Nervous or excited???

Ever since training camp started I have read that at just about every practice Palmer has been picked off numerous times, more than few times by Deltha O'Neal who everyone seems excited about. So, should we be excited that we might have our first shut down corner in a long time in O'neal, or should we be nervous that Palmer is getting picked off so much. High hopes for Who Dey

No QB goes through any amount of training camp and does not get picked off numerous times. That's what camp is for. To learn from those things. If it continues heavily through the preseason games, THEN worry!

ya hes getting picked off alot but they said hes getting up to speed and is reading routes and DB's much faster now. O'Neal is gambling on all his INT's, if palmer hadnt already thrown the ball, CJ woulda been wide open going deep. They might want to think about adding that to the playcalling......

Im more worried about the minor injuries that are being racked up...stupid ones at that too...ppl need to stay healthy so that we can see how good we can actually be.

I hope Deltha doesn't gamble to much resulting in burnt coverage... has anyone thought of this?

Yup. On the other hand, O'Neal needs all the confidence-boosting he can get. My bet is that Marvin will let him gamble a touch the first few days -- and he can be expected to make some grabs -- and then start easing him down. I think Shanny messed his head up pretty good, and it'll take time to straighten out.

From Bengals.com:

O’Neal has the reputation of a guesser and gambler, and on Sunday he admitted he guessed right. He jumped Johnson and would have been fried if it was a double move. But what impressed the camp people is that O’Neal knew it was a blitz period and that it had to be a quick route.

“You can’t always be right. Against Chad, you have to be on top of your game,” O’Neal said. “I’m just reading my keys. The coaches are doing a good job out there.”

Seems to me that O'Neal can read the QB and receivers pretty well. Let's face it, if he could read Chad and figure out that he wasn't going deep, he can cover 90% of the receivers in this league. When's the last time we could say that about a Bengals CB?

I'm not smelling any toast burning, are you?

I smelling burnt field turf beneath the flying feet of Deltha O'Neal. :P

With the new rule on contact this year, I think O'Neal was a great pick up for us.

Everybody's sweating Carson for throwing picks to O'Neal. Not me. I'm glad O'Neal is getting to them. It's going to make Carson a lot better quicker throwing against O'Neal and his speed.

Amen to that post! O'Neal is about as fast as they come. If Carson can beat him on an out route, that's saying something.

At least that burnt turf doesn't smell like burnt toast. :D

Definitely excited about the upcoming season. Palmer is learning a lot from those picks, and I'm starting to think that our D might just be able to return to form this year. O'Neal sounds like a great pick up, Herring too, and Webster is going to be a monster for us this year (as long as they can keep him from killing his own teammates anyway).

Things that make me nervous:

D-line, is it just a matter of guys being in the wrong gaps like Williams said, or is the lack of a pass rush and the yards rushing per game last year indicative of a bgger problem?

Palmer's progression, is he really where he needs to be in his development to help this team, or will he be a liability?

Team Depth, the little nagging injuries will hopefully be gone by regular season, but if not do the Bengals have the depth on the roster to withstand some losses?

The thing that makes me most excited...having the best damn WR in the NFL in Chad Johnson!!! :player:

My feeling about O'Neil is this:

Since he's been getting INT after INT in Camp, that he's still going after the glory and not playing the receiver. This will come back to haunt him in the long-run.

That's why you see guys like O'Neil having 7 INTs and going to the Pro Bowl in one year, then totally sucking ass the next year (like he did).

O'Neil is a glory hound and that scares me (and it should scare you). I think he would rather have one INT for a TD on MNF then have 20 knockdowns.

This is why I hate SOME defensive backs. They would rather take that one chance for an INT, then play it safe and knock the pass down or make the tackle. To me--this perfectly describes guys like Deltha.

O'Neal is a pro bowl level db. Palmer is either a rookie or a 2nd year qb with 0 experience .... depending on how you look at it.

Now considering that ..... wouldn't you kind of expect O'Neal to school Palmer a couple of times ??????? Especially early in camp ??????

I'm glad that Palmer is practicing against good db's. He gets used to them, and when we go against a weaker secondary he'll pick them to pieces.

As for O'Neal ...... he's coming off a bad year And is trying to make a good first impression with his new coaches. I think it's understandable that he's gambling and trying to make " eye catching " type plays to impress on coach Lewis what a good decision it was to sign him. I think a lot of Nate Websters outbursts can be chalked up to the same thing. It's all OK with me tho ...... I'm happy to see a little intensity for a change as opposed to walking through it like they're half dead.

Now lets see what our resident defensive guru ( Frazier ) can do with these guys. I know one thing for sure .......... it'd dam well be better than 28th.
