Flashbacks to Bill Walsh?

Marvin Lewis doesn't think the Bengals were wrong in how they handled Vance Joseph's situation with the Denver Broncos.

In fact, he believes Joseph is a rising star who could climb the NFL ladder while he's in Cincinnati. By blocking Denver from hiring him as their defensive coordinator, Lewis says the Bengals could very well have Joseph as their head coach.

Appearing on ESPN's NFL Insiders show on Thursday, Lewis provided some interesting quotes on Joseph, who will remain with the Bengals as their co-defensive backs coach next season.

Thanks for posting, as I was thinking about this article as well and it made me wonder about something.

Lets say 2015 is the end of the road for Marvin Lewis and they replace him with an in house candidate.

Is that person Hue, Guenther, or Joseph ??

I would think that Hue would be the natural choice, but then if they truly feel Joseph is the next best thing, what happens there ??

I would rule Guenther out, but would they fire him to give Joseph the DC spot if Hue gets the nod ??

Would Hue stay if he got passed up for Joseph ??

I'm not trying to read into it too much, but rather curious who they would rather have driving the train.

I think Hue would/should be the logical first choice since he has prior head coaching experience. Then Joseph would be moved into Pauly G's spot as DC. I think moving him to HC is too big of a step for now. And I get the sense that the defense did not play well or wasn't properly prepared at times this year. So one more year of PG is about all they can afford right now.

Alot can happen by the end of next year. Hue could take another HC spot. Marvin could be replaced. Joseph could take over as HC. Unlikely, but not out of the realm of possibility.

I used to think that the "Marvin to front office" speculation was silly. But the more I think about it and reading this article, I could see Marvin moving upstairs. The Brown family is absolutely in love with Marvin. I'd be ok with it too, I think he's got a good eye for talent and player management.

I don't think there's much doubt that Hue is the leading in-house candidate to take over if Marvin decides to ride off into the sunset.

As for Joseph, I don't understand what's so hard about believing that he wasn't all that anxious to go to Denver. First the Broncos FO jerks him around as their token Rooney Rule interview. Then they hire his old HC, who starts trying to put the band back together. Maybe Joseph isn't all that found of Kubiak. Maybe he doesn't want to be perceived as tied to one guy. Maybe he just thinks there's more opportunity in staying here and carving out his own legacy and career path.

I'd really hate to see Joseph leave and become the next star HC somewhere just because Hue is "next in line" and has prior experience.

I would be thrilled with Hue in the top seat. He's demonstrated an ability to win with not much at hand and no one will ever say he lacks fire. I think he'd be a terrific head coach.

Joseph has been a good position coach. Maybe he would be a good head coach.

I'd be ok with Hue too. When Bill Walsh was let go and Forrest Gregg was named HC, I was too young to have an opinion. Forrest Gregg was a damn good HC, Bill Walsh was one of the best HC's in the history of the NFL.

Sometimes, you have to go with the eye/gut test. Either way, I hope when Marvin leaves they make the best decision for the team, not just the decision that's best for both parties. We'll see.

Then what to do with Guenther ?? Straight fired ?? Demoted back to LB's ??

Don't really know. I felt like they were very average once Burfict went out. The Patriots exploited Vinny and Lemur in that game very badly and we seemed in over our heads in that first half. Once they got it together it was too late. They also seemed scared to blitz or get beat over the top down the stretch so people short passed us to death. PG was the blitz package specialist for Zimmer and the D seemed very meek by the end of the year other than the Denver game.

So maybe things will improve during his second year but I am not holding my breath for PG.

Marvin had a cryptic statement towards the end of his end-of-season interview with Hobs. He basically said you won't hear from him again if the Bengals were to win the Super Bowl. It makes be think that he has a plan in place for his eventual departure from the sidelines at PBS. Going upstairs would make perfect sense especially with his son on the staff now.

It's tough for me to get on Gunther's case. With MJ gone and Burfict lost in the first few weeks, his options were jack and sht. Geno was a ghost of himself, Peko is the Kyle Cook of the dline now, Still is junk and Thompson was invisible. Geathers is done and Gilberry got overused. Dunlap was the only guy on the line worth a damn last season. Not sure there's any coach who could have done much in those circumstances.

I don't have any concern with Guenther myself and agree with your thoughts there Hoosier.

Just trying to take a SWAG at what may occur. It's all a crap shoot and speculation, but hey, it's the offseason.

I still say in knowing that Zimmer wanted him to run his defense in Minny, that has to count for something.

do coaching salaries count towards the cap at all ?? If not then why not make Vance Joesph assistant D co-ordinator and pay the man well to stop him leaving? That would light a fire under Guenthers arse and keep a valued coach in the set up whilst also giving some continuity should Guenther need to be replaced after next season.

As Hossier stated above I don't think PG had a fair chance this season with injuries but a wee bit of competition surely wouldn't do any harm at all

It wasn't Forrest Gregg. Its when Brown stepped down as HC and he replaced himself with Tiger Johnson instead of Walsh. Gregg was a great coach and was lost to the Packers.
