membengal Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I actually learned something I did not know from Lewis' call to Lap and McAllister on Bengals Line on WLW tonite. With respect to the slow timeout at the end of the game, did you know that's not Carson's fault? Seriously. Do you want to know why?Because THE COACHES DON'T LET HIM CALL TIMEOUTS. ALL TIMEOUTS ARE CALLED BY THE BENCH.Sorry. Yelling over now. I had to get that off my chest.Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.McAllister had the sense to ask Lewis why in the name of f**k that was the case with an 8th year $100 million dollar qb who is the face of a franchise, and Lewis claimed that timeouts called from bench and not by qbs is standard operating procedure for the league and that that was something they didn't want to burden Palmer with.Good jeebus. I am pissed anew.I can't wait for ML to get the f**k out of here and the rest of the sorry coaches with him. At least this explains some of the timeout delays we have seen over the years. If I am Palmer, I hope to hell I find a way off this ride too. Quote
jjakq27 Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I can't speak for standard practice in the NFL but it's time to take off the training wheels. The guy's an 8 year pro! Let him run the offense but quit with all the line checks etc. Too many delay-of-game, false start and illegal procedure penalties are a direct result of their inability to get a play called quick enough. As a secondary note, I think his question was legit but Lance is not a big Palmer fan. membengal Posted December 7, 2010 Author Report Posted December 7, 2010 jjak...I didn't get the sense it's "training wheels". I got the genuine sense this all Lewis' approach and that he is far more a game management control freak than I knew. And, given what a f**kawful game manager he is, it is adding to my pissed-offness. And, I think Lewis is flat wrong on how timeouts are handled around the league. Maybe Carson really can be salvaged with some new coaches and a new approach. But this current approach is definitely killing him.Listening to it, I didn't get the sense that Lance asked the follow-up because he dislikes Carson, more that he was incredulous that this was the approach from Lewis. God knows I am incredulous anyway. Quote
DC_Bengals_Fan Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 Good Christ. And that's not even true, I see QBs call timeouts themselves every week. Completely unreal. And you know what's the ridiculous thing? Marvin's known for terrible time management and TO utilization skills. Why not turn it over to the franchise QB, could he do any worse?I don't know about the Tango and the Foxtrot, but some medicinal Whiskey sounds pretty good about now. Quote
BengalPimp Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I mentioned it during the game thread. It's not Carson's fault, as i didn't see any of the coaches on the sideline call Time Out or yell to the Ref Quote
HoosierCat Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 I'm less concerned about who's allowed to call timeouts than I am over the post-game reports that no timeout was supposed to be called on that play. Given the play they ran there was no hope that they would be able to line up and spike the ball with any significant time left. I don't care who is allowed to call timeouts, they should have called it the minute Leonard hit the ground. Quote

God knows I am incredulous anyway. My first thought on reading your post was that maybe they didn't trust Carson or have confidence in him. But it could be that Marvin is just unwilling to relinquish control to his franchise QB. As you stated, Carson couldn't do any worse. As for Lance, I am a fan, but if you listen consistently or read his blog, he has called out Carson long before his recent downfall. But I guess in the end he's right. I too am a little baffled by Marvin's comments. I listen to his stuff and sometimes he is spot on and very insightful yet other times I really wonder if he is just making things up. Quote

Sea Ray Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 The next question should have OK, why didn't someone yell to Carson in his headset "call a timeout now"? They have the ability to communicate with the QB via this ear piece in the helmet thing. This is further evidence that Marvin needs to go. After all these years as a head coach you'd think he'd have a better system to manage TOs and the clock when secs count. Quote
