walshfan
Foxsports 19 out of Dayton, Ohio has reported that Rudi Johnson has told the Bengal management that if they franchise him he wont play next year...apparently he wants a longterm contract or he's prepared to sit....Could he be asking for more than the franchise tag?? Interesting...

HairOnFire
Could he be asking for more than the franchise tag?? Interesting... Maybe, but I doubt it. Despite the fact that players are guaranteed top dollar most don't like the franchise tag due to the fact that the team only has to commit to the player for a single season. So if Rudi gets tagged but plays...then gets seriously injured...the Bengals would be well served to cast him off without a second glance. Rudi's total take would be a tick over 5mil. However, should Rudi get injured after signing a long term deal that averages less than 5 million per...even considerably less...then the Bengals would find themselves in a position where they probably couldn't cut him for several seasons due to the accelerated cap hit. BTW, I've reading plenty of articles and posts that claim that the going rate for a back of Rudi's age and skill level is about 3 million per. Well if you ask me, and you didn't, I'd say that number is short by about a million per.

BengalsFan77
this is just a rumor. rudi never said ne thing like that, nor would he. he has been nothing but a class act. if he had said something like that, then it would b all over the news. and i for 1 have yet to hear the 1st word about it. TubThumper
this is just a rumor. rudi never said ne thing like that, nor would he. he has been nothing but a class act. if he had said something like that, then it would b all over the news. and i for 1 have yet to hear the 1st word about it.If he said something like that, it may or may not be less than shrewd, but it would have little to do with class. It's business. Adhering to people's notions of class can be fatal when you're fighting for your life.Frankly, I'd just as soon see Rudi move on. I was enthusiastic about his replacing Corey Dillon, not because I was all bent out of shape about Dillon's antics, but becuase I thought a different style of runner would actually benefit the Bengals. (By the same token, I could see that Dillon's style is a great fit for the Patriots.) But, while Rudi Johnson has proven that last season wasn't a fluke, I'm not convinced that he's what the Bengals need to invest a lot of money in. A team should never completely fall in love with a player, and I'd like to see the Bengals let Rudi move on because they can easier afford to do that than bog money down on a guy that is still a little of a question mark. HoosierCat
Could he be asking for more than the franchise tag?? Interesting...Maybe, but I doubt it. I don't. Heck, his agent has already openly compared him to Alexander, who was at something like $8 million. But I expect that much of that is just negotiation rhetoric; certainly, I don't see the Bengals agreeing to anything more than a deal around the $5 million/year average mark. And that's overpaying, IMHO.As to the rumor about not playing if he's tagged and doesn't get a long-term deal, hogwash. He'd hardly be the first player to play under a one-year deal. But those kind of threats, too, are pretty standard in these kinds of negotiations.
shworge
Channel 12 had a feature as well on Rudi last night. According to the piece Rudi is asking for 6 years at 6 million per year (36 million total contract) and said if he gets tagged then he will sit out next year. They also had Marvin quoted as saying he will not sacrifice the future of his team for one player and that the franchise tag is an option. Bobcat Bengal
Cmon now....that would mean, according to my calculations, that he would get paid more than Chad Johnson.....OoookaaaayTHe problem is, Chad is top 5, MAYBE three, due to our Bengal Bias. (which I can deal with)Teams worry a WHOLE HELLUVA LOT more about Chad than they do Rudi, better believe that.I don't think Rudi is a top 5 back, and this is only because of the relatively weak class of FA RB's this year. shworge
I would be pretty disappointed if the Bengals gave Rudi 5 million a year much less 6 million a year. I would much rather see them sign Lamont Jordan for 2.5 million a year and give the rest to the defense and TJ.

I remember being at games commenting on how many people Denver and other's put upfront constantly to stop Rudi.Rudi's a top 10 back - if not a top 5 and proved that last year with his #'s!! (#6 over-all) You just can't plug in any old RB and get that production back - let alone the 2nd or 3rd best RB in the draft who hasn't proven a damn thing and did not look impressive when he did play.Rudi wants a long term deal because he deserves it from the Bengals and if they tag him for one year and he gets hurt - he loses that chance and is risking his career earning potential. Rudi's just doing what any other player in his situation would do.Christ you would think you guys went to the Mike Brown college of cheapness. Meanwhile the Bengals are spending $3+ million a year on slobs like Hardy and Webster and Smith and Thorton and others but no one says a thing about their production versus their cost.If you have to cut some of those guys then so be it. Eventually they'll get Rudi for close to 5 mil a year a nice signing bonus, and a 4-5 year deal I would think, and if they work it right they'll have room to stay intact and build their defense. shworge
Christ you would think you guys went to the Mike Brown college of cheapness. My argument has nothing to do with being cheap, it has everything to do with working within the constraints of the salary cap. Which is exactly what Marvin is talking about when he says he will not sacrifice the long term stability of the team for one player.

Notot mention I couldn't imagine him sitting on the sidelines, with all of his teamates, he apperently has a great relationship with, and just let them down like that. He'd IMO would be considered a Ricky Williams. Now there's a compelling argument. I keep forgetting about just how many teams stacked the line to stop Rudi. Washington even took out a safety and put in an additional linebacker. He got a lot more attention from defenses this year than last year and he still broke the club rushing record, and he stood up under a lot of punishment, which I've always recognized. Maybe I've been induced to sell the guy somewhat short. Nevertheless, with Palmer you can diversify the offense, and with a diversified offense, you may not need a horse like Rudi if his price tag is too high. I'm sure the newly enlightened Bengals brain-trust will figure it out.
shworge
It's not uncommon for franchised players to threaten to sit out. They have no leverage in this situation and they think by doing that they can get some. If Marvin feels Rudi truly means this then he will tell Rudi to find a team willing to give us a first round pick for him.
