jjakq27
Watching John Elway's induction yesterday made me wonder who might be the next Bengal inductee in the HOF. I know this topic has been debated here before but it made me think about Boomer and how he stacks up against Elway.Later last night there was a show on Fox about the best QBs of the 1980's. They had Boomer ranked 7th.I am going to list them as best as I can remember. I don't know if I have them in exact order but I think these are the 10. Montana (#1), Marino (#2), Elway, Moon, Fouts, Thiesman, Boomer, Simms, Cunningham, Kosar. One interesting omission was Jim Kelly. I know his best days were in the 90's but I guess I remember him playing the Bengals in the AFC Championship game in 1989. Plus he had been around since the mid-80's. Jim Kelly also started his career in the USFL. So yes, he's an 80s QB. Also, I would have to flip-flop Marino and Montana. There's a reason why Marino has 60,000 yards passing.I hate to break this to you, but Boomer wasn't even the best BUNGLE QB EVER!!! That honor would go to Ken Anderson.I hate to break this to you too--but neither of those guys are going to the Hall of Fame. Boomer had more INTs than TDs.One of the only QBs to throw for more INTs than TDs and still make the Hall of Fame was Joe "I wanna kisssssss you!!!" Namath--and I don't even think HE deserved it!!! His numbers are terrible for a HOF QB. It was Drunk on Broadway Joe's attitude and aura that got him there.Since neither Anderson or Boomer had the debonair that Drunken Joe had--they aren't going HOF.The Bungles player that has the best shot at the Hall of Fame right now:Chad JohnsonI know this may break some of you guys hearts, but I believe that if Corey Dillon breaks the 10,000 yard barrier--he may go to the HOF too. Just for that extraordinary game he put up against the Broncos a few years back alone. Yep, the one he ran for 270-something.
wookie
I agree that Boomer and Anderson will have a hard time getting into the HOF, they'll probably have to get there the way the rest of us do. Ok, I'm not sure how the numbers stack up, but I would like to think that Jim Breech may have a shot and maybe David Fulcher. I don't know...I was trying to think of someone. As far as active players go...I think Big Willie, Chad Johnson, and Corey Dillon have the best shot at going. Dillon not just for breaking the Single Game Rushing Record, but for breaking the Rookie Single Game Rushing Record, gaining 1000yds a season in each of his first 6 seasons, and if he can continue his success and get a ring with the Patriots I say he goes, but I doubt he would choose to go as a Bengal.Namath got there not just because of attitude, but because of the Super Bowl guarentee and victory over the Colts.Kelly is already in the Hall, he started in the USFL and had his best seasons in the 90's which was most likely why he was left out of that list...and Kosar had to be there just cause they needed a 10th. The man had more nose than talent.

jjakq27
Speaking of Namath, here is an interesting stat. After Super Bowl 3, he never beat a team with a winning record. But I guess you get more than enough pub when you play in NY and are a larger than life figure.

They valued Montana's 4 Super Bowls over Marino 55,000 yards passing. Also, I agree with you on Kenny over Boomer which has been debated here countless times. Had Kenny had better success in the late 70's, I believe that he would have had over 40,000 yards and that alone would have gotten him in.As far as the current guys, I think Chad has the personality, talent and the exposure to be considered in the elite of WR's in the NFL.However, the common thread among most of the HOFers is that their teams were consistently in the playoffs and they were also able to win the Super Bowl. Until we reach that level, our players will always have a difficult time getting in.
R-U-D-I
I saw an artilcle the other day that listed potential HOF players from each team, might have been Pete Prisco... He listed one player from the Bengals....Eric Steinbaugh

The man had more nose than talent. Jim Breech and David Fulcher??? Are you serious??? If a kicker goes in, he has to have an astronomical career like Gary Anderson.I think Jason Elam may be considered (maybe because he kicked a 60-something yard FG once). But Jim Breech??? Uh, no.David Fulcher, for his career, was an above average player. He was a real bonecrusher in his prime--BUT A HOF PLAYER??? Uh, no. Jack Tatum he was not. Ronnie Lott he was not. In fact, David Fulcher wasn't even near the same category as these players.Willie Anderson will NOT make the Hall either. Players that are known for taking plays off will not be considered. Plus, playing for losing teams thoughout his career also hurts his chances. If you want an example of players that might have been considered that weren't for this same reason, see ARCHIE MANNING.I still can't believe that Namath was considered for the Hall. That just makes me sick that just because of his New Yorker Attitude, that he made it.

Well with that being said, I wonder if his induction had something to do with how good he looked in pantyhose, if anyone here is old enough to remember that commercial! wookie
Jim Breech and David Fulcher??? Are you serious??? Like I said, I was just trying to think of someone...and I don't go back much past the 1st Bengals Super Bowl appearance, and I was so young, and not living in Cincy, that my memory doesn't do me justice, so I had to go by players I remembered. Willie Anderson will NOT make the Hall either. Players that are known for taking plays off will not be considered. Plus, playing for losing teams thoughout his career also hurts his chances.Willie has taken plays off?? I don't recall that, and if he finishes his career in Cincy and they do well under Lewis I think he has a shot. Especially if he gets into the Pro Bowl a few more times...players all over the league respect what he does on the field and say he was over-due for the recognition. If you want an example of players that might have been considered that weren't for this same reason, see ARCHIE MANNING.Excellent point. kevnz
Boomer won't make the HOF...I mean Ken Anderson should be in the hall, but not Boomer. Maybe had he won a Super Bowl (DAMN THE 49ers TO HELL ) he might be considered, but his career stats aren't all that.Current/Recent Bengals Chad has the chance, Dillon if he can add to his numbers. I also agree with Dr Z at SI about Eric Steinbach. I mean he's a rookie that earned serious consideration for the probowl and I fully expect him to be there at the end of this season. But it's gonna be hard cause Guard isn't very glamourous, plus the hof voters have shown a serious bias about players on losing teams and not having a championship so him and Chad need to get to work and make sure both of those things change. Plus you have to factor in the fact that Cincinnati is a very small market so the players get little exposure on the national scene. Had Ken Anderson put up his numbers for a NY team he'd have been in the Hall.
