walzav29
I think this makes sense. I know we need a DT and DE, but if Heath is available then the Bengals should grab him. A complete tight end would make the offense complete, and if you can fill a defensive need in the 2nd round then why reach? That goes with the "best player available" philosophy. Chad and Warrick stretching the D, Perry on the swing pass, Rudi up the gut and Heath underneath. Sounds good to me.
Skilly McRailnob
I like Heath, but I believe there are some questions about his speed. If he answers those questions at the combine, I wouldn't have a problem with taking him in the 1st round.
BengalszoneBilly
I think this makes sense. Just not to me. I know we need a DTFar more than a TE IMHO! Am I the only one around here who is tired of watching the defense getting run over game, after game, after game, after game, after game.... walzav29
I hate it. I'm just saying that if you can get a great player at TE, and get a 2nd rd DT that is comparable Pollack? to a 1st rnder Spears? I say why not. You don't want to reach. skyline
I'd have no problem with it. We'd have to release at least 1 of our TEs...
BengalNation1281
I'm with Billy on this one...why get Miller when we can get Alex Smith or Kevin Everett in rounds 2 or 3? We need defense. We need guys who can stop the run or help the pass rush to aid in stopping the run. We don't need offense...I think that our offense will be fine whether we draft a TE or not. BengalszoneBilly
I think that our offense will be fine whether we draft a TE or not. That's exactly how I feel. I want a defense that will be able to get the ball for that offense! :player:

DEFINITELY wouldn't have a problem with that.Just remember Coach Lewis' draft philosophy. (Looking directly at Billy Broome)
ShulaSteakhouse
What the Bengals really need are a difference maker/impact player or two on defense...not so much just "solid" guys (not saying you should pass up on those guys either considering the age at some of the positions on defense here). The Bengals' offense doesn't seem to use the TE all that often, and if Matt Schobel wasn't hurt all the time I think he would suffice.Teams are starting to find these converts from basketball programs - basically big, great athletes who can run - in lower rounds and maybe taking a TE in the 1st might be a stretch in and of itself. It's up to the scouts to identify someone in the mid rounds who could be outstanding possibly.I don't think you rule out ANY position on defense - no one mentions the LB position but if I'm Lewis and an impact type of LB is available in the 1st I go there - or if a CB or Safety falls to you that's an outstanding prospect you go there. They just don't have to be a DE or DT. We saw what kind of difference Landon Johnson made and he was what, a 3rd rounder last year? The LB's on the Bengals' are one of the big reasons they can't stop any running backs as well - they are the ones who have to actually get to the POA and make the play/tackle. The LB's here, ecspecially Hardy and to an extent Simmons - just aren't getting the job done at the LOS.
BengalszoneBilly
Just remember Coach Lewis' draft philosophy. (Looking directly at Billy Broome) Yeah, yeah. I remember. It's the only thing I don't agree with Marvin on. If he's going to use it, I just hope he makes me look really bad by doing so.

I think some people take him way too seriously on that phrase. I think it's more of a general guideline than a hard rule.
BengalszoneBilly
I think it's more of a general guideline than a hard rule. Agreed. I think the drafting of Carson Palmer is proof of that.
HairOnFire
The Bengals' offense doesn't seem to use the TE all that often, and if Matt Schobel wasn't hurt all the time I think he would suffice. Yup. I have exactly no problem with the idea of drafting Heath Miller other than a nagging suspicion that he could be everything his supporters suggest but still see the ball only 3-4 times a game. And that's not enough bang for the buck if the Bengals draft board still includes several defensive prospects who grade out as impact players. I'm all for surrounding Palmer with as many weapons as he can count, and the idea of Heath Miller working in the redzone is outstanding, but when it comes down to it...I think I'm in more of a hurry to see the type of defensive play we all thought possible when Marvin Lewis was hired. walzav29
I want the greatest defense possible. I'm just suggesting that if you can get a a tight end with a 8 rating in the 1st rd, compared to getting a DT with a 5 rating is available in both the 1st and 2nd round. Then you might as well get the hotshot. I don't remember anyone rejoicing the selection of Madieu or Ratliff. Those look like great moves now. Bobcat Bengal
Its not that I'm opposed to drafting a DT, if we get Travis Johnson, fine. That must mean that our staff thinks he was the BPA, and he also happens to fill a need. Great. Its not that I'm in love with Heath Miller, I'd just like to see us have a top tier TE like our rivals, the Ravens and Browns. But then again, we have a better all-around Offense than either one of them, so.....I'm no draft expert by ANY means, but from what I hear, I'd like to go with either, Travis Johnson, Channing Crowder, Guru approved Marcus Spears, Heath Miller, or Antrel Rolle. (I've been hearing about his stock falling, I don't know about that though. I can't help but think if he's there, Coach Lewis would eat a bit of crow on draft day. Not that he would mind I'm sure.)I dunno about Pollack. I read that post I think HaironFire made about him, and he seems like a first class spazzola. But hey, that might be what we need on defense though.
ArmyBengal
If we neglect the D again, I'll be pissed. What good does a top O do for you when your D sucks ?? Oh yeah, you get the Colts. Great offense, NO DEFENSE. You saw how well that worked for them. Not going to say it a DT or DE, but somehow we must find a way to stop the run, because as of right now, WE CAN'T. Stop the run, make reservations for Detroit. WHODEY !!!

What did I just say?Hold on.....I don't think they will neglect the Defense. Not at all.I agree, in our conference, its smashmouth, and if we face the Steelers and Ravens twice a year, WE'D BETTER HAVE AN ANSWER.Just don't get all pissed if they don't select a D Lineman (or a Defensive player) in the first round. That's all I'm saying.Hell, they might go Offense and defense from there on.You never know about the Bengals War Room these days.Personally, I love our drafts. Everybody except Abdullah and Chris Perry seem to perform well. They're good at getting gems. We'll probably uncover some good players that could start or at least fill in rotation from this draft.I just hate waiting so long nowadays. 18th pick is AT least an hour, maybe an hour and a half. walshfan
I dont know why fans think that by drafting Heath Miller the Bengals will have solved their TE delimma... there's questions concerning his speed and how well he can block.. by all accounts he has very good hands.. that being said he has get open to make those catches.. Pro game is much faster than collage.. He may be a good one he may not ...he's certainly not the Winslow, Shockey or Heap type by all acccounts.. I think Matt Schobel will suffice for now.. I think Matt and Carson will hook up more now that Palmer has played with him for a year... The defense has to be upgraded in the draft..DT. SS and blitzing LB would all help to solidify our improving D...

But it does make me wonder if a coach might walk away from a fifteeen minute interview with Pollack shaking his head a little bit.

Oh, believe me, I was telling every football fan I knew about Ratliff from the end of college football season until draft day, and I was freakin' psyched when we drafted him ( I did my happy dance...ask my friends). I loved the Ratliff choice, and I still do...I didn't know too much about Madieu, but that changed fairly quickly. :player:
