BengalszoneBilly
Alot of Bengal fans are concerned about Cincinnati's pursuit of two relatively older players (Gildon and Gardner) that have been released by their former teams. I think I know why Marvin & company are interested...both of these players possess something that any team with alot of young players need:Experience. Young "up and coming" players need these types to turn to as a mentor of sorts, especially when these younger players might not be having their best game. A player who has had admirable success in their past, as both of these canidates have had in their careers, that these youngbloods can go to other than the coaching staff for advice.I don't expect these types to remain with the team for any length of time, but as Willie Anderson fills that role on the offensive line, either of these guys could complete that chemistry for the defensive line, and God knows it's needed there! HoosierCat
Experience never hurts, but I don't think that was/is the primary reason for pursuing Gardener and Gildon. In Gardener's case, he would have filled a clear and pressing need on the d-line, a need that has less to do with experience and more to do with our "atheletic" (read: lightweight) DTs. With that apparently dead due to Daryl's back, Lewis (IMHO, of course) is now looking to spend his few remaining dollars on a "playmaker" -- the same strategy he used on day one of the draft. And in the sack department, we could certainly use a playmaker. Last year was an improvement there, but still not good enough.
Kirkendall
I definitely think you could make that case with Gildon, but Gardner I think could have the opposite effect. We've absolutely failed at upgrading our defensive line.

I'm really pissed about the Bungles not drafting a DT before the 2nd round. That is just dumb stuff--and they will end up paying for that on their Run Defense this next year.Nice job, Mike Brown. HoosierCat
I'm really pissed about the Bungles not drafting a DT before the 2nd round. I assume you mean 2nd day. I think lots of people would have been thrilled had they taken a DT in the 2nd! But I'll note again that, like all draft picks, that guy would have been a crap shoot, and could easily have turned out to be another Gerard Warren or Big Duddy. Not getting a proven FA, like Sapp or Gardener, was the bigger failure, IMHO.What the heck is wrong with Chad Eaton? He told the AP he was 100% and willing to work for the minimum! Hey Marvin, get on the freakin' phone!
jditty47
i honestly am bored/tired of talking about the offseason cuz its still 4 weeks until training camp...thats why i really havent chimed in at all over the past few weeks. Im extremely stoked about the season and it just makes me depressed when i keep thinking about it cuz its so far away:\

redsfan2
Not getting a proven FA, like Sapp or Gardener, was the bigger failure, IMHO. Bingo ! B - i - n - g- o.These efforts ( or lack thereof ) combined with the Vincent fiasco have been the low points of the off season and of Lewis' tenure. I'm not even really that upset that we didn't get these particular guys for the team. Vincent is a little to the aged side .... Sapp is a ... well .... he's a sapp, and Gardner when healthy is more of a threat in the parking lot than on the field. I'm more concerned with the evident lack of info on Gardner, and the inability to finalize a deal with the other two after they had been pursued. It made us look inept, indecisive, and a little to the "Brown" side ..... if ya know what I mean.
chrishcovga
Well you all know that I felt that DE, should have been a priority for us on Draft Day.Duane Clemons gone after '04. Carl Powell gone after ' 04. And together they only had 7.5 sacks, so it's not like we're really gonna miss them that much anyways.---- Whether or not drafted players bust out or not, you still gotta take that chance on a guy when he drops to your lap when he's not supposed to be there. i.e. - Matt Ware Cb, U.C.L.A. - fell to the 3rd round , Philadelphia Eagles grabbed him, most draft experts said that could be the steal of the draft , and low - and - behold he's already beaten out the incumbent veteran in just a few mini-camps.---- I think the thing that ML and Co. love about Gardner is his size, 6-6..?6-7..?, His truly best years were playing next to perenial all pro Tim Bowens in Miami, we get that back in Askew, but adding the big kid from Clemson, Donnell Washington would have made just as much sense too.
