ShulaSteakhouse
And led the team for the season officially. That is impressive for a guy who hardly played the first 3-4 games. He is the only LB who seems to find the offensive backfield more than once a game.Hard not to be excited about Madeiu, Ratliff, Geathers and Johnson, they were all really impressive the 2nd half of the season ecspecially. They will have some tough decisions to make with veterans this off-season on defense, some positions have to be upgraded due to the over-all poor performances this season. jjakq27
What a great year by Johnson. Definite candidate for rookie defensive player of the year along with Madieu Williams.Isn't it nice to not wait three or four years for a guy to develop or realize he is a bust (see Reinard Wilson, James Francis, Rickey Dixon, among others). I won't go so far as to say James Francis was a bust. His rookie year, he did everything from sacks, interceptions for touchdowns and block field goals. I think as he progressed as a linebacker, Cincy' stopped using him all over the field as a player teams had to account for like he was used his rookie season. Over all though, he made a lot of plays with sacks, interceptions and fumble recoveries. He won't be remembered as the best Bengal linebacker ever, but hardly worth the insults derived with guys like Reinard Wilson ( dumbest player in '97 draft ) and Rickey ( I couldn't smell an interception if it was served on a plate with steaming rice and vegetables ) Dixon. Glad to hear Landon Johnson has played well. But I doubt he's our MLB of the Future. He may be able to push Hardy though next preseason. - Interesting mix of youth at linebacker we'll be looking forward to in '05. Abdullah, and Webster should solidify the group. Won't matter if we don't get better play out of our Safeties... Perhaps Thomas Davis is our answer ( S, Georgia ) as our new starting Strong Safety.?? jjakq27
My beef with Francis is that he regressed from that first season. I know that was during the depths of the Shula era but here is a guy that wouldn't work out during the offseason for $250K. They make him captain thinking it would spur him on and that didn't work either. But I am not bitter.... I hope that next year we are able to watch all of the guys you mention for the entire season. A force at strong safety would be a good pick also.
HoosierCat
While we're on the subject of LBs how about some props for Marcus Wilkins and his second special teams FF this year? Mark this guy down as a keeper.

bengalboomer7
We may see a very interesting position battle with Abdullah, webster, and johnson. Forget Hardy, he's gone, or at least never starting again. let's go ahead for now and pencil Webster in a MLB. Abdullah was thought to be next in line but with the improved play of Landon and and offseason to bulk up some. We might have our outsie LB of the future!! bengalboomer7
I completely forgot about Wilkins. Totally agree, he earned himself a permanent special teams job, with him a myles our special teams should be solid for years!

TubThumper
Just think that Johnson has accomplished what he has playing out of position and underweight at 215 lbs.
jjakq27
Just think that Johnson has accomplished what he has playing out of position and underweight at 215 lbs. There is alot to be said for being fundamentaly sound. Perhaps our coaches selected him based on his ability to do what he is supposed to do every play rather than on what he might do in the future. Landon had 12 tackles Sunday. Even against sub-par o-lineman that's exactly what a good player should do - dominate and/or produce above normal.Looks like the Bengals are picking at #17 again next year also. Kirkendall
Cutler also said the Bengals front office does NOT want Rudi. Honestly, I think he talks to hear himself talk. Not a fan.
oldschooler
Hell I don`t know what to think ? NFL.com has Landon Johnson having 87 tackles.http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/492967http://www.nfl.com/teams/stats/CINBut Alan Cutler said he had 131 tackles and Mark Curnuttesays he has 133 tackles. • Starting middle linebacker Nate Webster, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in Game 3, continues to rehabilitate in Florida and could be ready by the start of the first minicamp in April. Rookie linebacker Landon Johnson, who started in Webster's absence, led the team with 133 tackles.http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...SPT02/501040380And it is mentioned in an USA Today article.LB Landon Johnson, a rookie who started out of position in the middle in Webster's absence, led the team with 133 tackles.http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/bengals/home.htm

Kirkendall
It's just stats...Tell that to the players agents. A lot of positions don't require stats. Didn't Springs get an awesome pay-day and didn't even have one interception his final year -- declared for the draft as a junior? I think he only picked off six passes his entire college career. He was drafted third in the '97 draft and signed a 7-year $20 million contract -- largest EVER for a cornerback coming into the NFL and largest at the number three pick. Included in the deal was a $6 million signing bonus with escalators and incentives; plus it was, at the time, the largest Seahawks contract. All because of a final season with no interceptions -- of course, I'm basing that off memory.I just think there's so much more to the game than stats. And we see how agents use stats as a marketing ploy because a lot of these players today earn way more than they should have. Just my opinion though..
