To add on to Joisey's post... Shane Matthews

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Quarterback Shane Matthews is getting another chance at proving he can play in the NFL, and he credits his advancing age for the latest opportunity.

After spending most of last season as a backup in Cincinnati, the 11-year veteran will play behind Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe. The Bills signed Matthews Monday to fill in for Travis Brown, who will miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained left knee.

"Teams try to call old guys and I'm an old guy," said the 34-year-old Matthews, who did not take a snap last year. "I'm excited to be here and ready to do whatever they need me to do."

While Brown was getting hurt in Saturday's 30-17 loss at Indianapolis, just days after rookie J.P. Losman broke his left leg in practice, Matthews was playing golf in Florida after the Bengals didn't offer him a contract over the offseason.

When the Bills came calling Sunday afternoon, Matthews was swimming with his children at his country club.

"It happens all the time in the NFL," Matthews said. "You hate to see guys go down, but it just happens. It's part of the deal."

Brown was the Bills' projected backup while Losman, who is expected to miss at least half the season, was being groomed as Bledsoe's successor.

"Fortunately for Travis it's not too severe and he'll be back here soon," Matthews said. "In the meantime, I just have to be ready to play in case something happens to Drew."

Though Matthews will have just one full practice under his belt before he makes his Bills debut on Thursday in the team's final preseason game at Detroit, quarterbacks coach Sam Wyche isn't worried about putting the veteran behind center.

"We'll isolate it down to things he has done before, and things he's already familiar with," Wyche said. "We'll introduce him to our terminology, and when mistakes start to happen we'll stop and go back one play. That's what he'll have for the game."

Matthews broke into the NFL with Chicago in 1993 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida. His best season came with the Bears in 1999, when he had 1,645 yards passing, with 10 touchdowns in seven starts and eight appearances. He also has spent time in Washington and Carolina.

He has started 22 games in his career, completing 59 percent of his attempts with 30 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, and has a career pass rating of 74.4.

The Bills are not expected to place either Brown or Losman on injured reserve. Instead, the team will head into the regular season with four quarterbacks on the roster, including former NFL Europe product Greg Zolman.

i always wondered what happend to wilsion now i know thanks

Against Tampa Bay, the Bengals saw and heard from Wilson plenty of times. <_<

With Abdullah's injury, I could see signing Johnson as an insurance policy.

I want Reinard back!

I am not sure about Reinard Wilson...

But I do remember the year that The Bengals switched back to a 4-3 and used him as a pass rushing DE.

"In 2001, they moved Wilson back to defensive end in a 4-3 alignment and he responded with nine sacks despite playing mainly on third downs. The pressure applied by Wilson and last season's No. 1 pick, Justin Smith, helped turn the defense into a top-10 caliber unit while setting a franchise record with 48 sacks."

What really makes that amazing is that he only started 5 games that year.

"Started at right defensive end in the first five games of the season… Suffered a mild concussion in practice prior to Game Six vs. Chicago (10/21)… Saw action as a reserve for the remainder of the season… "

Smith also had his best year with Wilson playing at the other DE position.

So yea IF getting Wilson would take our DL back to how it played in 2001 I would be for it.

But the fact is that Wilson didn't do crap in 2002 and hasn't really played since then.

And who would we Cut ?

What we need right now is a LB or two and maybe a DT....

By the way here is an interesting read about him from his coach at FSU.

Coach warns about moving Wilson to LB

Wilson might not be a bad pick up for the veterans minimun. We already know what he can do, just look at his sack numbers (9) when he was going in to free agency. He gets a long term contract and then nothing. He is definitely a player that plays when it is to his advantage. Give him a one year deal to prove himself and see what happens.
