Why Not Tyler Eifert?

My guess ??

There are so many talented, productive pass catchers on the team and only so many times they are going to target the #2 TE.

That and he still needs to work on his route running at this level.

His blocking is good and he can obviously catch the ball, but he appears to need work with his routes.

I'm certainly not complaining about him though as I am a fan and how that pick changed the offense has been noticeable.

Makes sense AB. I was really happy to see him get that TD catch and you could tell he was elated as well!

I'm an old timer and was 15 when the Bengals came to town in 1968. Dad and I switched from Browns to Bengals fans.

I haven't followed them as closely as many have here, especially in the 90s, but from what I can remember, this bunch of Bengals, has as much talent/potential than I can remember on BOTH sides of the ball!!

I watched that video and noticed something.

Eifert was simply a matchup nightmare against the college teams he faced.

He didn't have to be precise in his route running, he just had to be close.

He had the size and strength to outmuscle the defenders and routinely made plays on the ball.

Fast forward to this season and there is no "close" in route running. You have to be precise.

Also he's going up against pros who have the size and strength to outmuscle him and keep him from making plays.

I have already said I like the pick and think it set the team up to run the type of offense they wanted to.

However, Tyler has work to do in order to get to the point of dominating the way he did in college.

I think he will get to that point and be a huge weapon for us moving forward.

I honestly don't think its a Gruden issue.

I think there are many weapons that Dalton must work through, making reads and such. Eifert seems to run good routes.

If anything, it takes time to build comfort and trust with Dalton. Eifert is only going to improve. Just don't turn into a penalty machine like Gresh.

He has improved, but it was bad early on and as recent as a couple games ago.

The coaches made comments about it early on and game commentators since.

Don't get me wrong, i'm not worried about him. Happy is a better word.

It helps that none of us expected him to come in and be the focus of the offense, nor was there a need for it. I feel like it's be pretty low pressure for Eifert so far. That will come, though, because everyone who has seen those college highlights knows that latent ability is there. The coaches certainly do and will push him to go there (and beyond).

That's my biggest question about this team, does Dalton go through his reads, or does he throw to whoever the pass is supposed to go to? I often sat here and wondered that, it's like before the pass is thrown he knows who he wants.

I don't have the NFL all access so I'm not sure, but I'm curious he goes through the guys and finds the wide open receiver. The reason I ask is because it always seems like there is a wide open guy, but yet he throws into double team.

That's a fair question. Not sure if we can find the answer. Didn't Gruden used to be a QB coach?

Joe Goodberry has written on this.

I get why they do that Hoosier, makes it a little easy for Dalton, but it also allows him to miss wide open guys, like it shows in Goodberrys photos.

He makes up his mind before the snap, and if the guy is double covered he throws it anyways, because he already made that call.

I'm just trying to figure out why he is throwing so many picks. If he can find a way to cut back on these turnovers wins might come a little easier.
