walzav29
The Bengals are getting such bad reviews for this defense for the upcoming season, but I think this defense is better than the 2005 D. 2005 DT's 2008 DT's (right now)Askew Domata PekoRobinson J. Thorton S. Smith M. MeyersJ. Thorton P. Sims J. Shirley2005 LB's 2008 LB's B. Simmons K. RiversLandon Johnson D. JonesOdell R. JeantyC. Miller BlackstockN. Webster Brooks2005 DE's 2008 DE'sD. Clemons FaneneFanene GeathersGeathers OdomPowell RuckerB. Robinson HendersonJ. Smith The point is that the 2005 D had all of those turnovers. Odell was a huge impact. I think River will have the same. I like our corners as tacklers in 2008 more than 2005. This D will be better coached and has more talent. The secondary was horrible coverage wise in 2005 (Colt game). I think Geathers W/Experience and Odom are an upgrade over J. Smith and B Robinson. Rivers is the key. Wraith
Ahmad Brooks is the key. the only way we replace Odell and David Pollack is to get production from Rivers and Brooks, without Brooks we do not have enough athletisim at LBer to properly execute our defense. walzav29
Pollack really didn't do much. Odell was huge though. I think the Bengals are truly going to surprise people this year. Odell was out of position alot. That is something that Jones will not do. He isn't the difference maker that Odell was, but he is more disciplined. Our LBs have potential, the secondary should be good, but in the end it will come down to the line.On the ends, we need Odom to show his 8 sacks last year weren't all about Haynesworth. We need Geathers to get back to to double-digit sack form.We need Rucker and Henderson healthy and involved to give the aforementioned duo some breathers and keep them fresh. And maybe make some plays while they're at it.In the middle, we need Peko to take the next step.We need Sims to mature in a hurry. We need Myers to be good in more than just the opener. We need Thornton to wear tent-stake length cleats so he doesn't get blown off the line.We need Fanene to destroy every copy of that cheesy-a$$ed Fear the Tiger video he was in.And finally, we need Shirley to pound a bottle of Jack, get behind the wheel, and run over Mike Brown while he's on the john. ArmyBengal
Already been said, but the 2005 defense was able to produce turnovers. If this defense can do the same in that regards, it won't be a problem. However, the d-line is by far the part of this defense that we need to produce in a big way !!! If we get good production from the middle of the line, it will be nice. The other part of the defense we need to see improve in a HUGE way is the PASS RUSH !!! Here's to hoping Odom brings it and Geathers gets it going back in his natural position...WHODEY !!!
HAPPYJAQ
It's hard to compare '05 to '08 because the '05 squad had a lot of seasoned yets (James, Kaesviharn, Simmons, Robinson/Powell, etc.), where this year's defense will be made up primarily with players 4 yeas or less in the league. From a talent standpoint, this year (even without Odell) is probably better. I like the coaches on D better this year, in Fitgerarald and Zimmer. I still think that Fitzgerald was a HUGE, under the radar signing. At least one of the LB's should have a Pro-Bowl-type season, based on his track record alone (He had 4 Pro Bowl LB's in '06). I think the defense will fall somewhere in between average and good.
BengalPimp
I'd rather not try to compare this defense to the '05 Defense. The '05 defense had a ton of interceptions, BUT they were gamblers that were beaten badly at times. These DB's we've got now the CB's especially, seem to be better cover guys, who wont get burned going for and missing the INT's. before anyone says anything, yes Hall was beaten a few times early, but he was a rook and played far more like a vet at seasons end.Another big factor is that a solid pass-rush is just as much about scheme, as it is the players. With Bresnahan gone, hopefully Zimmer will send the LB's more. You cant expect your entire pass rush(or lack of) to come from the DE's....You hear that Bres? wherever you are.
