derekshank
What's to stop a guy from holding out? Are they going to send the contract police to his house and make him come to the stadium? No. But they get fined $30,000/day for not showing up... and according to the terms of the new CBA, a holdout immediately takes any renegotiation option off the table. In other words, if you hold out, you will lose a lot of money... and are guaranteed to keep your rookie contract for the rest of the season. HoosierCat
It's a slippery slope that would send the NFL right back into the situation it was in before. Not at all. The problem the NFL had before was giving giant piles of cash to guys who hadn't played a down in the NFL. That isn't remotely what I'm talking about. And if you're worried about Dalton being a one-year wonder, there's no shortage of ways for both sides to protect themselves in any deal with incentives, options years, etc. That's what the Bills did with Fitz. Even though a team can spread that money over the term of the contract, it's still a risk. Also if a team cuts a player with guaranteed money still on the books it is lumped into the current salary cap. This next year will be interesting because they say there won't be an increase in the cap. Several teams that are already at or near the cap made contracts with guys on the premise that the cap WOULD increase each year, and now that it won't be, a lot of guys will have to get the axe to stay under the cap. HoosierCat
If you extend Dalton now what about AJ Green? Green was a fourth overall pick and his contract averages nearly $5 million a year. That's not bad at all for a starting wide receiver in the NFL. And it compares favorably with guys putting up similar numbers. Nate Washington, for example, whose deal averages about $4.5 million a year. Meanwhile Dalton, since he was a second round pick, is making way less than starting QBs with similar numbers. It's just a weird situation that I think the Bengals would be wise to rectify, if they can.If it turns out that they can't give him any new money for three years and he continues to be successful, I can't begin to imagine the size of the pile they would have to offer to dissuade him from exploring FA after his fourth year... membengal
I hope it is. One of the benefits of the lockout and new deal was hopefully ending the constant worrying over when to offer new contracts.
