Thurmanation
I was wondering if a team doesn't have enough salary in their cap to sign a first round pick to what they want and they will not negotiate, do they have the opportunity to sign with someone else after a certain amount of time? DC_Bengals_Fan
I was wondering if a team doesn't have enough salary in their cap to sign a first round pick to what they want and they will not negotiate, do they have the opportunity to sign with someone else after a certain amount of time?Nope. First, these deals are multi-year deals so there's always ways for creative agents and GMs to work the numbers around the rookie pool and salary cap. But to answer your question more directly, the team maintains the rights to the player for a year. If he doesn't sign - for whatever reason - he re-enters the draft the following year. Probably the most famous example is Bo Jackson, drafted 1st overall by Tampa in '86, didn't sign with them because he wanted to play baseball, and re-entered the draft where he went in the 7th round to Oakland. HAPPYJAQ
Good move by Shirley and his agent. He'll probably need the most coaching of any player we drafted this year. Urrutia may have a way to go, as well. With how the NFL is slotted in terms of rookier salaries it amazes me that there are still holdouts. I think that Shirley has to beat out Myers, who is apparently a Zimmer favorite, for the last spot at DT....unless they somehow cut Thornton, which seems more and more unlikely. Urrutia has more of an uphill battle. After Chad, T.J., Simpson and Caldwell, there are two spots left at WR, between Hot, Chatman, Purify, Maxwell and himself. The favorite for one of those two due to his ST ability is Holt, which still leaves a scrum for the last spot.

HAPPYJAQ
Unless he flashes some Dwight Freeney type ability at around 250 pounds, he will be a practice squadder, at best. The DE's look to be Odom, Geathers, Rucker and Fanene, with the latter two having the edge as players with potential that can play inside as well. I could also see the Bengals cutting one of the two, if the right player becomes available (as they sometimes do), once rosters are trimmed down to 53. More likely Rucker than Fanene, though. I hope that Bengals fans can see that they are positioning themselves for '09 rather than '08.
