I'm going to post this on my blog, but I thought I'd share it here too. Bengals fans really have to take a moment and reflect on how far this franchise has come in the last 24 months. Gone are the days of snarky comments by ESPN announcers. Gone are the days of taking an out of shape chainsmoker in the third round (see Sean Brewer). Today is one of my proudest days as a Bengals fan.

Here is a first round review from ESPN.com:

17. Cincinnati Bengals: David Pollack | DE | Georgia

Scouts' take: The days of Cincinnati fans scratching their heads with each pick the Bengals make appear to have come to an end, as this is another in a string of excellent picks since Marvin Lewis took over as head coach. In our opinion, Pollack is the best available end in this year's draft and he has the potential to develop into a star. He has exceptional instincts, he's relentless in pursuit and he always seems to be around the ball. Cincinnati also has to be impressed with Pollack's ability to deliver the big play. He does an excellent job of anticipating snap counts, has the burst to shoot the inside gap and shows great burst to the ball.

Mel Kiper's take: Pollack has more intensity than maybe any player in this draft. His motor never stops, and that made him incredibly productive in the SEC, really setting the tone for that Georgia defense. He has good athletic ability and can make plays all over the field, but there is some concern that his short arms will allow offensive tackles to get to his body and knock him around at the point of attack.

It does feel alot better, doesn't it? If this trend continues, that "pride" you feel today will pale in comparison to what we all hopefully feel in the not too distant future!

Didn't you hear what that very intelligent man (Mort, I believe was his name.) said earlier? "The Bengals could "end New England's reign in the AFC." I'll not argue with this obvious Mensa member! :D

David Pollack was a great pick, I think he was the most complete football player combining production, with attitude.

He was my number one overall player, and I'm extremely glad we got him. 3.90 in the short shuttle was by far the best overall of any defensive lineman, let alone the fact, that would be a great time for a defensive back.

Pollack has the ability to add weight, he has played up to 290 lbs. before, But I think his best spot will be Justin Smiths' spot allowing a much stronger Justin Smith to move to Duane Clemons left side end.

If he stays at linebacker he'll play strong side most likely and put a hand down on passing downs. He will make plays that's for sure.

Congratulations Bengals. :player:

I absolutely love this pick!

Part of Pollack's bio from Georgia Bulldogs website:

DAVID M. POLLACK...Born June 19, 1982...

For a college player who had never played defensive end until his sophomore season, David Pollack re-wrote the definition of the position during his Georgia career.

After electing to return to UGA for his senior season in 2004, he joined legendary tailback Herschel Walker (1980-82) as the only two Georgia players to be chosen first team All-America three times (2002-03-04). Along the way he shattered the school record for quarterback sacks with 36 breaking the old mark of 29 by Richard Tardits which had stood for 16 years.

From 2001-04, Pollack became one of the school's most decorated players in history. In addition to his three-time All-America selection, he won some of the most prestigious awards in college football including the 2004 Rotary Lombardi Award (nation's outstanding lineman), 2004 Chuck Bednarik Award (nation's outstanding defensive player), 2004 Ronnie Lott Trophy (defensive IMPACT Player of the Year), and the 2003 and 2004 Ted Hendricks Award (nation's outstanding defensive end). He was also a finalist for the 2002 and 2004 Bronko Nagurski Award.

Pollack was named the SEC's Defensive Player of the Year in both 2002 and 2004 by the Associated Press and the SEC Coaches. He was the Associated Press Player of the Year in '02. Pollack was a consensus All-SEC performer three consecutive years (2002-03-04) and was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week six times during his career. His 14 sacks in 2002 set a Georgia single season record. During his career he also started 45 consecutive games and was named the MVP of the 2005 Outback Bowl after recording three QB sacks, three tackles-for-loss, one forced fumble, one recovered fumble, and one deflected pass. He was named to the Sports Illustrated and ESPN.com "All-Bowl Team."

But despite the individual honors, Polllack was about "Team." He was part of senior class that led Georgia to a four-year record of 42-10 which ranks sixth best in the country, top six final rankings in 2002 (3rd), 2003 (6th) and 2004 (6th), two SEC Eastern Division championships in 2002 and 2003 and the SEC title in '02. Pollack's teams also played in four bowl games.
