BENGALS CUT A COUPLE

Posted by Mike Florio on May 1, 2008, 1:45 p.m.

Last season, the Cincinnati Bengals went through more linebackers than plastic handcuffs, as injuries (and a suspension) left them with hardly any healthy bodies.

Two of the guys who filled in have been rewarded for their efforts . . . by getting the boot.

Released today are linebackers Roy Manning and Anthony Schlegel. Manning appeared in five games, and Schlegel played in 13 games and starting five of them.

Well 95# is available

Yea im hoping Sims will take it. Maybe Brooks will get cut & Rivers can change his number 58 to 55. But yeah he chose #58.....

Maybe Rivers can pay that chick off for brooks =)

No, nothing wrong with #58 I was hoping he'd get 55 or 52. I'm cool with 58.

RIVERS' DAY: No. 1 pick Keith Rivers has already opened up negotiations with veteran linebacker Ahmad Brooks to get USC's No. 55.

"But I've got another month to work on him," said Rivers, who wore No. 58.

The Bengals started things off Friday by putting him at weakside linebacker, his college position. But it's all very early and fluid.

"Right now, that's how he best fits our scheme," said linebackers coach Jeff FitzGerald.

That could mean Brooks moves to the strong side and Dhani Jones goes to the middle, since he's going to be the guy presumably calling the plays.

But it's early. Rivers said he's also studying the middle.

Eh Dhani in the middle o_O

Maybe they think odell will earn his spot back quickly so put dhani in the middle,SLB:Brooks MLB:Odell WLB:RIvers I could be happy with that...or even rivers in middle and odell on outside.

PS,everyone better wait on buying a Rivers jersey ;)

Does this mean that the Bengals are secretly hoping to give Odell a "reshirt" year behind Dhani or a better chance to beat him out sometime this season (without sacrificing the learning curve for Rivers) at MLB?? Nevertheless, I like to move because Dhani in the middle will be good. He is the only LB that we had last year that was productive the whole year, is intelligent and maybe the only NFL battle tested veteran we have on the roster. Someone Rivers could learn from. Also, it Brooks doesn't work out on the strongside, Jeanty can fill in without grossly changing your personnel or defense.

I hope Jones plays alot. I am happy that Odell will get a chance to play this year but I would rather have Dhani helping Brooks and Rivers than leaving it up to Odell to be their mentor.

Thurman is the best LB on the roster IMO. He's followed by Rivers and Brooks. Rivers may well become #1, but at the moment, the rookie has a lot to learn about the pro game. I have no delusions about his ability to learn it. :bengal:

From a sheer talent standpoint, I agree on Thurman. I think it'll take him a few games to get used to the NFL speed of play again, from training camp and the pre-season. I think that they should be starting Thurman, Rivers and Brooks (barring injury) by mid-season, which I think will be the best young linebacking group in the league. I am also interested in seeing what Blackstock can do, as he had 3 sacks off the bench last year, playing behind some studs in Dansby and Pace.
