Seems like the Bengals aren't to worried about having extra fodder around so keeping 80 including those who are considered pup...(Freddy Brown was cut to make room for T.O even though they could have added him anyways because of the 5 players on the practice squad pup.

Aug. 10: Deadline for players under contract to report to earn a season of free agency credit.

The Bengals understandably have a bad rep for holdout 1st rd picks but many times it's prudent especially when you draft guys with a questionable work ethic.

For example Akili Smith. The Bengals saved a ton of money by structuring his contract the way they did and as a result they ending up paying about half what the Browns paid Couch.

Example two was Andre Smith last yr. Hindsight is showing the Bengals to be very prudent to cover themselves in case the rumors of Smith's laziness/weight issues turned out to be true.

Whether they should draft guys with questionable motivation is another issue

Here's another yawn move, but a move nonetheless:

Gresham signed what has been reported as a five-year deal and the Bengals cut LSU rookie free agent defensive end Rahim Allen to make room on the 80-man roster.

James Johnson back, Cordera Eason out

James Johnson is back with the Bengals after signing his contract this morning. To make room for Johnson, the team placed Cordera Eason on the waived/injured list. With the running backs position extremely thin after injuries to Brian Leonard and Eason plus with Cedric Peerman missing the Dallas game due to a hamstring injury, the team had to make a move.

Johnson was with the Bengals in 2008 and spent most of the season on the practice squad. He was signed to the 53-man roster for the final four games. In the Week 16 win at Cleveland he had two key third-down conversions (a 15-yard reception and 12-yard rush) to keep a scoring drive alive. He finished the year with nine carries for 29 yards and six receptions for 47 yards along with two special teams tackles. Johnson was on the practice squad again all of last year.

Before coming back to Cincinnati, Johnson was with Minnesota until being waived on June 14.

Eason, who saw action during the second half against Dallas, tore ligaments in his foot during the first play of the fourth quarter when he fumbled. Coach Marvin Lewis remarked earlier last week that Eason was one of the undrafted free agents who had a good start to camp.

In other injury news (non-Brian Leonard related), LB Rey Maualuga has been cleared to resume practice after missing the last week due to a hamstring and S Chris Crocker said his right ankle is feeling better after reinjuring it while on punt return coverage in the first quarter.

Wow ! I am shocked ! - Bengals website says LUIGS CUT so, you are right.

I thought he looked pretty good last year.

I thought that one of the best centers in that draft was C Antoine Caldwell and I think that he was the guy that they had targeted in that draft and the C that they wanted in that draft.

Caldwell was drafted prettt close to Luigs .

He opened alot of holes for Arkansas.

I was anazed how well Reggie Stephens played the other night - He looked pretty good.

Maybe its an injury thing- maybe they felt that he would never be right again.

Still, with the lack of talent at the OL position , you would think if they thought he could play G they would have kept him.

I guess its a combination of his injury and a the nice play of C Reggie Stephens.

Wow. Just wow. Per .com:

» The Bengals waived last year’s fourth-round pick, center Jonathan Luigs out of Arkansas. Luigs had hip surgery in the offseason and hardly practiced in the spring and at training camp. Since he was waived and not waived injured, the indication is he won’t revert to any lists if he clears waivers and that he won’t return. Luigs played in eight games last season backing up Kyle Cook.

What the hell? I had huge hopes for him being the eventual starting C. Oh well. When you get a bust, it's better to make the decision early on. The Bengals are showing a willingness to move on rather than waste a roster spot for a couple more years (one reason I think Simpson shouldn't be considered a bust yet).

Wow, Luigs getting cut is a little of a surprise, but I guess he simply didn't develop. Is there anyone else that would like to see them use an earlier pick for the interior of the o-line ?? I'm glad they can get some serviceable players, but I'd rather not see them in the business of hoping and praying to find a guy.

I know there are no guarantees, but you get my point.

From the dotcom.

The move came on the heels of rookie Reggie Stephens' solid outing with the first team in Sunday night’s 33-24 win over Denver in which the seventh-rounder from Iowa State played the final three quarters.

“I think Reggie has really progressed and that’s great to see,” Lewis said after practice.

I thinks it's just more proof that no matter how good you were in college, if you can't remain healthy enough to practice...nevermind playing....teams won't wait for you.

Yeah, the reality of the situation is with 53 man rosters you really can't stash folks. This had to happen, although I hate to lose a 4th rd pick so soon. But if Stephens pans out it'll all even out in the end

Marvin was just asked about how much Stephen's play influenced the decision to cut Luigs. His one word reply..."Zero."

I'm not surprised a bit.

And taking things a step further, if my boy Fui Vakapuna! doesn't get his butt back on the practice field very soon I can easily see this type of cut in his future as well. Because while I think he's a perfect fit for a seemingly unfilled position he's simply been dinged too often to seize the opportunity. And they will not wait for him.

Coffman- Cut. We've got the pass catching TE in Gresham. Bye Chase.

Coats- Stays. Improved blocking. Less pressure to catch the ball but when it's been thrown his way so far, he's caught it.

Cosby- Stays. Not sure this is a surprise. Excellent in the return game and can back up at WR.

Jeanty- Cut. Can't stay healthy and seems to have reached his potential in this defense.

Rey- Addition. When in the game at LB has been everywhere the ball is.

Trunzo- Addition? Looks solid. Plays where he needs to be.

David Jones- Stays? Can he be the 4th CB or will it be Ghee? Ghee is a lock. Jones has played well thus far, however.

James Johnson- Addition? Right now I'd give the edge to Johnson over Peerman, both are a long shot, however. Runs hard between the tackles. Knows the system.

Peerman- Addition? Possible he stays but if the Bengals don't IR Leonard, which is doubtful, probably neither him nor Johnson make the team.

Well with Wilson out for the season, my early surprise cut call of Ndukwe isn't going to happen.

Coffman ?? I just don't see it. Coats is just horrible. He shouldn't even be here. Foschi would have been a better option. I just don't see them getting rid of Coffman when this is really his first season and he has a MUCH higher ceiling than Coats. Yeah, it would be a surprise.

I would say Jeanty getting cut wouldn't surprise me either, but then again neither would him landing on the IR.

I have supported David Jones, but he looked like a big bag of hot garbage last night.

With the roster we have, it would have to be almost outlandish to surprise me...

I think you might be right about Jones. He'll have a few god plays but he does get burnt on quite a few as well.

I want Coffman to stay but he's done nothing thus far. Unless he's done something I haven't seen, Coates, IMO, has outplayed him primarily with his blocking and even receiving.

Yeah, Coffman hasn't done a ton by any means. He had an amazing catch on 4th down last game for 22 yards and then he had a heads up hustle play when Simpson fumbled last night to recover. Once again, I just think his ceiling is what will keep him on the team and send Coats packing. Maybe I just hate Coats...

Thats because he has O'Sucko throwing to him, and he cant seem to throw a good ball to anyone. Even when Jordan is there it is not a very pretty thing. If Carson was throwing to Chase i think he would be much better. Im rooting for Chase i know he is not the best blocker, but he has big upside
