Cool Note About Palmer

Saw this note out on Sportsline about Palmer.

Carson Palmer will have a monstrous statistical season. Palmer came into his own in his final four regular-season starts, as he threw for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. He has the support of RB Rudi Johnson in the backfield and leads a pass attack that includes WR Chad Johnson and should have Peter Warrick back in the mix.

With weaker defensive units such as Cleveland (2), Houston, Green Bay, Minnesota, Tennessee, Detroit and Kansas City on next season's schedule, Palmer should throw for 3,000-plus yards and 25-30 touchdowns.

I actually think those are pretty conservative numbers. He finished with 2,900 yards and 18 TD's this year and missed the final three games. With all those weak defenses he could put up HUGE numbers.

Or...just to play devil's advocate for a moment...he could have a "sophomore slump" like Drew Brees did.

Brees had a solid second-year-rookie season in 2002: 3,200 yards, 61% completion rate, 17 TDs, 16 picks. All numbers very, very similar to Carson's.

In '03 he crashed: 2,100 yards, 58% completion, 11 TDs, 15 picks in 11 games before being pulled.

Then, of course, he led the Chargers to the playoffs with a great season.

I certainly hope Carson has a monster season. But he could have a nightmare one, too.

Man it feels good to finally have a QB.....:)

This has been one of the harder things for me to take about the Lost decade ... or Age of Helplessism.

From Cook to Anderson and then to Boomer, Cincinnati was known for great quarterbacks and receivers for them to throw to. To watch them be followed by Klingler .... teased by Blake for one year .... and " yer killin me " Smith, was like watching a train wreck. It just kept piling up, it seemed like in slow motion ... and the damage kept getting worse. :(

Palmer is ( I believe ) the long term solution we've been looking for. If he does have a sophomore let down, then it's like Paul Newman said at the end of The Color Of Money ...... " it doesn't matter if I don't beat you next week. Or even the week after that .......... " Cause I"m Back " B)

I would be surprised if Palmer had a slump next year. With Chad, Warrick, TJ (possibly), and K-Wash already in the mix and Marvin looking to grab another WR in the draft, Palmer will have a variety of solid weapons to throw to. Brees didn't have receivers like that in SD until this year.

I see Palmer throwing for 3200-3500 yards and 25-30 touchdowns, taking the Bengals to the playoffs, and making the Pro Bowl in his second year as a starter. While he has to face several playoff teams, they were all teams with huge problems in the secondary, and hopefully he will get a couple of those teams in primetime and show the rest of the country what we already know.

Really ????

I've been high on him since they brought him in. Having him sit for the first entire season was genius ....... More so when Kitna was 0 and 4 and everyone was screaming for Palmer.

You could definitely see the difference in the last couple of games he played as opposed to the first ones. He was really coming on, and I also expect him to pick up where he left off.

Having a few of the softer defenses will help ease him back into it, but I'm really waiting for him to get another crack at the likes of the Ravens .... Steelers ... and Bills. He won't get his proper due till he's slicing and dicing the top defenses ..... and he will. It's only a matter of time.

Offensive line baby! We have a good line that could turn league's best if a few guys steop up a little -- SD's line this year wasn't even on the team in '03. That's why I think Palmer could be saved from having a sophomore slump, but it's still very possible.

I wasn't completely sold on Palmer when they took him at #1, and I was a big Leftwich fan and was hoping that they would choose him. After that, it was the hype machine that made me have ill will towards him, on top of the fact that Kitna started doing good things and they gave up on him. After the QB disasters in the '90s, I didn't understand how everyone could be so sold on Palmer when he hadn't really done anything of note, especially when we already had a QB that had a career year and was one of the main contributing factors to the turnaround in 2003.

If you look at many of my early posts on this board, I railed against Palmer for everything...but all that I wanted was convincing. I wanted him to show me what he could do before I bought into the hype. And then came the Dallas game...and the Washington game...and the biggest one of all, the Baltimore game. I was sold after the Washington game, but the Baltimore game showed me everything that I had wanted to see: poise, confidence, those beautiful deep passes in the 4th quarter...you could see the makings of a great QB in him.

So I wrote a post a while back and took everything back, as I said I would do if he proved me wrong. I was happy to be wrong, and I'm happy that we have a QB who has those skills in the early stages of his career. Palmer will be the one to lead us where we need to go, and I am a *Reformed Carson-Hater*.

Sophomore slump, :o you should never say that. Remember if it's bad it could happen to the Bengals. Come on, Joisey, Marvin has the glass half full, not half empty! :P

I don't really think Palmer will have a bad year next season...just noting, like kirk says, that it's still possible. 12.5 games does not the next [insert your favorite QB here] make.

That said, I was reasonably confident in Palmer's success coming out of the gate this year, and those 12.5 games have only increased my comfort level with him behind center.

I've always been sold on Carson Palmer. I've never seen anything in him but a big-time ball player. Even in the first game against the Jets, he showed that he has the ability to carry a team with his arm. He kind of reminds me of John Elway in that respect. He really showed that ability all year. It's only natural that he came up short and made mistakes along the way, but as he progresses watch out! He's got the size, the arm, the touch, the brain, the fire in the belly and most of all the poise.

The last time I felt this sure about a player was when Jerry Rice came out. All I needed to do was get a look at Rice in the Blue-Grey game to confirm that the leading receiver on a team that averaged over 500 yards a game in passing offense had learned enough about running routes and catching balls to be an impact plaer in the NFL if he had anywhere near the requisite size and speed. The rest was history.

With Palmer it's his poise. John Madden once wrote that the number one thing he looked for in a quarterback is that he be a guy who doesn't worry about anything. That's Palmer - and it's uncanny the way he has that attribute. The other thing is the touch he has with such a strong arm. What a beautiful ball he throws! To have those attributes in a big body gives you one of those guys that can eventually set new standards. Go back and look at the games that the Bengals won after doing nothing the whole game or even the games that Palmer screwed up and you'll see flashes of brilliance and that power to carry the team.

I obviously can't say enough about this guy - take note all you nay-sayers who say that the TubThumper never has anything good to say about the Bengals.

hey joisey...u dont always have to play devils advocate. :)

Ah, it's fun. Passes the time 'til next season. But to be honest the Palmer question has skittered around the back of my mind for a while now. I think I have something in common with redsfan2 here...just too much bad mojo at QB for the last 14 years. Even Carson, for all his success, ended up getting hurt before season's end. I wouldn't go so far as to say that raises questions about his durability...but his does leave his durability an open question. Akili could never stay healthy either, a fact somewhat overshadowed by his lousy play.

Like I said, it isn't that I've lost confidence in him. In fact, I've gained confidence, and I already had a pretty good opinion of Carson to begin with. But...I want a season. We got teased in 2004: typical rookie struggles early, then a blossoming...and then an injury...grrrrrrrrr. C'mon. Time to stop phuqueing around. He was supposed to be Mr. Franchise,. he showed us a glimpse of Mr. Franchise...now it's put up or shut up time. :player:

Yea, I can see that. I wonder how much the Bengals being -- realistically and not mathmatically -- out of the playoff race influenced the benching from injury. Safe than sorry I'm guessing -- hoping.

Nahh, he's just a jerk. :lol:B)
