Best Things to Happen to the Bengals

OK, we already have the p*** & moan thread about the worst things the Bengals have done this offseason. How about a few props for the team, too? I'll start:

1. They kept cycling in new coaching blood. Yeah, they brought Coslet back in personnel (hopefully he spend his time scouting the Antarctic league), but they also brought aboard former Raider coach Chuck Bresnahan to help the D (esp. on 3rd downs) and Redskins OC Hue Jackson to replace the departed Alex Wood. The Friends of Mikey" syndrome seems to have finally been quashed.

2. Trading down in the 1st for Deltha O'Neal. Some people may disagree but I think this will turn out to be a bigger deal than anything involving the Giants and Chargers. Say what you want about O'Neal, but we know for a fact he can play in this league -- he has a Pro Bowl appearance to prove it -- and if there's any guy who can get him back on track it's Marvin. I think he'll turn out to be the shutdown corner we've been after for a long time.

3. Resigning Rogers Beckett. It seemed like they had to be almost forced into this, but I was screaming for it from day 1. The guy turned in a command performance in 2003 with 3 sacks, 2 INTs, a FF, and 87 tackles, and how he didn't draw interest (and guys like Hawkins and Bennett did!) is beyond me. Yeah, he stunk in SD, but SD stinks worse that the old Bengals! Between him, Herring, and Williams we'll have the best safety crew in a long time.

4. NOT signing Vincent or Taylor. Overpriced, aging bums. 'Nuff said.

5. STEELERS HIRE DICK LEBEAU AS DC!!!! Write it down right now: we will SWEEP the Steelers.

I love it :D

Best thing....Almost anything draft related....Trading Dillon was top shelf...But I'd say getting all the draft picks that they did...They have the potential to be the youngest team in the league and I think Marvin knows a thing or two about talent and knows how the get the most out of his players...

I agree. the Deltha Oneal trade was great one. Also trading down to the Rams to get some extra picks was smart as well. I think that was the best draft we've had in years. :player:

Optimism isn't my strength guys (really??? no s**t, barb??? ) but I will have to say another year of Marvin Lewis coaching is the Bungles' strength right now. If the defense improves, it is because of him.

Otherwise, you have a bunch of what-if's and untested's.

Marvin Lewis is the best thing to happen to the Bungles in quite some time.

I hapen to like the draft, but I left it off both my worst and best lists since we haven't seen the newbies play yet. When we can judge it a couple years down the road, my bet is that there will be a little of both.

Hey, nice list.

Dillon I think was there best move this offseason because he was nothing but trouble. Getting rid of his thug butt shold make them a better team.

I agree their best move was to get rid of Dillion. I love the way he plays on the field, but his attitude off the field is terrible.

Naming Palmer as the starter was a good move too. You can only have a 10 mill back up QB for so long. It was time to see if he could play or not.

I think Carson is going to surprise alot this year.

I'm predicting him throwing atleast 20+ TD's

The piss and moan thread was probably first because there's been more to piss and moan about than there has been to "hell yea" about. Plus that .... people are just like that.

Good things ........... Lewis' handling of the qb situation. Admittedly, he had a good cast to work with, but he handled what could have been a very touchy matter with ease. Everybody knows whats going on ..... there is no controversy ( in spite of what the press is saying ) and all the members of the team are on board with it Kitna included. Can you imagine how Coslett or LeBeau would have butchered the same situation ??????

Adding Williams to the O line. I think this is going to pay off big time. If Palmer is going to do well, he's going to need a solid line. With existing roster .... drafts to develop and this addition, we are very nearly set for years. Most underrated good thing that has happened imho.

Dumping Dillon and actually getting a 2nd rounder for him. Hard to believe, but it shows how desperate the Pats were for a running game. Can't wait to see him and Spikes line up against each other twice a year.

There is more good, then bad things that happened this year.

In no particular order, the best things that happened to the BENGALS so far

1. Naming Carson the starter......eliminates controversy during mini camp and pre-season.

2. Retaining Kitna. This is good for Carson to have a guy like Kitna as his mentor. And if after 4 or 5 games the Bengals are loosing because of Carson, we can always go back to Kitna.

3. Resigning C Rich Braham. This will help Carson as well.

4. Resigning SS Rogers Beckett. This guy can lay some wood.

5. Drafting Chris Perry with the #1 pick. I said that the Bengals were going to do this way back in Feb. and it came to pass :D I just figure after loosing both Dillion and Bennett, we needed to address that RB depth with an all around versatile back. I think Perry was the best all around back in the draft. He can take a high number of carries, he can catch, block, and make people miss. If they use Perry as a 3rd down back then I think he is a definite upgrade over Bennett.

GO BLUE!!

5. Also signing Nate Webster is good. I have never seen him play, but every article I read on him talks about his intensity and his ability to play sideline to sideline. Hopefully Nate will be the man for a long time.........can't wait to see him in action.

Question to JPW and The Barbarian ........

If having M. Lewis as head coach is the best thing that has happened to the team, Does that mean the Mike Brown has made the best contribution to the team by hiring him ??????:huh:

If I get a yes from either of you, I'll know for sure that hell has indeed just frozen over B)

I think I may know the answer to that...

As my dear departed dad used to say:

........"Even a blind squirrel will find a nut once in a while!" :D:lol::rolleyes:

Best things to happen to the Bengals..so far:

Getting rid of CD and getting a 2nd round pick in exchange. I have to agree with D'old Man, aka redsfan2, it will be nice seeing Spikes unload on CD twice a year.

NOT signing Sapp...after getting rid of one PITA in the locker room why bring in a player whose skills on the field are in decline but whose mouth is still in its prime.

Getting a quality corner in O'neal to help fill the gaps in the secondary.

Loading up on draft picks and, hopefully, getting some young talent to ensure a positive future.

Making Palmer the starter early allowing him to prepare mentally and physically as the starter. Allowing the Bengals to open the field up with their speedy receivers and Plamer's strong arm.

Retaining Rudi, Kitna, and Beckett. Oh yeah, and that kicker.

New Turf...New Uni's

Chuck B. and Hue Jackson.

No real big name expensive players and egos, but guys who come to work and play hard...the Patriots have been able to prove that a strong team can get you further than a roster full of all pros.

Hopefully as the year moves on we'll be able to add a trip to the playoffs and a division title to this list. B)

Another good thing is that some of the Bengals are now starting to get some national recognition. On nfl.com Dan Pompei rated breakout players on offense and defense. Only 1 Bengal appeared in each column but its 2 more than you have seen 2 years ago. Eric Steinbeck was named along with newcomer Nate Webster for the D.

Also look for Carson to display his skills on national TV on July 17th,18th in the 989 Sports QB Challenge...also look for Boomer at the event.

I like Nate Webster. He's going to be great this year for our new Defense

If somebody in a bar told me they were going to get me a redheaded slut and then came back with a glass in their hand I'd be pissed. <_<
