BengalBobNC Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 There is an article on SI about Chad Johnson having fun with the Cleveland DBs:An excerpt:The Cincinnati Bengals' brash wide receiver, known for his quick feet and bold predictions, sent each of Cleveland's four defensive backs a care package containing a handwritten note and a bottle of pink Pepto Bismol."I think some of the guys are taking it personal," said Browns cornerback Daylon McCutcheon, who got a good laugh out of Johnson's gesture. "But I think for the most part, he (Johnson) is not an in-your-face guy. He just likes to have fun. He enjoys playing football. He's a jokester."Sounds like Chad is ready to have a big day! Quote
TippCityRick Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Saw that too (seems I'm not the only one not getting a lot done this afternoon!). I hope he doesn't get his block knocked off Sunday. But as my boss, the Browns fan said, "I don't think they got anyone that can hit him hard enough to knock him out!" Quote

Barbarian Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 SIGH!!!!***dammit, Chad. Now you give the Terds' Secondary INCENTIVE to bust you in your f**king mouth!!!I hope you get just that--A FAT f**king LIP!!!!IN FACT, SO FAT--THAT YOU'LL STFU AND PLAY and those fatass lips will seal that big gapping hole in the middle of your damned head that keeps flapping.Your team is 1-3. So, why don't you just concentrate on the game??? That s**t isn't one bit funny in my f**king book.f**k you, Chad. You're numbers aren't that great this year. You need to concentrate on the f**king game more. Quote
BengalBobNC Posted October 13, 2004 Author Report Posted October 13, 2004 Yeah...I wish Chad would just let his numbers (or final score) do all the talking too.Last years guarantee over Kansas City was bold. I think he did it to fire up the Bengals and for when they DID win, no one could say the Chiefs got caught looking past the "Bungals".Still, shut up and play.Paul Brown: When you lose, say little. When you win, say even less.I guess he should have also said: When you are preparing to play them this week, shut the f**k up entirely!Right Barb?! Quote

Kirkendall Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Part of me hates this; gives fuel to the other team, yada yada.Another part of me loves this. It brings more character to this team and sometimes, as it did against KC, brings a little intensity to this team – something we desperately need this season.I guess this is a good two-sided argument.harry palmer needs to get betterThat's IT! ShulaSteakhouse Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 If the entire Bengals' team had CJ's confidence and passion they'd win every game.If the Bengals get punked again by the Turds then it's their own fault for being sissies. If it takes that kind of attitude to get the "doormat" out of the Bengals psyche then so be it. Just once I'd like to see someone on the Bengals' defense knock the crap out of someone instead of punching the clock and mailing it in every Sunday and then hear Marvin's best Lebeau non-chalant spin job at the press conference. I'm tired of hearing "we need to get better at tackling and get off the field on 3rd down" every single frickin' week.Hey Marv, how bout not giving up an average of 7 yards on FIRST DOWN for once!! BengalszoneBilly Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 What if Chad goes out there and backs it up...AGAIN mind you, and the Bengals win in a romp!?! What then? I seriously doubt anyone here will be having anymore hissy fits if Chad decides to run his mouth and make some bold predictions. ESPECIALLY if he's batting .1000 when it comes to putting his money where his mouth is! In fact folks will probably be pissed if he doesn't make more of them! But honestly...predicting anything about playing the Browns this season doesn't compare to predicting the win against the undefeated Chiefs last season, but I'll take it anyway. AS LONG AS WE WIN...RIGHT MR. CHATTY CHAD!?! Quote
BengalBax Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Why does this idiot even open his d@mn mouth??As if we aren't already in a hole that's deep as he11, he makes it worse by saying this crap!SHUT UP AND MAKE A PLAY CHAD! QUIT TALKING ABOUT IT AND ACTUALLY DO IT! Quote
jditty47 Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 GREATEST thing ive heard happen by somebody in a LONG LONG time. I was dying laughing as i read that s**t. Chad is the motherf**kin man. He knows this is a game and hes having fun with it. If you cant take it, stop him and shut him up. If not, its another classic to add to the gaurantee over the chiefs.I wish chad was running for pres instead of bush Quote
kybengalsfan Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 BengleBax: I don't think there is a need to call Chad an idot, or any other derogatory name. I only wish all of the guys played with the heart this guy has. The hustle and determination that Pete Rose showed on the baseball field reminds me of the vigor that Chad displays. Man, you really are negative. Got anything good to say about any of the Bengals? Quote
The_Next_Big_Thing Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Those of you saying Johnson is fueling a fire and being an idiot and not backing up his words, ARE COMPLETE AND TOTAL IDIOTS.Chad does back up his words, he leads the AFC in being double covered, he has made some amazing catches, and he's still working to get the same chemistry with Carson he had with Kitna last year. He's due to explode against Cleveland, and even the Browns players, most of whom he is friends with off the field, took it as good humor. Quote

