Marvin & Flags

No, not that Marvin and those flags, Marvin Jones and penalty flags.

I thought it was interesting that he was among the top 10 wide receivers in drawing flags. It says something about how dangerous he may be once he gets up to speed that he was interfered with so often last year, when he was still trying to figure out which end was up.

He's in pretty good company on that list. Everyone, including me, is expecting Sanu to have a breakout season, but maybe we're focused on the wrong WR...

I'm not sure I take much from that considering the limited sample, but it would certainly prove a very handy characteristic for him to exhibit consistently if he can. To this point, I've thought that Bengaldom has generally overrated Marvin Jones for his perceived upside despite his lack of significant production when he was on the field. I am a lot more optimistic about Sanu than Jones, simply because I always liked him more as a prospect and obviously the stretch of good games he had.

I do think Jones is very likely to make the team though and is an injury or two short of having every chance to prove me wrong.

Sanu is the more dynamic of the two for sure and has made better on the opportunity when it was given.

That being said, I won't complain about Jones either.

Take a look at the college stats of Keenan Allen, who most thought was a 1st rounder this year and Marvin Jones when he was at Cal.

Marvin Jones has a single reception in his freshman season, so it's like basically comparing 3 full seasons for each of them.

Interesting stuff...

funny thing is that last year marvin jones and armon binns had almost identical numbers. everyone hates on binns but gives a slide to jones. what is the deal on that?

Binns has a few good games early then vanished. Couldn't get separation. Jones improved as the season went on, he was just hampered by injuries.

I posted those links quickly, but didn't get a chance to expand on my thoughts.

In looking at the 3 full seasons:

Allen had- 205 receptions for 2570 yards and 17 TD's

Jones had- 156 receptions for 2270 yards and 13 TD's

Allen's best YPC season equated to Jones' worst YPC season.

Allen was once thought to be a early first round pick before his injury.

When looking at the two side by side, i'm still very hopeful for what Jones can bring to this offense.

The fact we got him in the 5th round represents great value on the part of the Bengals.
