Ok, we didn't trade back into the third, but there is an ample amount of quality players at a lot of positions. So Here's how I'll grade them.

Starting at positions of need.

Defensive Tackle.

1. Antajj Hawthorne - he was taught a very clear lesson by the NFL, don't do drugs, drugs are bad um kay..?

2. C.J. Mosley - very quick interior lineman. Was thought to be a first rounder in '06, but came out early, he's still a work in progress similar to Askew.

3. Toss up between Darrell Shropshire,Tim Bulman and Ron Fields.

Strong Safety

1. James Butler - more of a free safety, but is a good tackler.

2. Earnest Shazor - lack of speed hurt him the most in the draft. But he's a solid player.

3. Donte Nicholson - has limited man to man cover skills, so he's a liability against the pass. He can get better though.

4. Toss up between Gerald Sensabaugh, Sean Considine, and Brandon Browner - although Browner was a cornerback.

Centers

1. Jason Brown - good athlete, strong, can sit a year and take over in '06.

2. Ben Wilkerson - same as Brown, but may need a year to get fully healthy.

3. Scott Mucrowszki - limited athletically, but he's a fighter and very smart. Doubtful we reach for him in round 4.

Cornerbacks

1. Antonio Perkins - average skills, but is an excellent return man.

2. Derrick Johnson - good size and speed, a little stiff but is very underrated.

3. Lamont Reid - he was one of the better cornerbacks 2 years ago, but his game has fallen off, he has starters potential.

Defensive Ends

1. Chris Canty - good size, average quickness ,but 6'7 is hard not to look at.

2. Jovan Haye - early entry candidate, but was better in his sophomore season. Good size, and quickness and he's a natural pass rusher.

3. Bill Swancutt - overachiever, who could win a roster spot.

Runningbacks - Yeah I said Runningbacks.

1. Marion Barber III - I think he's one of the better runningbacks in the draft. Tough, instinctive, good vision and patience, he'll be a starter in this league.

2. Ciatrick Faison - He actually reminds me of Corey Dillon only with better hands. Not a burner, more of the type of athlete that builds speed as he goes on.

Brandon Jacobs is huge with good speed and could be a fullback or H-back.There are many good fullbacks this year, but Kyle Eckel ( Navy ) is my favorite. Hard to draft a guy that has a Naval commitment.

Tight Ends

1. Garrett Cross

2. Adam Bergen

3. Cody McCarty

4. Joel Dreessen

5. Victor Sesay

Quarterbacks

1. Dan Orlovsky

2. Ryan Fitzpatrick

3. Derek Anderson - these guys will be gone by the 5th round.

Marvin said we wouldn't be taking any QBs in this draft, and I hope he sticks to that....

I posted this on another thread, but applies here.

Shazor, Browner, and Hawthorne are just too slow. Marvin values speed.

C Brown is strong but lacks smarts, need smart player at C position.

In no particular order, except for Wilkerson as top need

1) C Ben Wilkerson - should have gone in the third. First round talent, health status is ONLY minus, at position of great need

2) S James Butler - top available safety w/ sub 4.5 speed

3) S Gerald Sensabaugh - second best available safety w/ sub 4.5 speed

4) OG Elton Brown - a earlier second rounder on most boards

5) S Donte Nicholson - great talent, but more of a pure SS, not as well suited to the interchangeable safety system here.

6) LB Robert McCune - second round talent, great speed

7) LB Adam Seward - also second round talent, slightly less speed than McCune but immensely strong

8) DE Jovan Haye - read about him at http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/playerpro.../jovanhaye.html and tell me he's not a Marvin guy :-)

I too really like Brandon Jacobs, but think he'll be there in 5, and C is just a bigger need.

I would add Rob Hunt (North Dakota Stae) to the Centers. (6'3", 301, 4.93)

Has an intriguing combination of size, strength, speed and athletic ability. Is tall with decent bulk. Has the frame to continue to get bigger. Is stronger in the upper body than the lower body. Has impressive weight-room strength and shows good initial pop in his punch. He has good initial quickness, lateral movement and top-end speed. Shows the ability to reach the second level and hit the moving target in space. Is a flexible O-lineman with tremendous durability. Experienced (42 consecutive starts) and dominated the DI-AA level of competition

And definately add Eric Ghuacuic from Central Michigan. He was in the top five in practically every speed/agility category among all O lineman at the combine.

The funny thing is that the knock on him was for strength, but he did 43 reps, which was something like second highest (after Scott Young of BYU).

This write-up was done before the combine:

6'4", 302 lbs.

Strengths: Has good size and the frame to add some weight...Has long arms...Athletic, mobile and moves well...Very smart and has what it takes mentally to make it...Still improving and has a lot of potential.

Weaknesses: Needs to hit the weight room and get bigger and stronger...Is inconsistent and needs to work on his technique...Plays too tall...Is not very powerful and won't jolt defenders.

Notes: Raw prospect who needs to be developed physically but has some tools...Prospect with a lot of upside who could end up being a steal for someone if he can put some more meat on his bones.

Another one of the Raw guys that Marvin likes (as per Henry news conference). Could develop for a year under Braham.

hmm

between Wilkerson and those two, one should be available in Round 5.

So then that leads me to ask: who do we want in Round 4 that we won't be able to get in 5? Butler, then? Seward? Sensabaugh? Adam Bergen? Brandon Jacobs? Elton Brown? Check out the profile for Elton Brown, rated in late 1 early 2, and definitely a Marvin guy, did not abandon the combine as was widely reported http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/playerpro...eltonbrown.html

I don't much like any of the DTs or DEs at this point

I agree, but I disagree. Castillo's steroid use was for a health issue. He took andro, not THG, or some other seriously banned steroid, he took the stuff you can get at GNC.

However Antajj tested positive for weed. Let's think about that for a second. He knows he's going to the combine. He knows he's got first round talent. He knows he's going to get tested, because it's going to be part of the NFL 's random drug testing positive. But he still smokes the stuff, ..

So on one hand we have a guy that basically tried to cheat to improve himself, admitted to it, explained it, and is willing to forfeit his signing bonus to show that type of mistake won't happen again.

ON the other hand, we have a guy that doesn't have the maturity to understand the reality of the enviroment he's about to go through. Let alone the opportunity that is right in front of him.

I can't make wrong right, but I can over stand why Castillo went on day one and why Hawthorne is sitting there in the 4th round.

On talent alone, 5.25 speed isn't slow, Hawthorne has good skills to play in the NFL ,and considering our defensive line, I wouldn't mind adding him as another piece to the puzzle.

I'm very happy (as you can see from my 1:30 AM post). this guy was a really impressive athlete. I think we know we'll get a SS and DT later.
