Shayne Graham

The last thing I want to hear is this guy whining about the lack of a long term contract. Despite all of his gaudy numbers, does anyone really have confidence in his ability to make a big kick? Maybe its unfair, but to me Graham is still the guy who missed the game-winning field goal against the Steelers in '06 that would have put the Bengals in the playoffs and who missed the kick that would have beaten the Eagles last season. Has this PK ever made a big clutch kick?

Ok, yeah, he botched the one against the Broncos (wasn't that an extra point?). But the one against the Eagles last year was no gimme. It was about 50 yards and, if I recall correctly, really windy. I didn't expect him to make that one and wasn't really disappointed when he didn't cause it was a tough kick. I'd still rather have him than almost any other kicker in the league.

Dude, you better watch out or his sister will come kick your ass. No joke.

I was kinda thinking along the same lines. I know she's a faithful on this board, and we are happy to have her. Don't screw with her brother.

Which, for the record and not because she IS on here, while I was a little surprised Graham spoke out, as that's not really characteristic of him, I agree with his sentiments. You can point to missed FGs on any kicker, but he's an overall great kicker, and asset to Cincy. I wish they'd lock him down for several years and be done with it.

As soon as a kicker in Cincinnati starts to raise a lot of money for some charitable foundation, they cut him. Graham has been doing pretty well lately so I see this as his last year. If his sister is anywhere around, she should tell him to quit doing kicks for Kids and stay the hell away from Pelphry and Breech unless he WANTS to leave town!

Maybe Fredo needs to learn kicking and start giving to the community. Might finally get his wish.

(NO THREAD HI-JACKING INTENDED!!)

Okay, maybe I was too harsh on the kicker. But that missed kick against the Steelers rankles. The Denver xmas eve miss in 2006 was not his fault-botched snap. But, again, how many game-winning kicks has Graham made?

I think the more appropriate question is: How many opportunities has he even had to do so?

I count three. Two of which were St. Louis' fault. The other one was a 50 yarder in the wind. Can't fault him for that one either.

2004- He kicked game winner against Miami with no time left; Bengals 16, Dolphins 13

2004- He kicked game winner against Baltimore withy little or no time left; Bengals 27, Ravens 26

2005- He kicked game winner with no time left against Cleveland; Bengals 23, Browns 20

Those are the game winning kicks I came up with.

I knew there were some, I just couldn't think of any.

Shane Graham is a douche for whining, since every contract in the nfl is essentially a one year contract. Because the contracts are not guaranteed, generally, you can be cut whenever. And many, if not most, of those big dollar contracts rarely pay out. (see jason taylor as a recent example).

So shut up and take the high average. <_<

Yeah, the guy is a douche for becoming one of the best, if not, THE BEST kicker in the history of the franchise, while setting an example for all the players on the team in his commitment to the community and how to conduct yourself as a professional. Who needs guys like that ??

Shayne only wants what is fair to him and it's not like it was going to cost the organization MORE than what they are paying him now. Maybe less. He just wants the same commitment from the organization and I don't blame him. I will say it's a bit uncharacteristic to hear anything like that coming from Shayne, but all anyone did is "READ" what he said. Was anyone there to hear how he said what he did ??

How things are said can sometimes be more telling than what was actually spoken. I'm glad Shayne is still with the team and hope he stays...

The funny thing is that if Palmer was in the last year of his contract and said he wanted a long term deal, the fans would be ready to lynch Mike Brown for not offering it to him.

Hell... most fans were pissed at the Bengals rather than Housh when he complained about not getting a new deal last year... and his complaints were far more incendiary than Graham's.

But he's a kicker... and most fans feel like a kicker should have gone to Milford Academy to learn to be "neither seen nor heard."

great guy, great kicker. you don't kick that kind of percentage for this long without being great. he's made his fair share of game winning kicks he just hasn't had that many opportunities as of late. Remember, he was one of the few consistencies on a 4-11-1 team last year. you can't take away his commitment even in a down year.

I hope we resign him long term.

There is more to a kicker than fg%. His kickoffs are horrible. Last year he ranked 32nd for distance and 20th for touchbacks. As far as being a clutch kicker, he has made some...he has missed some. He certainly would not be considered clutch. He is dead nuts average and should be paid as such.

Great guy......average kicker.

Every NFL stat relating to Shayne Graham proves this statement to be false.

Why all the hate for Opie Cunningham?

Look again. This time pay attention to little things called touchbacks and average kickoff length. I will save you the suspense, he is horrible at both. Unless you want to burn a roster spot for a designated kickoff specialist, you must consider the good and the bad. I went through the trouble of putting together a formula for you:

some good + some bad = AVERAGE

Shayne is money from inside 40. He had a groin injury that was affecting his kickoffs. But until that happened he was putting them inside the 5 pretty regularly. I know, because his short kickoffs were always a criticism of mine as well. Then he did leg conditioning or whatever he said all offseason, came back, and was getting touchbacks pretty regularly.

The worst thing you can say about Shayne stat-wise, is that his kickoffs are short. The best thing you can say about Shayne stat-wise is he has spent much of his career on the top 5 all time FG accuracy % list.

So again, why the Opie bash? "Is that you, Barn?" (sorry...Mayberry joke. :) )
