walzav29
On the grocery list of things we need, be sure to get a defensive player with a fire under his ass. I was watching Joey Porter last week, and I thought he was going to kill someone. We have no one who has been shot or arrested for murder. That's the type of killa we need. Someone intimidating without a wrap-sheet obviously, but someone to give our horrible D some character, and to hold the other guys accountable. Kirkendall
Try keeping the topic title somewhat in coordination of what the subject is so we have some organization on the forum. Thanks walz......oh, and you're absolutely right.
The_Next_Big_Thing
Nate Webster is that kind of guy. That's one of the reasons he was brought in.

The_Next_Big_Thing
Trouble is, when Webster was here we were still being run over. Oh really? He had THREE games to show us something. Granted, against the Jets our entire defense looked horrible. He didn't do a whole lot, but it was his first game with the team, and I blame the entire DEFENSE for not being ready for this one, not one guy.In his second game, against Miami, he was everything we had hoped he could be. Sure, Miami isn't that strong an offense, but Webster pulled off a nice sack, and disrupted the quarterback several other times. He led the defense in this game, I was there and he amazed me.In his third game, had had 6.5 tackles before being injured and despite our team completely folding, Webster was looking effective. Someone intimidating without a wrap-sheet obviously, but someone to give our horrible D some character, and to hold the other guys accountable. There are normally two major obstacles in teams obtaining someone who is evil and mean enough to have committed these criminal offenses, yet they're also a smart and talented enough athlete to play pro football.#1: Nine out of ten times they come with an extensive rap-sheet, and are currently incarcerated or on parole, or they're on the run from the law and only one appearance on "America's Most Wanted" away from getting that way!#2: They already play for Baltimore..................just joking, just joking! But you do bring up a valid point. Ever since the Bengals great saftey David Fulcher retired, the Cincinnati Bengal players just don't often carry the persona of being "hard hitting ass kickers"! Honestly it's pretty damn hard to convince other teams that you're a bunch of bad asses, when you got a defensive back that used to teach math or a player like Kitna running around with a crucifix cross on his hat, and wearing a "Jesus Calls My Plays!" T-shirt. Hardly the stuff for striking fear in your opponents heart, unless of course you invite them to join your bible study. That WILL scare the s**t out of them!Only ONE player that I know of did the devout religious thing and was known to be a bad ass as well was Reggie White. He hit people so hard, it was as if he actually was trying to kill them so they could meet the Lord right away!! Also you have to remember there is a down side to playing it up as being the "bad boys". Back when the Raiders used to thrive on their bad boy, "win at all costs" image, (which was before they adopted this more recent "old folks retirement home" image) they consistently led the league in penalties, and penalty yardage! I would prefer to find a medium among the choices above. Not too much of the reckless bad boy, and not too much of the overly focused good boy. But not too far from being able to employ either one in case it's needed.
ShulaSteakhouse
Mike Brown won't spend money on defense. He has always skimped there. Just look at the players the Bengals have let go over the years for nothing or over a few 100k. They have to draft better and be more creative with the salary cap to get there. Leaders aren't born by shooting their mouth off, but by establishing themselves as a great player over time. They don't have to say a thing. If it's a Ray Lewis type who is loud and motivating, all the better.I've sensed the defense here gives up often over the years in games as no matter what one particular player does, or how hard he tries, there's always a weak link behind him ready to negate all of his work.Otherwise we'll keep waiting around for that one lucky season the stars align and they have an 8-8 season...oh that was last year and 1997. I haven't missed a game this year at PB, and I have to disagree. Look at our stats then and now; not much has changed. He didn't look good in pre-season and once the season started he was being knocked around and knocked down by Cocaine Lewis and other running backs. Wish I could be as positive and ML and yourself about him, but I just didn't see it. No, I'm not blind. I believe the rookies at doing just as well, if not better. Hardy has a great game last week, but you didn't hear from him the last 5 games at all. Smith has two sacks in one drive vs Denver, then goes back into his shell. Clemons does the same thing to a lesser extent. Webster had one very good game and the rest he was nowhere to be found. Brian Simmons, same thing.I guess it's a talent problem, they don't show up every week. Seems to have been that way for a while here. Not sure what the problem is exactly. jditty47
man u guys are picky. Webster had what, 11 tackles in 1 game and that was right b4 the injury. He was gonna be good for us regardless of size, and he brought passion to a defense that is lacking it.
BengalszoneBilly
and he brought passion to a defense that is lacking it. At TIMES, yes he did. Other times he was no different than any other Bengals defensive player. I don't fault him specifically for this. I don't really know who's at fault. I wish I did. ArmyBengal
Boy this keeps coming back up..... Webster would have been much better than what we saw if we had what ??? Oh yeah, the offseason priority, a FATA** DT that we didn't get. For how much we have thrown that horse a beating, it should be dead by now !!! Anyway, Webster's fire is missed, whatever his play was or wasn't, the fire is gone on D. WHODEY !!!

U cant know everything and be a player like ray ray off the bat. It takes time. If he was in there all season u'd be happy he was in there, and i bet our run D wouldnt be as bad as it is now. jditty47
i doubt our linebacker corp will be changed at all next year. hardy will be the only diff on the bench, landon or caleb will be taking his spot...im guessing landon. Nate will be back in the middle. Our DLine will be the next to be upgraded. Linebacker and Secondary this year, DLine next to finish the job. Next year is the year for his 3 year plan to work. In my opinion we will be there at the end of it. Playoffs are imminent.
