that's what i thought so i would say the bengals are very much still in play for ward, i think i still perfer benson, even though wards leadership as a former super bowl champion would be a welcome addition to the bengals lockeroom, benson has more upside.

Benson has more upside? Are you kidding Benson is not a starting NFL RB. Last year he rushed for 3.5 yds per carry!!!! He only played 3 games were he averaged over 4 a carry. He had 5 games were he averaged 3.0 or less a game per carry. 2 of his 3 100yd games were the last two MEANINGLESS GAMES against Cleveland and K.C. He has a history of getting in trouble which is why he came here,NO ONE ELSE WANTED HIM, and my guess is they still dont.

Well,

I am not as down on him as you, but I would love to have him back. He is better than anything we have on the roster, but i agree with you that the market for him is not happening.

I have looked all over for info on him and I haven't heard a thing. All the teams that need RB's have addressed their needs, we will probably end up signing both to contracts.

They're saying that Ward wants "Michael Turner money", I don't think he'll find anything close to that. That said, I think he's waiting on Denver to come close to the Cincinnati offer today and he'll be a Bronco. It looks like Benson is the most likely to be our starting running back this upcoming season.

Derrick Ward-RB-Giants Mar. 1 - 9:33 am et

The Denver Post suggests that free agent Derrick Ward has lowered his asking price after leaving Cincinnati and Philadelphia without a contract.

Ward, who will be in Denver Sunday, was originally targeting $34M over five years but it's unlikely anyone would pay that. The paper believes the Broncos would make Ward the "1A" portion of a committee with Correll Buckhalter.

CONTRACT ISSUE SCRAPS ARRINGTON DEAL

Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 1, 2009, 9:34 a.m.

The Denver Broncos’ four-year agreement with Arizona Cardinals free agent running back J.J. Arrington hit a major snag over contract language, according to Mike Klis and Lindsay H. Jones of the Denver Post.

There’s reportedly a significant enough problem that the deal is in jeopardy.

Plus, the Broncos are bringing in New York Giants running back Derrick Ward to visit today and have already signed Philadelphia Eagles free agent running back Correll Buckhalter to a four-year pact.

“J.J’s back in Arizona,” said agent J.R. Rickert, who represents Arrington and Buckhalter. “The deal’s not dead yet.”

According to the article, Ward was rated as the Broncos’ top running back target in free agency.

Ward, who rushed for 1,025 yards on 182 carries last season, is looking for a contract comparable to Atlanta Falcons runner Michael Turner’s six-year, $34.5 million deal.

Now, the price could be dropping on Ward. Ward took visits to the Eagles and Cincinnati Bengals, but didn’t reach a deal.

If he wants that kind of money they can have him, all he is doing is lowering the market for Cedric!

Wonder if we will be in play since hes lowering his price or if were just sol now.

We must have been really low balling him if he left without a contract and then lowered his price. I say we sign Cedric back at a discount (He doesn't have a market) and then we bring in a second round pick....Mel Kiper thinks that RB from Pitt will last until round 2!

I mentioned it in another thread, but if you were Ward would you rather run behind the Broncos o-line, who you can go ahead and write in the 1000+ season OR behind a Bengals o-line that has no idea who is playing at what position with less than two months before the draft. If I was the RB, this wouldn't even be a thought. The Bengals would be nothing more than a bargaining chip. What's new ??

To be fair, you're thinking of the Broncos 5 years ago. Last year their rushing game was extremely inconsistent and resulted in them throwing the ball nearly twice as often as rushing it. And Shanahan isn't there anymore with his zone blocking scheme, so who knows what you're getting there.

But I understand your point. You're still talking about a team that finished in the top 2 in offensive yards compared to the team that finished dead last. I know where I'd be leaning if I were impartial...

If the money is close, it's not even a question as to where he'll sign. With JJ Arrington's contract looking to be off the table now, it's a good chance he'll go there. Maybe Ryan Torrain is available. He looked pretty good for them last year before he got hurt, but who knows if it was the Shanahan scheme factor or not.

I read a report earlier that he was asking for 5 years and 32 million.

IF Ward goes for $34 mil or so what he wants, don't you believe that Benson will want the same? I am more worried about giving that money to Benson than Ward. Ward is 28 going on 29 I get that. But he still has fresh legs with only really 2 years of a lot of playing time. If we give that money to Benson I wouldn't be angry, but I just feel like he is going to take it and coast and start drinking again.

He wanted 6 million a season from the Bengals, which is reportedly twice what his agent said he thought he might get at the Combine. They'll get Benson for half of that.

Cedric Benson-RB- Bengals Mar. 1 - 5:59 pm et

The Bengals confirmed free agent Derrick Ward's visit Sunday, but are believed to be more focused on Cedric Benson.

Cincinnati is not competing against anyone for Ced-Ben, so he shouldn't be difficult to retain. The Bengals let Ward leave town without a contract.

If benson wanted to be here or sign dont you think he would of already instead of saying he wanted visit other teams. I swear every year this teams waste time trying to sign guys that would rather be somewhere else. They waste time trying to sign TJ back who probably wants to be somewhere else and now they waste time with Benson. So when all this is done they will have all these holes the probably didnt fill because they were worried about these guys who didnt want to be here. OH WELL.

I am sure his visit is still in progress but it doesn't look like he'll make it back here. I was expecting some good news on a signing today. I am the eternal Bengal optimist, but what they've done in terms of helping the team through FA has been disappointing and frustrating.

Looks like ANOTHER offseason of zero difference makers coming in through free agency.
