cincykent
Bengals.com reported that 4pm Wednesday is the ealiest Gardner can be signed. This could end up being the biggest signing of their off-season if he performs like he did in 2002 in Washington.

WHO DEY AGAIN?
Trotter's young and would be a good add. Plus he's an ex-Redskin. We all know that means alot!

turningpoint
he'd replace nate webster then guys.....also he apperently has slown down a bit and has had knee problems recently... i'd bring him in and ask him to run the the 40 a couple times, and decide on what he can do there... other then thay i'm happy with webster, landon johnson and Miller.i think one of those 3 would be gone. schweinhart
Yeah...the LBs are coming in lighter and faster.Trotter is big MLB.Besides his cap hit would proly cost as much as Ross and Williams combined.

Kirkendall
I'm still not convinced that Gardner is good for this team. His off-field actions represent a methodology that would defy Marvin Lewis' foundation he's built. I'm not saying he's a bad pickup, I'm just not certain on him yet. Maybe I'm making more of what it really is, but I need to see his onfield performances to dictate to me whether or not he's someone to get excited about. Then again, if Marvin picked up Gardner, then I'm sure he'll fit the mold. I just hope it's not a "character rebuilding" project.

I'm glad someone agrees with me here--Gardener is demonstrated time and time again that he's a bad lockerroom presence.I'm not sure that signing all the Broncos' "Bad Apples" is such a great idea (O'Neal and Gardener). The Broncs seemed in a hurry to get rid of Deltha. This could come back on the Bungles.I'm not sure if Gardener is worth the risk.

schweinhart
Gardener will be great as long as he keeps his intensity on the field and out of the parking lots of Waffle House, Perkins, or Bob Evans It's a bad rap to look at him and O'Neal like Shannahan outcasts because Portis, Bert Berry, and Ian Gold didn't stay either.Shanny has evolved into a little dictator and this will be the year the wheels fall off his donkey cart. The Brew Man
Ive heard that Gardener was basically taking plays off and Shanahan put him in the doghouse, of course he never got out....

He's a little weasel who thinks his shiite doesn't stink. His ego will spell the demise of the donkeys...I pray it's this year.As for Gardener, ML wouldn't consider taking him without knowing what he's getting into. He's done it before, and with great success. If ML thinks he'd be a good fit with the Bengals, then so be it. That's good enough for me. cincykent
I assume Bengals.com will report something soon. Broncos cut Gardener 6-1-04, 4:20 p.m. Updated: 6-2-04, 4:35 p.m. BY GEOFF HOBSON As expected Wednesday, the Broncos released defensive tackle Daryl Gardener and now the wait is on to see if he and the Bengals finish off the four-year, $9 million deal that news reports said they had weeks ago. Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said after Wednesday's practice that those reports aren't true, and he's right in the sense that every deal is pending on a physical and signature and Cincinnati couldn't get those until the Broncos released Gardener for salary cap purposes after June 1. Northwest Bengal
I'm not sure I remember correctly, but I seem to remember Shanahan griping about Gardener dogging it sometimes. My reaction to that is: That's not something we in the general public should be hearing from the coach. If a coach has a problem with a player, he should strap a couple on and go tell him. As frustrating as it is sometimes to get ML to give any substantive insight into what he is thinking, it is obviously the mark of a true leader to keep the negative stuff in house and between the parties involved. What do you think we would have heard from Marvin the Great if he had shared his TRUE feelings on Corey Dillon? All Shanahan managed to do was fan the flames with Gardener (and, no doubt, waste a load of $$$ for the organization!). Bring on Gardener! With a coach he loves and a dedicated attitude, the guy is better than anything we've had here since Krumrie (the player, not the coach)! jbengals1
this is the best i could find so far, Two sources have confirmed that the Bengals and Gardener had reached agreement on a four-year, $9.3 million contract that is loaded with playing-time and performance incentives. He would be expected to challenge Tony Williams for the starting job at right defensive tackle
cincykent
If Gardener has the type of year he had with the Redskins in 2002 look for Justin Smith and John Thorton to have huge years. Too bad we didn't get a big time DE in the draft to anchor the other spot. The run defense should be much improved. The Bengal defense has the potential to be good. HoosierCat
More (alleged) salary details...Two sources have confirmed the Bengals and Gardener, 31, had reached agreement on a four-year, $9.3 million contract that includes no signing bonus. Gardener's base salary for 2004 will be $1.6 million with the bases rising to slightly more than $2.5 million for each of the final three seasons.http://bengals.enquirer.com/2004/06/03/Bengals-0603.htmlThose are some interesting numbers...no signing bonus??? Given the player that's probably a good thing, but that makes him completely cuttable at any point with no cap implications. Plus, the 2004 salary number of $1.6 million should be doable without any major cap casualties. The Bengals reportedly have about $1 million of room left after the rookie pool is accounted for, so they'd only have to find $600k.If true, an extremely good deal.
