chrishcovga
Another good thing is that some of the Bengals are now starting to get some national recognition. On nfl.com Dan Pompei rated breakout players on offense and defense. Only 1 Bengal appeared in each column but its 2 more than you have seen 2 years ago. Eric Steinbeck was named along with newcomer Nate Webster for the D.Also look for Carson to display his skills on national TV on July 17th,18th in the 989 Sports QB Challenge...also look for Boomer at the event. Anyone know what time and what channel that will air..?

Tampa Bengal
Best things to happen to the Bengals..so far:NOT signing Sapp...after getting rid of one PITA in the locker room why bring in a player whose skills on the field are in decline but whose mouth is still in its prime. Not signing Sapp was the best thing to happen.I watched this guy ride the coat tails of Booger McFarland, Derrick Brooks and Nate Webster all year long. Hes a lot of talk that doesn't go far. I don't think anybody really got excited about him going to the Raiders either. If the guy starts the whole year I'll be shocked. We are better off getting Oneal and Webster and Gildon if he signs. ckj414
Getting rid of CD and getting a 2nd round pick in exchange. I have to agree with D'old Man, aka redsfan2, it will be nice seeing Spikes unload on CD twice a year.NOT signing Sapp...after getting rid of one PITA in the locker room why bring in a player whose skills on the field are in decline but whose mouth is still in its prime.Getting a quality corner in O'neal to help fill the gaps in the secondary. Agreed on most every point. A lot of folks outside of Bengals fandom seem to have high expectations for them this season, and I've even seen some dark horse Super Bowl mentions, mostly due to the enthusiasm for Marvin Lewis's coaching. While that level of success may be unrealistic, some people of the fair-weather variety are still going to expect it, and if the Bengals come up short, even around 8-8 or so, we'll hear the same things we've heard for so many years before. And its a shame because the moves they made this offseason were, fortunately, not indicative of a team trying to make the futile quick fix moves of some other teams, like the Redskins for example. These were long term, far reaching roster moves that are far more likely to produce a championship, even if its two, three, four years down the road.I just hope that a 'step back' this season (and with a far harder schedule than 2003, even an improved Bengals team could have a worse record than last season), doesn't give the false impression that this isn't a team moving onwards and upwards. ckj414
The hiring of Marvin Lewis was a great hire. Mike Brown could have f**ked that up by hiring Tom Caughlin--but it's a good thing for the Bungles that Tom Caughlin is a control freak and wanted too much of Mikey's. If I didn't agree with you I'd resent that, being a Giants fan and all. You have no idea how much I wanted Marvin Lewis to replace Fassel years ago. If only the planets had aligned and Lewis was still available when Fassel finally got the can.But I can't complain too much, Coughlin seems to be working out pretty good for New York so far. That team needed a disciplinarian perhaps even more than the pre-Lewis Bengals. And thats saying something...
wookie
Having lived in the NJ area for a while I have been able to follow the moves the Giants have been making. They obviously made national headlines by trading their 1st round QB to SD for their 1st round QB and then promptly canning Collins a** leading everyone to figure that they would throw the rook to the wolves right away. Then they sign some QB who used to be Kurt Warner NFL MVP and Super Bowl Champ and expect that he could start the year and let little Manning develop. All this happened after Coughlin took over and immeadiately started busting heads and drawing complaints from players who were used to Fassel's way of doing things and didn't like the new bully Head Coach. I've already lost interest again...I haven't been able to follow much since the draft and I don't miss hearing about it. Bottom line is you still have to play Dallas, and improved Redskins team with Mr Gibbs back at the helm, and the perennial choke artists from Philly which means that you should just jump ship and start following a young team on the rise with a brilliant Head Coach and the most entertaining WR in the game.In case you didn't already know...I was talking about Dem Bengals!!! :player:

BengalDave73
Well since you guys have pretty much mentioned all the good but one key thing-I will post it.How about the signing of one Patrick Johnson?? Even if he does not get into any passing plays,This guy is going to give us a speedy return guy on special teams.Ok I love P-Dub and I think he is one hell of a receiver but with that said How cool is it going to be not to have him on returns and fielding the ball on the 5 when he should just let it go over his head into the endzone for a touchback? Agreed, although P-dub did improve this year, enough to be one of the main reasons the Bengals beat the Chiefs. That said, he still had the dropsies from time to time and Johnson should improve the return game. My first post did mention bringing in a group of players to contribute to the team and not getting a bunch of over-priced all pros, I was referring to Johnson and Williams and Webster, and I'm way too tired to remember who else right now, so I didn't actually name names but eluded to these players. All of whom I think will contribute to the greater cause, winning the Super Bowl!!Yes..the wookie is also an optimistic wookie and he loves his Bengals!!!! ckj414
Wookie, sorry man, my first 'love' is still and will always be the Giants. I'm not here as a Bengal's hater though, being my new 'home' team, I can't help but adopt them as my 2nd favs. The NFC East is a tough division again, no doubt. Don't count the G-men out though, a lot of things went against them in 2003, some of which were bad luck, injuries, *horrible* coaching, and an aloof team attitude. The latter two are fixed, the first two could happen to any team in any given year. So assuming they stay relatively healthy, I expect them to be competitive all year. Don't get me started on the whole Collins/Manning/Warner thing though, that's another topic all on it's own...

Being a Bengals fan we know all about that. Your save factor in this is that your 1st team is an NFC team.Being a Bengals fan for the last 20+ years has taught me a lot about off season optimism as well. You can't help but get geared up for the upcoming season all the while making excuses for why things went wrong last season.Luck, injuries, and team attitude only make up a small percent of why the Giants lost last year. Fassel was never really that bad of a coach. He got a lot out of his players, and some years got them farther than their talent should have gotten them. The Giants have a lot to overcome this year, new QB, new Coach, still having Tiki (rumblin, stumblin, fumblin) Barber your featured RB, and a tough division. That said I wish you and your Giants all the luck you can muster. I hope you win your division and sweep the Eagles...and I hope they do well in every game but the one against DEM BENGALS!!!! :player:

Well, if it wasn't injuries and a poor attitude, I don't know what it was, because essentially that same group of players was SO CLOSE to being a contender at the end of 2002. The offense in particular looked completely unstoppable. You're right about Fassel in some respects, it wasn't his Xs and Os that got him fired. It was the assistants he chose that caused the biggest problems, especially the defensive coordinator, Johnnie Lynn. For example, before a game last season, a couple hours into a defensive meeting when they were going over the game plan for the coming week, one the players had to point out to Lynn that he was going over the same game plan he used the previous week - the fool was preparing for the wrong team! Thats just one horrible example of the disorganization and lack of discipline that ran rampant during Fassel's tenure. Its far from the only example though. In Marvin Lewis, I think the Bengals have a coach who will always be in touch with what is going on with the team, the entire team, not just one side of the ball. He was a great coordinator, but he now seems willing to delegate authority, a necessity as a head coach. Fassel failed because he insisted on also being the OC, and had no choice but to neglect other head coaching duties. I think the retention of Marvin Lewis is the best thing the Bengals did to improve their team this season. Hopefully we'll be saying that for many years... Well I'm hoping for Marvin Lewis to become to Cincinnati just exactly what Tom Landry was to Dallas...A legendary Super Bowl coaching icon! :player:
