JPW
mb9.scout.com5 year deal reported on WNST"On the first day of free agency, the Ravens filled one of their longest-standing needs. The Ravens and two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Derrick Mason agreed in principle to a multi-year deal Wednesday, giving Baltimore the big-play wideout it has lacked for years.Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome announced the deal at a Wednesday afternoon press conference. Although Mason has eight years of NFL experience under his belt, he is a relatively young 31 years old.Mason was primarily a kick returner for the first three years of his career, but since joining the Titans’ starting lineup in 2000, his production increased in each of the last five seasons. He caught 63 passes in 2000, 73 in 2001, 79 in 2002, 95 in 2003 and 96 last year. More importantly, Mason has averaged 13.5 yards per catch throughout his career and has 37 touchdown receptions.Furthermore, the Ravens believe Mason’s presence in the locker room is important as his production on the field. The team has a group of talented but relatively inexperienced receivers, and Baltimore thinks Mason can help them develop. "
TippCityRick
No big deal. We've got two number 2's right now and are choosing between them. Mason isn't a 1 which leaves Baltimore still needy at WR.
jjakq27
I am guessing that this situation might have helped TJ's cause.

Chucktkd
And they lost their starting center on a line that desperately needed upgrading and depth. Kyle Boller is not known for his brilliance or accuracy. Mason will not make that much of a difference without a lot of other help.

TippCityRick
What mason are you talking about? Hes been a #1 for years.Mason isn't a 1?No, Mason is not a 1. He's a 2 masquerading as a 1 cuz the Titans didn't have one. One of the reasons McNair was always getting hurt was that he didn't have a number 1 who could "always be open!" Mason is a slot receiver like Warrick.

Mason is a slot receiver like Warrick. That explains his two straight pro bowl appearances. A lot of #2 receivers make it to the pro bowl...happens all the time.Physically, yes...he's built to be a #2. But the fact remains that he was the best receiver for the Titans and will once again be the best receiver for the Ravens. In fact, he would be the best receiver on quite a few teams around the NFL, hence his pro bowl appearances. That equals #1 money the last time I checked. BengalszoneBilly
Kyle Boller will be huge this year with a legit #1 WR. Pushy...you really need to define your terms like "Huge" and "Awesome", etc. You used the term "huge" to describe the performance of Dillon in the Super Bowl. I seriously doubt Boller's "huge" will compare to Dillons "huge" in a head-to-head hugeness contest! IMHO, Boller may improve somewhat in performance and stats with a better recieving corps, but I seriously, he's no Carson Palmer! Now we're talking some serious hugeness here! Well, we will surely see how this pans out. I think the Mason pick up was great for the Ravens, but without another WR on the other side of the field, can you say double team ?? The ravens have to address the WR position in the draft and then you might be able to say they will improve on the O side of things. Until there is another viable option, I don't see Boller (Oh yeah HE STILL SUCKS) improving. Mason is a #1 WR, no question and I feel ya BengalNation... I HATE THE RAVENS !!!WHODEY !!! jjakq27
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3422006Redskins get jump, Ravens get biggest prize Dave Goldberg / Associated Press The Washington Redskins did it again, jumping Wednesday to sign the first free agent of the season. But the Baltimore Ravens landed the biggest prize of the first day of free agency, signing wide receiver Derrick Mason, whose 96 catches for Tennessee last season led all NFL wide receivers. And the Cleveland Browns traded defensive tackle Gerard Warren, the third overall pick in the 2001 draft, to Denver. It was an overall net loss for Cleveland - the Browns will get just a fourth-round draft choice for the underachieving Warren. The 31-year-old Mason, one of six Titans cut last month in a salary cap purge, will join a team whose leading receiver had just 35 catches a year ago. "We were high on his list, and he was high on our list," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "He was really the only receiver we have had any active discussions with thus far. What this does is, we bring in a veteran receiver who has the type of attitude and type of personality that we look for in a football player." St. Louis, meanwhile, signed 32-year-old linebacker Dexter Coakley, one day after he was released by Dallas. Washington's catch was a former Raven, center Casey Rabach, who joined a team has spent millions in the early days of free agency the last two seasons. But more significant for the Redskins, who went wildly after high-priced free agents on the first day the last two years, was keeping one of their own - left tackle Chris Samuels, whose contract was redone to provide more salary cap room. Those were the major free agents to sign on Day 1 of free agency Oakland also made an expected splash by officially completing the deal for Randy Moss, a trade made last week with Minnesota. The Raiders gave up linebacker Napoleon Harris and two draft picks, one of them the seventh overall in April's lottery. Moss may not be the only significant addition to the Raiders' offense. They appeared close to signing running back Lamont Jordan, who spent four years as Curtis Martin's backup with the New York Jets. He averaged 4.9 yards per carry in part-time duty but has never been a full-time back. Jordan should help, but Moss teamed with the re-signed Jerry Porter is the seemingly perfect combination for the strong arm of quarterback Kerry Collins. The big question is whether the offensive line can protect the immobile and turnover-prone QB. Collins was delighted. "If he's not the best, he's certainly one of the best," he said of Moss. "You can make a strong argument. Everybody has their own opinions. But ask any quarterback around the league which receiver they'd want, and I think most would say Randy Moss." As for Rabach, who played at Wisconsin, he will probably replace another former Badger with the initials "CR," - Cory Raymer in the middle of the line. With Jon Jansen back from injury at right tackle and Samuels on the left side, the Washington offense should be stronger than last year's unit, which scored just 240 points, second fewest in the NFL. In other developments: - Philadelphia re-signed running back Correll Buckhalter, who missed all of last season with a knee injury. - Guard Joe Andruzzi, a starter on all three of New England's Super Bowl winners, was in Cleveland talking to the Browns, coached by former Patriots' defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel. TippCityRick
That explains his two straight pro bowl appearances. That equals #1 money the last time I checked.IMHO I believe Mason to be a slot receiver that happened to be the only option available to a good quarterback in McNair. Yes he has had two straight Pro Bowl appearances and this bodes well for him. But again, IMHO I think the Ravens have overpaid for him. This situation sounds very similar to Lavernios (sp?) Coles going to Washington. He was (and still may be) a number 1 who went to a team with no qb (yes, I have little respect for Boler's abilities). Now Coles wants out cuz their ain't no way he's getting the ball in a run oriented offense with no stud qb. I agree wholeheartedly with ArmyBengalFan that Mason will see nothing but double teams and he will not be able to break free.(Now God grant it so that this post doesn't come back to bite me in my rear twice next year!!!)
