The_Next_Big_Thing
Not only that, but Geathers is rejuvenating Clemons and Smith. All three of these guys are getting some pressure on the QB lately. Justin Smith is #9 in the AFC with 6 sacks, Clemons has 1/2 a sack less than Smith. The defensive line that had us all cringing and groaning when they gave the QB an hour to pass the ball on each play early in the season is getting it done.I'm looking forward to next season when We have Askew ready to go as well as Geathers, Clemons, and Smith. oldschooler
Wow...what a find this guy was. 3.5 sacks and counting...Yeah he is looking like a steal ! And just think...we got Geathers AND Deltha O`Nealfor basically trading them DJ Williams (17th pick in the 1st round)for Chris Perry. Seems like a fair trade to me ! jamesbrooks21
Yeah it looks like we finally got someone in there who can actually draft a team. Now if only Askew and Andrews will pan out.........
Bobcat Bengal
Yeah it looks like we finally got someone in there who can actually draft a team.Coach Lewis learned straight from the best in the biz, IMO.Ozzie Newsome and the Baltimore Ravens. It doesn't hurt that we upgraded our scouting staff, Greg Seamon and Duke Tobin onboard is great news as well.I think we're going to continue to see great drafts from this point on.I thought '03 was good, this one was probably better, just because of the mix of quantity (11 players) and quality. turningpoint
yeah i think geathers is only a passing situation DE, don't expect him to start. We still need a big run stuffing DT.Also DJ williams looked like Ray Lewis lastnight, but then again Marvin Lewis knows LB's and he wouldn't of passed up on the next ray lewis i hope.Anyways i think the bengals should get beast of a LB to go with simmons and webster next season or simmons and hardy, either or. Can I ask how much bigger than 6'6" tall, 315 lbs. and 6'1" tall, 300 lbs. you are looking for? Marvin knows LBs and liked Landon Johnson, Caleb Miller, and Nate Webster. Do you want to draft linebackers every year?
kevnz
Geathers has shown flashes of brilliance when he's allowed to rush the QB. I hate to see any player injured, but Tony Williams going down was the best thing that could have happened for our young guys. While we could always use a "run stuffing DT" I think we've got some players on the line now to not have that be a screaming priority (1st round) in the upcoming draft. I'd much prefer to see the team draft a TE in the first. Plus I'd really really like to see what Askew can do if he can stay healthy. Fortunately he hasn't been badly injured, just enough to keep him out of the game. He actually had better draft reviews than Geathers, but like Geathers everyone said he was a season away. It seems the draft talking heads were off by about half a season in their assesment of Geathers.Do you want to draft linebackers every year?Maybe. Considering how linebackers play special teams they are more likely to be cycled out as the become too expensive so it is a possibility that the team may draft a linebacker every season. But I'd hate to see the team use first day picks every year on a linebacker....
bengalsfan33
Marvin's past draft looks like it actually worked out. Geathers with a few sacks, Madieu with 70 tackles, Landon Johnson has looked good at times, Keiwan has made big plays at times(yesterday's punt return), and punter Kyle Larson led the league in punt yard average at one time. Yes i'd love us to draft a 6'4 LB with speed and is a monster, pretty much a big ray lewis, and i think it's that LB from texas. And no those dt's aren't good enough if were ranked 28th against the run. The_Next_Big_Thing
We were ranked 28th against the run because one of them isn't even playing due to an injury and the other just stepped up and has helped our defense to improve. Do you even pay attention to the team?
ShulaSteakhouse
Bengals need to draft LB's BADLY - in fact they could use at least 2 new starters there IMO - I don't know how you do it but there has to be faster, tougher guys out there than Simmons and Hardy - both are inconsistent and have lost a step. I'm tired of watching QB's and Rb's carve them up every week, aside from their 1-2 good games each year. I used to be a big Simmons fan, but enough is enough. That said I'm sure he'd be back before Hardy will, if either of them are cut or traded.Landon has done a nice job filling-in and still has potential - but right now he's best used as a 2nd string/situational LB, a nice player to have for his price. Caleb Miller is junk at this point and cannot be counted on at all until he at least decides to bulk up and get serious about it, and just get better at stopping the run period. HoosierCat
Shula, I disagree. You forget or ignore the IR list, which includes the guy who was supposed to be our starting MLB, and who coming along well before he got hurt, Nate Webster, as well as our leading ST tackler from last year, Khalid Abdullah. Between the workout the youngsters are getting filling in this year and the return of these guys next year, LB is not a priority.
ShulaSteakhouse
I still think it is, look at their poor #'s, and the way they've, the majority of the time, have given up huge numbers to any good RB and no-name QB's chew them up and have career days. Even Marvin praised the d-line for how well they played Sunday (no mention of anyone else of course). They can look good against bad offenses once or twice a year and on MNF, but outside of that they really, really stink bad - and the LB's on this team hardly ever make plays outside of those types of games. Webster wasn't doing anything special and with his size he may get hurt every single year for extended periods as a starter. Hardy and Simmons are just too inconsistent and are on the downsides of their careers. Their contracts may keep them around, who knows. But even with Webster competing for a spot, Hardy could easily be replaced and Webster is not "that" good at his best - and is in a critical position that calls for someone more talented ultimately.I can't imagine Marvin keeping the same set of LB's next year. They sorely need a Lewis/Urlacher/Thomas/Brooks/Porter type of guy who is a step above everyone talent-wise and can make plays. I really don't think Webster is it for the long haul any ways. HoosierCat
I'm not saying they don't need to keep the position in mind, but I don't see it as something commanding attention in FA or the first 2-3 rounds of the draft. I think Webster was looking OK earlier this year; he started off poorly, but that was to be expected in a new system playing with new guys, and he was improving game-to-game. I'm not worried about his size; Ray-Ray isn't that big, either (and no, I'm not comparing the two in any measure beyond that!).I agree that Simmons is on the back end of his career and Hardy is thisclose to done. But Abdullah is the heir apparent to Simmons and Landon should do well in Hardy's spot. Once Webster gets healthy Miller should have time to bulk up. If I'm looking for LBs in the '05 draft right now, I'm looking for small school sleepers that can be groomed on STs over the next 1-3 years, and move up the depth charts as guys like Hardy and Simmons run down.I'm far more concerned about TE, CB, DT and (last but certainly not least) center. They just let Mike Mabry go today, so I don't know WTF is up with that position right now...

I'm not saying he's done, he ought to have a few years left. But he's in year 7 now. Hardy's a 9-year vet and he's clearly fading. Unless Brian proves to be one of those rare Seau types, we'll likely see him start to slow down over the next couple of years.
oldschooler
I was just looking at some stats of DE`s that were drafted in the1st round. And Geathes compares pretty good in stats to them. Kenechi Udeze has 25 tackles and 4 sacks in 11 games. Will Smith has 28 tackles and 4 sacks in 11 games.Jason Babin 41 tackles and 2 sacks in 11 games. (playing OLB)Geathers has 10 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 9 games. He has seen limited playing time up until recently even. He mostly plays on passing downs too.I think we got a diamond in the rough. I`m glad to see that we got a 4th round pick that is playing like a 1st round pick !!!
