Roy Williams to IR

When guys hang around with injuries, I think the rest of the team might feel like they will be back at some point even though they may not be playing in that particular game. But once someone is put on the shelf for good, the reality that they won't be back sets in. Not that Roy Williams was Carson or Chad but I think the team (especially the defense) took on some of his swagger and bravado. Hopefully the other veterans can step up and keep this going.

Also, I find it a bit ironic that Williams spot on the roster was taken by Purify. I just watched Episode 1 of Hard Knocks again this week and Purify buries Williams during the Oklahoma drill. Hopefully it's a sign of things to come.

As for Simpson....I don't know what to say. It seems like this team has a penchant for "projects". A few years ago it was Stacey Andrews. This year it is Coffman and Simpson.

My only concern with Nelson is his size.. The dude is tiny. His speed is amazing though. Hopefully he can fly in under the radar in certain situations.

Best memory of Nelson in Hard Knocks was when he was on the carraige ride with his girlfriend and the guy asked "what brings you to town." Nelson replied "Job hunting."

He's 5'11" and close to 200 lbs. Plenty big enough for a FS. Not huge and yeah, not the guy you want near the line of scrimmage play after play trying to stuff the run but he isn't a Tinkerbell.

I think Simpson is the long term replacement for CJ at this point. Or a bust. I am coming over the "bust" side of the argument.

Then again, Purify gets on the field in teams, which is not be overlooked this week as Brandon Johnson leaves that unit as they can't risk him with him starting in place of Rivers.

that may be the intent but I find it improbable at this point. I think he would have had to have shown more to this point for that to a possibility.

I was not dismissive of taking Simpson like many here but given this scenario with Henry going IR and Purify coming up, Simpson does not look as viable as once thought.

ML was asked about Desean Jackson in talking about Simpson and that draft. Like Perry, Simpson is looking like one most wish could take a mulligan on.

I think that was the plan last yr at the draft. Right now Caldwell has taken the TJ role up and is excelling in it. In 2 or 3 yrs though, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bengals decide Caldwell's 4.3 speed is better used on the outside though.

Training camp next yr is do or die most probably for Simpson. If Purify does well given this chance, then wow, the chances of him ever suiting up for this team seem slimmer than ever and I didn't think they could dwindle further. Still, better that than having drafted the handless giant known as Limus Sweed.

Who knows - it's entirely possible Simpson becomes a good outside receiver in a year or two. He's pretty similar to chad, physically.

As for Caldwell, is it just me, or, as much as I like him, is the 4.3 number surprising? He looks awfully slow on kickoff returns, and I'm not sure why he's still the guy there (why not put Quan out there, or make B. Scott primary and see how it goes?). He may have run a 4.3, but his "football speed" looks to be in the possession receiver realm. That said, I think he'll be a great possession receiver for years, and hopefully Chad keeps going at this level for another 2-3 years and Simpson develops enough to replace Coles. I, for one, would like to see us re-sign both Henry and Roy Williams. Neither will be all that expensive, and you know if they're healthy they're both more-than-solid in their roles. As we're seeing now, depth is a very good thing.

That's a good point. His return speed does look a bit military medium. When he's receiving the ball though he goes like stink. But you're right, football speed is a different thing to timed speed, as Jerry Rice will attest. Either way, if he sticks with the possession role, we come out winners. I agree with you about the re-signings.

It's a shame but I'm fine with Ndukwe starting he has done fine in Roy's absence... So big trade next year to get Taylor mays? lol Guess resigning roy won't be too $$$ either eh.

Big andre is not on the injury report make of that what you will.

Good we need our best run blockers vs the steelers

Well he may be making reads vs running as fast as he can in a strait line...May also be playing it safe that he doesn't wanna get injured again...Really though I'd like to see them give Scott the KR duty's since Caldwells roll just became alot more important.

I take it with a grain of salt, as Carson has always been a Chatman and Watson booster, too. So, you've got that.

So what I'm gathering is Carson is a bad judge of talent

use your head.

He talked up Watson, and Watson ended up cut.

He said Benson would be a beast, and he is.

He's expressed how much he like Chatman but the guy can't find the field. So he is 1 for 3 on the ones I cite.

thus, take it with a grain of salt.

any questions?

I agree - Scott would be my pick for KR. On this note, though, why the heck do I keep seeing Leon Hall in kick coverage? He is arguably the best player on our defense. This is all the more reason to bring Purify in to the mix - I know teams are important, and Hall is good on ST, but please...get him out of there!

Was only being sarcastic their his teammates so I'm sure he's gonna pimp them no matter what...Though his lovefest with chatmen was a bit weird imo....

He's still a great prospect, but IMHO Taylor Mays has had a very disapointing season.

Well maybe no need to trade up then heh.

go nuts and try and bag Berry. Otherwise, sit tight and try to grab the Mays-lite from Vandy in the middle rnds.

Reason I didn't mention Berry is because I figure he will be going top 10 where Mays would maybe be targeted in the teens...

I too was sorry to hear about Roy L., but the defense has been playing well since he went down. Ndukwe has really stepped up. But the lack of depth in the secondary is a real concern. Only 3 safeties now. They really need to bring in another guy soon. But who? I would really be surprised if there was another Crocker walking the street. Two of the safety types brought in a week or two ago have already signed with other teams. Maybe they should scour the other teams' practice squads for a likely young guy. Colt Anderson, from Montana and currently on the Vikings practice squad would be interesting. He's a bit undersized, but was a great college player and can really hit. Sort of Corey Lynch with a mean streak.

Not a terrible idea... assuming they wait until the week of the Minnesota game to pluck him.
