Chris Mortensen: (11:04 AM ET ) The preseason game had the smell of a set-up. The Patriots and Bengals play in week 14. I think Belichick wanted to get Palmer cozy. I could be wrong, but that's what I think. Palmer has a chance to have a better "first" year than Manning because he sat a season and Peyton played right off the bat. But, again, I'm not sure. Physically,Palmer is more gifted than about 90 percent of the QBs in the NFL. He is surrounded with talent and a good O-line

<_< I'd be a little more inclined to believe that if it weren't for the blitzes ...... the roughing call .... and the fact that BB looked like he was going to have a stroke.

Way too early to make a call on the next game, but I think they realized that the Bengals aren't going to roll over and play dead for them.

On the other side of the ball .... you KNOW that Dillon wanted to run all over the D ..... and they just didn't let it happen.

Lets not evaluate any talent in this preseason game we'll just lay down for this one, because we play the Bengals months from now. Yea right.

If the Bengals beat them in week 14 it'll probably be a setup for when they play in 2007.

I'm sure Bellichek hated that 8 game preseason winning streak, who likes those kinds of things???

VThere definitely could have been some possum being played, like not showing the A+ packages on defense, but you are out of your mind if you thought BB wanted Carson to light up his "D" like the skies over Baghdad!!!

Dead on.

That has got to be the stupidest thing I've ever seen Mortensen say.

That said, I'm not at all surprised he said it. After all, this was the [sarcasm]Bungles defeating the Patriots, wasn't it? Can't have those preconceived, preseason notions blown up so early, can we? Wouldn't want anything to spoil the ballyhooed notion that the Pats are a "dynasty," now, would we?[/sarcasm]

A-hole. Y'know, if they'd got their asses kicked 31-3 by the Bills, it'd be all about how wunderkind OC-cum-HC Mularkey had revitalized the Buffalo offense, and how their top D from last year hadn't lost a beat. But it was the bengals, so the Pats must have thrown the game  .

Just how the hell would you go about pulling off a "set-up" to not only lose the game but to totally get your a$$ Kicked ?

This guy thinks that Belichick TOLD his Team to Not play hard but to be sure to Look like you are playing hard ?

One of the Biggest things that Every team Wants to do in the pre-season is to Learn to Win.

And that is new every Year, you can't rest on what you did last year.

No NFL Coach is going to TELL his team to go out and Lose ANY game.

Chris Mortensen is a Moron.

Calm down guys. Everyone has opinions.

Palmer has had 1 good pre-season game. I want to see more. You want to see more. Let the skeptics say as they wish. Fact is they are really right until the games start counting. If he pulls this off against the JETS, let's get giddy.

Case closed.

Actually, Palmer has had 2 good preseason games this year, and had a few good ones last year too

We're not upset that he's skeptical. If he said Palmer would struggle mightily this season, then ok...I could go for that.

It's this off the wall conspiracy theory stuff...

I might have actually agreed with you this time Bax, but for the fact that Mortensen actually went to the very depths of insanity to dredge up a new excuse for the Bengals performance on Saturday. To suggest that a coach threw a game or tried to bait a team into relaxing during the regular season?!?!? WTF !!!

Mort should have let that be an office joke and not actually brought that out into the open. I usually enjoy his reports, he tends to get very good inside info, but that kind of comment destroys credablility.

I for one am surprised we didn't see more of these types of comments last year, especially after the Chiefs game. I still like Dan Patrick the best after he predicted the Bengals would win that game. He had Kitna on ESPN radio the week before and he said he'd go out on a limb and say the Bengals shock the world and beat the Chiefs. The man had a crystal ball in his studio!!!

It just that no one can take the Bengals seriously, yet. Who can blame them after so many years of losing?

Mort should have tried to put more thought into that comment, if its possible for him. Really, by December there has been enough football played that no one will be taken by suprise by another team. Unless Mort thinks that Bellicheck is going to keep his team from winning too many games during the regular season so teams will be shocked when they start play like world champs again? Really, who ever takes the defending world champs lightly the next season??

Eh. I dunno. Having an opinion, even a rather abrasive one, is one thing. Basically sighting a conspiracy is another.

It was really in poor judgement to make the comments he made. He will lose crediblity as a journalist, not just from Bengals fans, too. That was just an asinine suggestion and it was in very bad taste.

A "set-up?" Gimme a break.

WHO DEY!

You hit it right on the head....

Nobody here was going all crazy over winning a pre-season game.

I have read the Rants from the Steelers fans on other boards after their win last week:

Did anyone catch the dominating Steelers!!!

2 weeks in a row the Steelers looked sharp!

Bettis improved with the starters and Maddox is on fire!

As long as the injuries hold out then the Steelers should take the divion with ease

I went to the Steelers game.

The blow-out was worse than what the score indicated.

The Texans looked like a high school team against the mighty Steelers.

Who knows, maybe Thursday's game will be a preview of the SB?

You didn't hear any crazy homer crap like that here after our win.

Nobody was making any more out of it than what it was, a pre-season win.

The Point of this thread is that Mortensen actually suggested that Belichick THREW the game because he "wanted to get Palmer cozy".

That is one step away from just flat out denying that the game even happened, it is Nuts.

You might be right, Bax...if there was so much as an "opinion" in Mort's answer.

If you go and look at the chat transcript this comes from, you'll discover that Moronson is actually answer two questions in the quote posted. The questioner asked him first, what he thought about the bengals blowout of the Pats, and second, whether Palmer would have a better first year than Manning. The part starting with "Palmer has a chance to be..." is the answer to the second question, and Mort basically says maybe, maybe not.

That's not even an opinion, Bax, that's just saying that you don't know.

His answer to the first question, that the game "had the smell of a setup" doesn't qualify as an opinion either. It might qualify as a supposition or guess, but it's based on nothing.

Mortensen's comments are completely stupid.

Belichick may have not wanted to show Palmer a lot of different schemes, but to suggest he want to make Palmer "cozy" is ludicrous.

And if I'm not mistaken, didn't the Bengals physically dominate on both sides of the Ball?

???...you know, I could see holding some stuff back in the preseason, especially against a team you play in the regular season, but wouldn't the Bengals have been doing the same? I could see a 'set-up' in terms of the Xs and Os, but not throwing the game...

Y'know, I think I remember Palmer not only winning a Heisman coming out of college, but being a number one draft pick. Those type of accolades aren't just handed out, they're earned for a reason. Getting him 'cozy'? I guess BB's pep-talk before that game went something like this...

"Ok guys, I've been hearing all the talk about this Carson Kid with the Bengals. Weren't the Bengals 2-14 last year? This kid doesn't have a chance in hell, you don't have to take him that seriously, I know I'm not. I'm pretty sure any defensive play that we call will work on this guy. You guys take it easy now, I don't want any of my boys hurt before the season starts."

I think we're the "trojan" horse (pun intended) even after all of our progress we made last year, people are still gonna sleep on us, especially if we stumble out the gate. It's so easy for people to re-lapse and say, "It's the Bengals, I KNEW it wouldn't last long" or some crap like that. This article just goes to show you.

That's fine by me, take them lightly and see what happens. :player:
