4th Round: Jonathan Luigs

Who knew the Chickster actually had a source of insider info?

Blind Squirrel syndrome.

I like the pick. Caldwell would have been fine instead of Coffman. Taking a TE was not as critical as C. Several good TE's still there, not many good C's.

Though the way it is, I am still pleased.

Caldwell was long gone by the time we took Coffman. Antoine went a couple of picks after Michael Johnson.

sure, just saying from the talent perspective. I had wanted Caldwell in that r3 slot where Johnson was taken. Johnson was a steal I had not considered even being there in r3.

What's the basis for the your preference for Luigs?

Academic All-American, Rimington Trophy winner, a team leader, well defined mean streak, etc. And he was described as one of the most coachable players in the draft, the type who "get's it" after only a few reps.

For example: My early concerns about Luigs were based upon a fairly high number of botched snaps I observed during Senior Bowl practices, but I dug deeper and learned it was a common problem for all of the centers there, including Mack and Unger. By weeks end Luigs was said to be more comfortable snapping from the shotgun, and by the time the game rolled around he could be seen firing BB's back to the QB.

Smart kid.

I hope smarts and a mean streak is enough against Ngata

Naturally, I hope you are right, tho I have my doubts

...that and another 15-20 lbs.

Someone will introduce him to WhiteyCastles and Skyline... He must re-learn what it is to be a Meatatarian.

Well let's be clear, I preferrred him over Caldwell but both players were fallback options if the Bengals either missed on the better prospects or passed on those players because better players were available at other positions. That's exactly what happened but nobody is calling the guy a perfect prospect. And you're right....he could use more power. But he was probably the last C prospect on the board with the skills and smarts needed to play this season.

Being from MO I got to see MO and AR play alot this year and believe me when I say we got a steal when we got to take Coffman then Luigs in these rounds. I love the fact we got a TE who is almost as good as Pettigrew who went in the 1st in the late 3 rnd. I also love the fact we got a dominant center if he continues to work hard in the 4th.

Ghiaciuc is still a veteran FA, and to my knowledge, has no offers from any NFL team
Why am I not surprised. That is one pick in particular that was panned from the moment it happened. Seems like something has changed since then.

A reminder, the kid started for three years in the SEC. At center. A league chock full of DTs who are big and mean. There is actual film of him holding his own and winning the blocking battles with guys the size of those he will face in the NFL. That is somewhat different than we had with Ghuicac who was not nearly as tested coming out of the MAC...

The guy won Rimington award as a Junior, before Petrino came in and changed their offense into more of a passing attack on the way to a 5-7 record last season. They also lost their entire offensive backfield from the '07 season, including 3 players drafted to the NFL. I also agree that the SEC competition has likely prepared him well for the NFL. The SEC probably has more interior defensive linemen drafted to the NFL than any other conference in college football. Hell, he practiced against Marcus Harrison and Keith Jackson every day at Arkansas earlier in his career, who are both in the league. If he can get stronger, he should be a solid player and a starter in year 2, if not sooner. Another player that would've been a much higher pick in a normal season and might've been the top C selected had he came out last year.

New article on the official site, but this is the part that relates to this particular thread:

Indications are Kyle Cook gets the nod to run with the first team in place of Ghiaciuc when on-field workouts start May 19.

So it appears, as many thought, that Cook will have all the rope in the world to hang himself with. We shall see how long it takes...

If anyone they put in there turns into anything close to what Braham was, they should be the starter without much thought.

So yeah, I'm hoping for that to...
