jonahdsage
How many of these have we had?Go Twan, keep it up and lead the league in sacks! Carson was the last player of the month back in 05. Before that it was Fulcher or krumrie in the 80s, i believe. 87 or 88.
COB
I wondered how Odom's 16 tackles and 7 sacks would stack up against the guy he replaced, Justin Smith, so I checked and Smith has 5 tackles, 1 sack. 1 sack in 3 games? Odom is a huge upgrade. Someone please try to remember this to use when some industrial tool comes in here and blathers about how the Bengals never sign any good free agents. SupaBran
Can someone tell me how Rey didn't get Def. Rookie of the Month?Maualuga is playing better than any other defensive rookie, as long as he keeps it up I can smell ROTY, just like Keith would've won last year! jonahdsage
The NFL doesn't like giving awards to the bengals unless they HAAAAAVE to (see Odom). They also really hate samoans. So Rey got double dipped. These are facts. Don't ask for evidence.
HairOnFire
This week's edition of Playbook featured the Bengals defense again. Included in the analysis was a clip of Odom's sack against Pittsburgh. Once again the sack is said to be the result of pure hustle, not scheme or outrageous physical skill. In the clip Odom is shown lining up inside, at RDT. At the snap of the ball he's immediately doubled, but Odom keeps grinding and eventually manages to overpower the Steelers OC. Because the OC begins to crumble Odom is able to split the double team block, tossing the OC away at the last moment before closing quickly on the biggest Ben. Odom hits Ben at the waist before sliding down to his legs, where he'almost immediately knocked off by several other rapidly arriving Bengals. Why do I mention this? Because by my unofficial count half of Odom's eight sacks have been grinding coverage style sacks from the DT position, often while working against a double. Kazkal
Thing I've liked about Odom is he seems be great at disengaging the blocker when he's close enough to snag the QB.

Kazkal
I think Sims & Geathers got credit for it.

Whahhh? You're saying Odom didn't get credit for THAT sack?Yeah. On monday I went to the NFL website to look at the stats and revel in the fact that the Bengals are leading the league in sacks, and have the season sack leader on their roster. When I looked at Odom's stats I saw he had 7 sacks. My first thought was, "They must not have updated the stats yet, because I remember Odom getting to Ben."But I went to the official game stats and saw that Geathers and Sims shared 0.5 sacks on the game. Odom got nothing. So, even though it was Odom that got ahold of Ben's jersey enough to allow the other players to get to him, he received no credit for the sack, since he didn't actually bring Ben to the ground.Just another reason the sack stat is probably overrated. Odom had pressure on Ben a lot on the day. Ben was able to get away a few times, and even made a big play from time to time as he tends to do... but it's still better than the alternative we had to watch last year involving Ben standing in the pocket all day long with no concern of anyone getting to him ever. Pidge
Sacks are lovely but what's even lovelier is that they tell us that we're getting pressure on the QB. A QB hurry might not be a sexy stat but they're just as important in getting a win vs. a loss when all is said and done.

Well, that's some bulls**t right there, but I suspect I don't need to bother stating why.But I went to the official game stats and saw that Geathers and Sims shared 0.5 sacks on the game. (shrug) Perhaps it's just me but I think it would make more sense if they deducted a half sack from Geathers stat line after seeing the way Ben toyed with Geathers while juking him out of sack only seconds prior to throwing a first half TD pass. ArmyBengal
Let me ask one question here if I may...How nice is it to argue about which one of our defensive players got credit for a sack ??
