Cowboys QB Carter absent from camp

NFL.com wire reports

OXNARD, Calif. (Aug. 4, 2004) -- Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter wasn't at practice Wednesday morning, and the team had no immediate explanation for his absence.

Carter, who started all 16 games last season, came to camp expecting to be the starter again.

The other quarterbacks in camp are 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde, who is reunited with Dallas coach Bill Parcells, rookie Drew Henson and unproven second-year player Tony Romo.

Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones declined to comment on Carter, as did spokesman Rich Dalrymple. Carter's agent, Eugene Parker, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

The Cowboys went 10-6 with Carter starting and got back in the playoffs in Parcells' first year in Dallas.

In his first season as the full-time starter -- after splitting the first two seasons -- Carter threw for 3,302 yards, but had 21 interceptions and 17 touchdowns. He was intercepted at least twice six times.

The Cowboys signed linebacker Ryan Fowler, who practiced Wednesday morning. Fowler puts the Cowboys one player over the active roster limit, meaning the team would have had to have made another move before his signing.

The Cowboys have not announced any other roster moves.

IN REHAB!!

Quarterback Quincy Carter is expected to be released by the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday after testing positive for cocaine, league sources told FOX NFL Sunday insider John Czarcecki.

The move may become official during Cowboys coach Bill Parcells' news conference at 11:30 a.m. PT Wednesday at the team's training camp headquarters in Oxnard, Ca.

According to an earlier broadcast report, Carter was AWOL from practice Wednesday morning, and the absence is not injury related and the Cowboys will be making an "official" statement regarding Carter after the conclusion of practice. But other broadcast reports have intimated that the Cowboys quarterback will be released, leaving Vinny Testaverde and Drew Henson to battle for the starting position.

Micky Spagnola, the station's Cowboys beat reporter, compared the situation to that of Tony Banks three years ago where Banks was absent from practice and it was announced after practice that he had been cut.

This move comes on the heels of unanimous opinions that Henson has been the best quarterback in camp thus far, which had to be at least mildly upseting to Carter, who started all 16 games for the Cowboys in 2003, leading them to a 10-6 record.

In his first season as the full-time starter - after splitting time the first two seasons - Carter threw for 3,302 yards, but had 21 interceptions and 17 touchdowns. He was intercepted at least twice in six games.

Any idea where he might end up?

I know where--picking up suits with Michael Irvin and Deion Sanders at D'everoes. Then calling up their dealers for a nice 8-ball to celebrate their successful shopping spree.

Wow!!! I didn't know the Cocaine Cowboys were back!!! How early 90s retro!!! How cool!!!

Christ.

It's the master plan. If you got an offense that consist of Tim Brown, Edddie George, Terry Glenn, Bryant, Vinny/Henson. That's a solid offense.

A team with an offense that can move the ball, and a solid D

Yeah, too bad Jerry has to worry about retirement pensions rather sooner than later.

Testeverde is terrible now though. I think he proved that last season, when he had to go in for Pennington when he went down with an injury.

no qb for the cowboys is a steal at any point in the draft. They might get 150 passing yards and mb 1 td...thats not good. They are a running team, they have no TD threat at WR...they are pathetic....if any of u pick a cowboy qb in ur fantasy football, just kill urself :(

The most impressive thing about this is that he was cut despite the grief that it gives the offense. The team sacrificed on field performance by cutting carter. Carter wasn't good, but he's a damn site better than Vinny and Henson and some dude named Romo.

I'm thinking that IT'S NO BIG DEAL TO THE COWBOYS. I mean after all, if the guy was Bret Favre--don't you think that the Cowboys would have tried to cover that one up a little??? Carter's been a loser ever since he's been drafted into the league. Maybe this should explain it a little.

The Cowboys still have 3 things going for them:

1. Bill Parcells

2. A terrific defense

3. An owner that is more than willing to spend money to make up for this.

And with all those receivers the Cocaine Boys have signed in the last 2 years, you would think that Vinnie's old decrept ass could just heave the ball 2 feet and let those receivers do the rest.

Carter may have case against Cowboys By Jarrett Bell, USA TODAY

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Quincy Carter, released Wednesday amid reports that he faced discipline for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, could pursue legal options on the grounds the team violated the league's collective bargaining agreement with its players union.

Dallas cannot cut Quincy Carter for league discipline problems; the league's action would supercede the team's in this case. By Tony Gutierrez, AP

"If a club were to cut a player because of problems in terms of league discipline, that would be improper," Richard Berthelsen, general counsel for the NFL Players Association, said Thursday without speaking specifically about Carter's case.

Agent Eugene Parker refused to comment on Carter's plans. The CBA allows the quarterback 45 days to file a grievance, which would be heard by an arbitrator.

Carter, according to several reports, was to be fined four game checks totaling $107,060 — but not suspended — for a second violation of the substance-abuse policy. In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Carter denied using cocaine, although violations could also occur with positive tests for other recreational drugs or alcohol.

According to the CBA, any league action in disciplining a player would supersede a team action.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and coach Bill Parcells never said Carter was being released because of a failed drug test but were vague in detailing reasons for cutting the quarterback, who opened the previous three seasons as Dallas' starter and helped the team to a 10-6 regular-season finish and playoff berth last season. The timing of the move, just days into training camp, fueled speculation.

Asked about Carter on Thursday, Parcells said, "We're done talking about it."

Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple refused to comment on speculation that the team administered its own drug test — which would be a violation of the league's drug policy.

But an NFL official said the team has maintained that it did not perform its own tests.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys say they have no immediate plans to sign another quarterback. Carter, 26, was not claimed off waivers by any of the league's 31 other teams.
