oldschooler
Bengals Roster Moves 12-1-04, 5:00 p.m. The Bengals today made the following roster moves: Acquired DT Shaun Smith on waivers from New Orleans. Smith (6-2, 320; South Carolina) is a first-year NFL player. He spent 2003 on the Dallas practice squad. He opened 2004 training camp with Dallas, was claimed on waivers by Arizona on Sept. 1, and was signed to the New Orleans practice squad on Sept. 7 after being waived Sept. 6 by Arizona. He was signed Sept. 18 to the Saints 53-player roster and played in five games, with 16 tackles, before being waived yesterday. Placed rookie DT Matthias Askew of Michigan State on the Reserve/Injured list. Askew has been out of action since suffering a knee injury in practice on Nov. 25. He played in five games this season, with 3 tackles. Signed DE Derrick Crawford to the practice squad. Crawford (6-3, 270; Texas A&M-Commerce) was originally signed by the Bengals on April 27 of this year as a college free agent. He played in Cincinnati’s first three preseason games (2 tackles) and was waived Sept. 1.

Son of a...(sigh)...what's that 13, 14 guys on IR? Oh, well, at least he got a small jump-start on next year.As for Smith...well, guess we needed someone to fill the hole in the rotation. But the Saints DTs pretty much suck, so I can't get too excited about picking up someone even they didn't want. Can't hurt to clog up the middle a bit, tho. jjakq27
The odd thing is, Marvin lead off his news conference saying that Askew would be out for Sunday's game, not that he was going on IR. I am all for not tipping off the opposition but all this secrecy is a little much. I doubt that the Ravens were scheming against Askew. Hopefully this guy can be productive for the rest of the season.
kybengalsfan
Yeah, never know, this guy may feel like the Bengals are giving him new life. May help us!

Or maybe they had their eye on this guy Smith -- apparently he was Langston Moore's backup in college, so they've seen him -- and decided to "promote" Askew's injury so they could grab him. In any event, yeah, let's hope the guy can contribute.

At least the Smith dude was a Gamecock w/ Langston so no doubt ML & Co. got to see a lot of him in action. Plus he's got game experience. That's always got to count for something even if it was w/ the Aints.Still, gotta itch my head over the whole damn DT thing, though. Whole lotta players to choose from after roster cuts including waiver wire players. Whole lotta other options that coulda been considered after the Gardener debacle mercifully ended.Anyway...put the big bastid in and let him knock the GD slop outta somebody

oldschooler
The Saints were voted as having the deepest D-line in the NFL.He has 16 tackles in 5 games. Langston Moore has 20 tackles in 5 games.Hopefully this guy comes in and can contribute and be a solid DT toour rotation. He is still young and maybe our coaches can coach him up?That would be awesome if we sured up our DT tackle spot a little beforethe season ends. Then they wouldn`t have to focus on it so much in Free Agency and the draft. (as much)I can dream can`t I ?
skyline
It's possible. I won't hold my beath, but there is a glimmer of hope for him, I think.
The_Next_Big_Thing
Marvin built a lot of the defense in Baltimore on guys who were good but didn't quite get it done on their former teams and good draft picks.Deltha certainly seems to have panned out, I'll give the 'aint a chance. He just needs the Marvin magic.
HoosierCat
From what I've garnered from the NO media and Saints fan board, Smith's release appears to be due in large part to him ticking off Jim Haslett. Apparently he and 1st round DT Jonathan Sullivan were inactive for the recent Atlanta game, and for some dumb reason they decided to go stuff their faces at the free buffet in the Atlanta press room before the game. I can see why this might be a no-no.FWIW, NO fans appear to regard both Smith and Sullivan as stiffs.

Ravens D wasn't built on 11 number one draft picks. Guys that were picked later and developed were a big part of their success. ML gets guys like this to see if they have a spark to go with their size.Absolutely no downside to giving this big hoss some time with the team. I just think Stacy Andrews was inactive. He must not be ready to play in a real game. They have him on the 53 man roster. If they were to put him on the Practice Squad another team would surely pick him up. And yeah I called you Shirley ...lol Just kidding I`m not sure what is up with Miller. He didn`t record any statsagainst the Browns ...but not many of our Defensive players DID ! Anyway here is this weeks injured list.Pos. membengal
No way are they putting Stacy Andrews into a game this year, at least not one that matters. He is a long-term project. If you are looking from something out of him this year, your expectations are way way way out of wack.
