bengalboomer7
Here's a defense tidbit for ya! Hobson just reported that the Bengals got Robinson. Hope someone(especially you Joisey) is at least a little Happy about this cause our rotation just got a little better on the run!
jjakq27
from bengals.comAgent: Robinson in fold 3-12-05, 2:45 p.m.BY GEOFF HOBSON The agent for Dolphins defensive lineman Brian Robinson said Saturday his client has reached a free agent deal with the Bengals. Robinson, who played in 13 games for Miami last season, figures to be the starting tackle next to John Thornton. Agent Mark Bartelstein confirmed that he spoke with the Bengals Saturday morning and afternoon to lock up the club's first free agent signing of the offseason. The Bengals won't comment until the deal is officially signed, but it's believed to be a three-year contract. Other teams involved were the Broncos and Cowboys. HoosierCat
Excellent news! This essentially swaps Tony "can't stop the run, can't rush the QB" Williams for a guy who can at least stop the run. Also gives us the freedom to lower DT's priority in the draft from "round 1" to "day 1." Thumbs up for Mikey!

jditty47
awesome news!!! finally a DT!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT??? we've needed it for about 3-4 years and it has never really been addressed fullheartedly...finally we might have an impact player in the middle. f**k ya. skyline
I'm happy to see this as well. Good move.Don't get too excited, though. This guy is hardly a dominant force. Just an improvement over what we currently have. I'm hopeful that Askew will be able to take over the starting role by the end of the year, or the start of next season... HoosierCat
Don't get too excited, though. This guy is hardly a dominant force. Just an improvement over what we currently have. Bingo. Robinson racked up some decent numbers in his days with the Bears, but he was playing DE at the time. He seems to have a decent rep as a run-stuffer at DT but not much else, and I haven't seen any Fins fans lamenting his loss. But if he can hold at the point of attack better than Tony Williams -- which shouldn't be asking a lot -- he's an upgrade. Ditto on Askew, he needs to step up this year. Whur CHad At?
Do you think this means that the Bengals might be looking at Linebacker now in the draft because of this signing.

Also gives us the freedom to lower DT's priority in the draft from "round 1" to "day 1." Thumbs up for Mikey! It's the best news (in defensive terms) for the Bengals so far during this off season! And yes, it certainly does take some of the heat off finding defensive line help on Draft Day, although still picking up USC's Shaun Cody with the #1 pick wouldn't break my heart.Robinson is solid, and played tough versus the Bengals on Sunday night last season. I don't remember the exact game stats, but I don't think Cincinnati gained too much yardage on the ground against them. ***edit: I just checked the database here for that game, and the Bengals were held to a total of 94 rushing yards, while Robinson had 2 tackles in that effort.I will give Mikie some credit for his part in this signing, but I believe Marvin truly was the driving force to see the opportunity, and then make it happen! :player: Edited March 12, 2005 by billybroome
JPW
This is a very good pick up for a number of reasons:1) Robinson was one of the better Run-Stuffing DTs in FA this year, and it was help against the Run that we were looking for.2) Using a high pick on a DT is always one of the biggest Gambles in the draft.3) Even if we had drafted a DT, who could step right in and start, it would have meant that Thornton would have been the only DT in our Rotation with very much NFL experience at all. This is indeed good news ...It is one less "hole" that will need to be filled in this years draft. ArmyBengal
Can he stop the run better than what we've had in the past few years ??YES !!! This is a good pick up for no other reason than that.WHODEY !!!
CTBengalsFan
I believe he shed 20 lbs to play for the Fins so maybe he'll be up to ~320 when he plays next year.

Nothing personal directed at you...I just hate seeing people blame Mike Brown for every bad thing, and then turn around and praise Marvin for all that is good. HoosierCat
And yes, it certainly does take some of the heat off finding defensive line help on Draft Day, although still picking up USC's Shaun Cody with the #1 pick wouldn't break my heart. If they still chose to go d-line with No. 17 I would not complain either. But for anyone hoping it's Davis or Crowder or even Heath Miller, Robinson's signing is good news. Also gives them more freedom to trade down. One thing I have seen happening on the draft boards is that both Travis Johnson and Antajj Hawthorne have been falling into the second. If there were to get someone like Davis in the 1st and grab Hawthorne or Johnson in the second I'd be ecstatic...esp. if they fill in another LB via FA... I've seen his weight listed differently in different places. espn has him at 296, yahoo at 306...but yeah he's definitely going to be one of the bigger fellows on the line, I think. Whur CHad At?
Yea he will be, but we need bigger. He will not be 320. Maybe 300 at most, but he will stay 296. He looks like he is 340, but that is all fat i guess

HoosierCat
Hobson updated his story on the signing, pegs the contract at 3 years, $6 million. That's very reasonable.Edit: kffl, citing Curnette, says it includes a $1.7 million signing bonus. HoosierCat
And who would they drop from the DT rotation ?It is Highly Unlikely that the team will carry more than four DTs ...Just who would you have them cut ? Well, at this point we are down both Tony Williams and Carl Powell vs. last year. My bet is that between the DE and DT positions there will be about 9 guys. Right now, including Robinson, we're at 10 DEs and DTs combined, including some guys like DE Crawford (NLFE right now I think) and DTs Smith and Martin. So someone's neck is probably already on the chopping block. Were they to pick up another defensive lineman in the draft, that would mean cutting (or if possible, practice-squadding) 2 current guys. That's hardly outside the realm of possibility.