You need to concentrate on the f**king game more. Hopefully if you are a professional football player you don't need outside motivation to get up for a game... much less a division/rivalry game. I think the Browns secondary was already motivated to shut down the best player for their in-state rivals. These guys all know each other and are just playing around, plus he's supporting a good cause. Pepto Bismol is donating money to the National Breast Cancer Society for every touchdown he scores in October.Give the guy a break. Quote
schweinhart Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Yeah, plus think of the short-term sales increase of Pepto in Cleveland from all the fans who will be chucking bottles of the stuff onto the field come Sunday Quote
Kirkendall Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 Hopefully if you are a professional football player you don't need outside motivation to get up for a game...I agree for the most part, but all teams need motivation. This is the dark-horse of football in general. This is why upsets happen, because the lack motivation "expecting" -- there's that evil word -- to win.Remember back last year when the team looked like Super Bowl studs against the Chiefs but lacked any sort of life against the Cards? Players at times need motivation, whether it's the lack of season-long motivation installed on this team currently or the motivation to beat the Ravens or Steelers -- both inter-divisional -- this team has proven they need some outside jiving to bring their game up a notch. We certainly don't have the team where Lewis can stand in front of pre-game speechs wave a magic wand and say, "you're motivated". God knows we need CJ to start acting like a jackass for some sort of chance at a good season to just perhaps get the lifeless defense back into a somewhat average defense.. it's a hope, a blind man's hope. Quote
Tampa Bengal Posted October 14, 2004 Report Posted October 14, 2004 The Bengals should have motivation already this game is a must win. To provoke the Browns could be a bad idea because it could create a kind of reverse motivation where the other team gets pumped up, pissed off and kicks butt. But I like the thought of sending the Pepto because its clever, it renews some of the team rivalry and promotes a Cincinnati company's product which helps the economy(too much debate for me) but if the Bengals lose its back to the bashing from the media and the bad jokes on late night tv...you know the story. (UK in my name is United Kingdom, NOT university of kentucky!) is this attitude you have that says professional sportsmen can't have fun, take delight in their game or occasionally bad mouth an opponent. This thing with Chad and the Pepto stuff, it's funny as hell, let him do it and back him up. I saw the Chiefs game last year and in the pre-match he was getting slated for the guarantee he made the previous week. Then Willie Anderson showed up saying "Well I wouldn't have said it, but I'm gonna back him up on it." That's the attitude I want to see.. in fact I want Kelley and TJ to publicly back Chad up. And yes I want them to deliver! More widely, why does the league get their panties in a bind over players celebrating? If Joe Horn wants to hide his cellfone in the post good for him, I laughed my ass off. It was entertaining. The Terrell Owens thing (a pen hidden in the sock to sign the football when he scored) was equally good. It's all tied in, this game is supposed to be fun for everyone, including the players. They aren't our slaves to be ordered around for our entertainment at their detriment. So finally I want Caleb Miller, Kevin Hardy and Brian Simmons to kidnap Lee Suggs' dog 2nite and send him polaroids of the dog blindfolded with an obviously fake toy gun to its head. Attached should be a note saying "This is what we do to dogs in Cincinnati when they don't obey their masters. Love, the Bengals Linebackers." Quote
wookie Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 One thing needs to be made clear, and that is those tend to be the minority and not the majority. We also have a lot of people over here who go to great lengths to try and curb violence on TV and any form of sexuality who would want the NFL to go to touch football and get rid of cheerleaders. This country tends to be way too concerned with offending anyone's tender sensibilities and hopefully we'll get past that soon. I for one got a major kick out of Chad's prank, as did most of the guys he pranked. The NFL tries to curb taunting and excessive celebrating because they can get a little out of control, and be too time consuming, and because a lot of the athletes cannot tolerate the celebrations. I would hate to see Chad go all out for a TD celebration and then have a LB or DB go for a head shot or his knees the next time he was on the field. Too many players with over-sized egos in todays game who have no qualms about trying to seriously hurt another player, and possibly end his career. I think they should try to see the fun in the game, and work harder to make sure the next celebration belongs to them, but thats not the case.Chad is the perfect example of a player who still has the kid in him that played pick up games with his friends. He takes his job very seriously, but has a lot of fun doing it and the NFL needs more players like him.Maybe in the near future the NFL will realize that they are, in fact, removing a lot of the fun from the game, for the Players and spectators...but at the same time most of the players should try to celebrate less. I'm tired of seeing guys making tackles 10+ yards down the field and pounding their chests. Scoring a TD is a lot more difficult, making a stop behind the line or during a goal-line stand, game-changing turnover(not just any turnover), and an electrifying kick return are things to celebrate.BTW - haven't a few of the soccer celebrations been banned??? If not, how far do you think the officials would let it go?? Quote
Kirkendall Posted October 15, 2004 Report Posted October 15, 2004 One thing I don't understand about some of you Americans.. (UK in my name is United Kingdom, NOT university of kentucky!) is this attitude you have that says professional sportsmen can't have fun, take delight in their game or occasionally bad mouth an opponent. Well that's a 2-fold argument. The first one suggests the players and teams play for us, therefore we are the clients. They are paid ten-times more than soccer or rugby players across the Atlantic therefore we have a greater say on how our team acts (at least we believe so); either as professionals or kids that get paid. Either way, in the end, as customers -- or board members for more corporate literates -- most of us (all American professional sports) demand results from a level that's acceptable from the majority with a level of professionalism. The other side of the argument is what you're saying. And I agree, most of it is light-hearted humor which is very fun and the examples you cited had me falling out off my couch laughing so hard. You need to realize though, the NFL isn't just a game anymore. It's the livelihood of tens of thousands of people -- players, front office, league officials, etc.. -- Therefore a level of professionalism is involved to entice everyone; not just those that love off-the-wall celebrations and intaginisations.I don't know. I can understand both sides of the argument though... Quote
