here's the answer to our questions re: DE/DT from bengals.com:

Patterson promoted; Lynch waived

9/23/2004 - 3:20 p.m.

With defensive lineman Carl Powell most likely out until the Oct. 17 game in Cleveland and rookie defensive tackle Matthias Askew recovering from a similar arthroscopic procedure, the Bengals Thursday called up defensive end Elton Patterson from the practice squad and released fullback James Lynch to make room on the roster.

Powell, who played a strong game at both end and tackle against the Dolphins Sunday night, could get as much as three weeks rest because the Bengals have a bye Oct. 10.

Patterson, a second-year player taken in the seventh round out of Central Florida in the 2003 draft, was on the roster but inactive for all 16 games last year. That could change with the Bengals down to six healthy linemen and one of them, rookie end Robert Geathers, just coming back from an injured ankle.

If last year is an indication, the Bengals plan to keep Lynch, a first-year player, on the practice squad. But first he has to clear waivers in the next 24 hours. They are down to one fullback in Jeremi Johnson, although tight ends Reggie Kelly and Tony Stewart could probably be pressed into service.

Elton looked good getting off the line at end vs. 2nd and 3rd teamers in pre-season. It's probably now or never time for him, so he might make the most of any chance he gets. He'd be faster at end than Clemons.

Seems like Elton did log some DT time in pre-season, too, but Clemons is a better fit inside on rotation, probably better than Powell.

Regardless, whoever is in the DT rotation besides Moore is giving up a lot of heft across the line.
