We still have some cap space

By my count the article states that there are 11 teams with more cap room than the Bengals. That would include teams like the Eagles, Bucs, and Packers all of which have more than $25 mil. in cap space. So, I don't think you can be too critical at this point about the Bengals not spending to the cap because there are other winning organizations that haven't spent the money yet either.

With the biggest difference there being "They are winning teams" !!!

I get what you mean though...

Why do people expect the Bengals to spend to the cap? I know they had a run of about 10 years where they were spending to the cap, but that time has passed.

You need look no further than last season. Mike Brown traded Willie Anderson, Deltha O'Neal, and Rudi Johnson for a Mike Brown bank deposit to be named later. He didn't do jack with the cap savings. Well, he pocketed it, that's something I guess.

His new trick seems to be:

STEP 1: shave a few million off the cap right before the season starts

STEP 2: say that they are saving the cap money for potential in-season injury replacement

STEP 3: lose a bunch of games

STEP 4: when the injuries come, say that "we are out of it anyway, so no point in spending"

STEP 5: deposit cap savings into Mike Brown's bank account, rather than using it to rework a contract or two

Classic Mike Brown with a new, yet predictable twist on his traditional handicaps he places on his own franchise for personal profit.

I have to lump myself in the camp that doesn't care about the cap room at this point. As we've seen time and time again, even when they pry open the wallet and pull the dollars from SoP's tight little fingers, we piss away the money on stupidity (see. Sam Adams, Dexter Jackson, Kevin Hardy, Akili Smith).

What's worse ??

Having cap space, but not spending the whole amount ??

Being over the cap and having to figure out who to cut when your team went 4-12 ??

I'm ok with where we are at this point, but reserving the right to be pissed off later. For what good that will do me...

hmm?

Sam Adams: I remember the preseason game Adams got hurt in. Green Bay was the team. He was dominating like he always was. Then he got hurt and was never the same again. I can't call this a bad signing.

Dexter Jackson: OK he can't tackle but he was a pretty decent blitzing and cover safety for a few years. Solid signing if you ask me.

Kevin Hardy: past his prime but was serviceable here.

Akili Smith: Dumbest decision ever made...not much to debate here I guess

My point is, if they don't spend to the cap, then its like they aren't even trying.

True enough. But for whatever it might be worth let me throw out a reminder that free agency hasn't ended, and the period following the draft has always been a perfect time to do a little Mike Brown styled coupon shopping.

Ok, Sam Adams. Dominating in a preseason game means nada. He was 33, with 12 years of pounding to his body under his belt, and weighed 350 lbs. The injury question was 'when', not 'if'. He wasn't the best use of funds the day he was signed, which was my point.

Dexter Jackson had a Super Bowl MVP to his credit. He was never an elite safety or a must-have player. He racked up 5 sacks in ten years. Nothing about his career, Bengal or otherwise, distinguished him from any other safety we've ever had, to me. He certainly was never the 'blockbuster' signing the Bengals tried to make him out to be.

Kevin Hardy had a previous knee injury that ended a decent career in Jacksonville. The Cowboys signed him to a one year 2.5 mill deal and didn't like him enough to bring him back. So what do we do? Sign him to a four year 14 mill deal. We got 160 total tackles and 5.5 sacks in 32 games from him. Serviceable? You mean Brian Simmons/Landon Johnson serviceable? Sure.

Yeah. I was thinking the same thing. Pickings are getting slim... but Roy Williams is still available, as well as a very good RT in Mark Tauscher who would solidify the O-Line considerably if the Bengals decide to pass on a 1st round T in the draft... not to mention a decent crop of CB's left.

Yeah, regardless of what we do in the draft, we still need a veteran CB and OT/G, at least. Hopefully, the Bengals are working on some extensions for Williams, Hall, Ndukwe, Brandon Johnson and Jeanty.

Hall has what 3 years left? jjoe has 2?Ndukwe has 2 years left but I would like to see him get his contract done this year since he's a very good starter and was taken in the 7th round....

In today's NFL, you MUST lockdown your key players before they hit free agency. Sometimes you have to tear up their rookie contract to do it. This will be harder to do after now, as we might be on the verge of an uncapped season, but the Bengals have done well in doing this with Whitwoth, Peko and a few others.

They dont need a safety.

They have like 67 of them already

C'mon TJ. You're not playing along at all. The draft is over, this is the point in time the Bengals are most active in free agency, they are under the cap, and the highest profile free agent available is a player the Bengals have already brought in for an interview and has ties to the Defensive Coordinator.

What else are we going to talk about for the next several weeks?

Let's go Roy Williams!

Good times.
