Nascar drivers ARE athletes!!

NASCAR rookie game for anything

The deal: John Crowley of the San Francisco Examiner says Brendan Gaughan didn't set out to be the guy who ends the age-old argument about whether racecar drivers are athletes.

But the debate won't get far with the driver of the No. 77 Kodak Dodge -- and not just because this weekend's stop for the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series rates as the most physical on the 36-race schedule.

Gaughan may earn his paycheck like a big-city taxi driver -- mashing the gas in an angry pack of bright sedans -- but he's an athlete in every sense of the word. Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma serves as the latest example.

Why we care: Before earning a degree in business management from Georgetown University in 1997, he spent three seasons on the basketball team, playing under legendary coach John Thompson.

He was a member of two Big East champions, advanced to the Sweet 16 one year and the Elite Eight another. He earned his letter as a walk-on, backing up NBA superstar-in-training Allen Iverson, and tangling with the combative guard in practice.

"My job was to be the toughest guy on the court," Gaughan said Wednesday, over lunch at a North Beach restaurant. "I wasn't probably 20 until I thought racing might be a career."

I agree that all racing drivers, not just NASCAR, are athletes. It's a different kind of athelete though. It doesn't involve the same as, well football, but way less effort is used by golfers and they are considered apart of the athletic department in all colleges and high schools.

I really think you need to be a fan to appreciate that level atheletics when it comes to racing.

(Then I'm sure the haters are going to knock which is fine, but they are all wrong).. :D:lol::lol:

I don't think so Josh...only real men who like manly things read this forum. The rest are out renting a copy of "Steel Magnolias" or cooking up a quiche', waiting for the woman of the house to come home from her bread winner job!:rolleyes:

That's not a bad life either Bill. Just replace Quiche with Steak and Steel Magnolias with Debbie Does Dallas and I think you've got a winner!!

You're right again Josh, except I'm kinda burned out on the old Debbie Does Dallas XXX video. Have you seen the new porn release featuring all midgets? It's based on an old Disney movie, and it's called "Itty Bitty Gang Bang!" Definitely a must see for any porn fan!

Semi, If Nascar bores you, it because you just don't understand the concept of SPEED! A Semi truck is a boring speedbump in the road compared to these high performance vehicles. What does your truck do? Zero to sixty in enough time for me to catch a nap!

But I understand. You're like the rest of the population of drivers around here that are content driving their wussy Honda Accords around town without a muffler so they sound like a herd of West Nile Mosquitos!

Gimme a freakin' break. If you ain't got at least eight cylinders of American Iron putting power to the REAR WHEELS, you're just a pretender, and always will be.

Oh, and Otter, try that driving at 200 mph. Can you handle THAT? I doubt it.

Give me a nail bitting game of tiddley winks any day...NASCAR come on around and around and around. How can they be athletes, the car is the muscle. theyre just steering wheel holders. Now if you want ATHLETES in NASCAR the PIT CREW I will give you that , but I will never ever say that NASCAR DRIVERS are ATHLETES.

But im not knocking anyone who likes NASCAR, cuz I like FOOTBALL, BASEBALL &BASKETBALL and alot of people dont and i cant make them, you know what im saying BILLY.. B)

Whether race drivers are athletes or not doesn't really matter in my opinion, but I don't see how one driver being an athlete means that all of em our.

If one IT manager that sits on his ass behind a desk doing nothing all day used to play football, it doesn't mean all of the lard asses that'd rather have another Slim Jim than go to the gym are athletes.

Point taken, but these drivers are much slimmer than most nfl linemen, so you can't judge being an athlete by the size of the waistline!

And you have to admit you have to be a least a pretty darn good athlete to be given the job of guarding Allen Iverson! No picnic to be sure!

No different than a designator hitter in baseball sittting on the pine only to STAND UP four times in any given hour. Then again, since he's playing baseball, he must be athlete. How is a third string quarterback an athelete when he's wearing a baseball cap backwards and charting plays with a pencil and paper? I guess since he's playing football, he's an athelete.

I think it's a pointless argument either way considering NASCAR provides more excitement than baseball and basketball COMBINED throughout the entire show. Athelete or not, NASCAR is a better product than all sports except football; and I watch all of the sports mentioned above.
