I think I would prefer gold star if it tasted better than skyline.

Have you gold star'ers actually TASTED the food there? Blech.

Tried Skyline recently, wont again. I will be trying Gold Star next time. I'm still partial to White Castle sliders, when in that area since there are none in my area.

My newport seems crappy compared to you Ohio newport >_<

Our Ohio Newport is actually Kentucky's Newport. There's irony there if you've ever lived here and followed the whole Cincinnati Banks issue.

Yep, 20-30 years ago when I grew up in Newport, it was nothing but liquor stores, dive bars, and strip clubs and we were the laughingstock of the entire area. 30 years before that it was all mob run. Now, Newport is Cincinnati's entertainment district (legal entertainment, at that). I never thought I'd see it. I'd like to personally thank incompetence and infighting among developers, the city of Cincinnati, and Hamilton County. We couldn't have done it without you!

Don't say that! In 1980 before my first wedding, my bachelor party was set up in Newport Kentucky at a strip club. The girls were more than accommodating God love 'em. Upon leaving the establishment, an off duty police officer tried to detain us, but he was far more inebriated than were we. We left without a citation, and he was left on his a$$ in the middle of the street minus his badge he was flashing when trying to get us to stop. Found it lodged in the rear bumper of my old Gran Torino.

The old Newport suited me just fine.

Gold Star's much better, IMHO.

PS. Sliders are only good once you've left the bar and you're so drunk that ANYTHING would taste good.

OK, I couldn't resist jumping in on this one. Someone mentioned something about chocolate in the Chili above? Well, as far as I know, they all have chocolate. It's one of the fundamental ingredients. In case you doubt, here's the recipe, as published in The Joy Of Cooking (Rombauer and Becker are from Cincy!):

In a 4 to 6 quart pot, bring to a boil:

I quart water

Add:

2 lbs ground chuck

Stir until separated and reduce heat to a simmer. Add:

2 medium onions, finely chopped

5 to 6 cloves garlic, crushed

One 15-ounce can tomato sauce

2 tablespoons cider vinegar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Stir and add

10 peppercorns, ground

8 whole allspice, ground

1 large bay leaf

2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 ounce unsweetened chocolate, grated

Return to a boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer, for 2 1/2 hours coooking time in all. Cool uncovered and refrigerate overnight. Before serving, skim off all or most of the fat and discard. Reheat the chili and for a 2-way, serve over:

Cooked spaghetti

For a 3-way, add:

Cheddar Cheese, grated

For a 4-way, sprinkle on:

Chopped onions

For a 5-way, top each serving with:

1/4 cooked red kidney beans

Traditional Sides include:

Oyster crackers

Red Pepper Sauce

This IS the real deal. Got hammered last night, had a big pot of this stuff in the fridge, warmed it up, grated the cheese, stuffed my face. It requires virtually no work to prepare, and if you don't live in the city it's a life-saver. Also a great way to get in the mood for a Bengals game! Hurry, there's still time to whip up a batch for tomorrow! (BTW, if you are in a rush you don't have to refrigerate overnight. Just use a spoon to skim the liquid fat off - although, like most things (strangely), it DOES taste better after being reheated).

BTW, you are all welcome

My understanding of the Gold Star recipe is that there is no chocolate involved. Then Googling said recipe, this is what I found:

1 qt. water

1 tsp. garlic salt

1 1/2 tbsp. vinegar

1 can tomato sauce (lg.)

4 tbsp. chili powder

1 tsp. cinnamon

2 dashes A-1 sauce

4 dry red peppers

5 or 6 bay leaves

1 tsp. allspice

4 med. grated onions

2 lbs. ground beef

Brown meat and onions; add other ingredients. Tie up spices and add. Cook 3 hours. Pour over cooked spaghetti and top with grated cheese for a chili 3-ways; add chopped onions for a chili 4-way; or beans for a chili 5-way.

If there is accuracy here, there is no chocolate. Hence the difference.
