DEFENSE...DEFENSE...DEFENSE...

Gardner,Thornton,Askew, Moore- will probably be our rotation.

Looks lean to me. Gotta be somebody else coming at DT.

I disagree, the lightest of them all is John Thornton. Moore dominated at times during the '02 season at South Carolina. That should be plenty of beef.

"Lean" not as in Where's The Beef? but lean experience wise. That's putting a lot of expectations on in effect 2 rookies in Askew and Moore to play a very key role and even more key if a starter goes down.

Plus, Gardner as a starter is a wildcard, but he's bound to give everything he's got like O'Neal, Porter, and Herring who all want to prove they can still excel now that ML's given them a chance.

I'd just feel better if the Bills cut Sam Adams after June 1 and he became a Bengal, especially if Williams is cut. :(

Call me crazy if you'd like, but I'm not. By adding a coach for nickle and dime packages to coach primarily 3rd down, which is where we got hurt last year, and the rest of the coaching staff we have, we are GREATLY improved. At the same time, our secondary doesn't have the huge hole named Artrell Hawkins it had last year, and instead has upgraded with a Deltha O'neal.

Factor in the fact that we have 2 of the greatest defensive coaches in the league in Marvin Lewis and Leslie Frasier (look at what they did at their former posts), and you have the makings of a GREAT defense.

Our defense is hungry, it has something to prove, and it is extremely well coached. Look for us to start the season in the top 10 defenses and finish in the top 5 by the end of the season.

You heard it here first! :player:

15th.  it'll get stronger as the year goes on.

What he said.

It will definitely not be 26th again, or someone will be walking out the door with a piece of his butt in each hand.

As to Adams......... he was here last year before signing with the Bills and said he'd like to play for coach Lewis. He wasn't offered a contract then, so I doubt that he would be this year either. Don't know why.... just know that coach passed on him ????????? Did anyone else hear why ????

Good damn point.

I change from 23 to 21 because of it.

20 with Adams but he might not be released this year from his 4-year deal w/ the Bills.

He must've shopped for as much as he could get upfront last year. Thornton got the big money with his upside of less wear and tear than Adams from his 10 years in the NFL.

I see what you mean Schweiney... about the inexperience, But Like I've posted here since December 29th '03. There is a list of Bengal players that would be gone..

1. Artrell Hawkins

2. Jeff Burris

3. Oliver Gibson

4. Kevin Kaesviharn

5. Tony Williams

6. Mark Roman

-- Williams will probably be a Bengal for another 10 days, but Kaesviharn's 3 year contract surprised the hell out of me.

Easy there Schwammi. I aint saying your crystal ball is fogged up.

Just if Williams goes and Gardner pulls an ODwyer then Moore or Askew will have to pull a Steinbach or better yet a Briston Buckner out of their helmets.

Not saying it cant be done, but it seems dicy.

All the other upgrades, though, shouldn't make DT as glaring a problem as it was last year down the stretch.

Hey I don't mind being the Schwamm for a minute... , but Marvin is the One that said " If you're paid to start, and you don't then you're out of here ! "

Let's be honest here, He's smallish an 8 -year vet who's only started 2 complete seasons for a full 16 games. In that stretch, all with Cincinnati - he's recorded 7 sacks ?? I'll let you be GM, so you can justify paying him more than 2 million a season and having the 28th rated defense against the run!

I guess I'm too much of an optimist. Askew,Moore,Thornton, and Gardner sound like a good mix. We can always bring in someone else cheaper that'll still produce more than Williams. <_<

I just want every last Brown cent spent. :D

Williams was marked for the upgrade on the Dline from the start.

No doubt that Gardner even if he is half the monster he once was will be an upgrade over anything Williams could overachieve.

But cutting Williams early hands the job over to Gardner w/o competition. Maybe that's the plan.

As for Moore, if he wasn't deemed able to produce last year, how much difference will one year make.

A Day 1 DT plus a Day 2 like Askew would have dispelled a lot of doubts.

I'd suspect he wanted too much money, but in any event Sam isn't Marvin's kind of d-lineman. He clearly wants speed, agility and athleticism over bulk, and "bulk" is Sam's strong point.

Pretty much what I'd figured as well. I wasn't terribly upset that we didn't sign him, but in hindsight he probably would've helped against the run. He had a pretty good year in Buffalo.

As to him not being coach Lewis' type of player, same can be said about Sapp. Makes me wonder why they bothered to talk to them in the first place unless he was pulling a misdirection play.

The Sapp pursuit, I think, was all about the name. Warren may not be the "OBKilla" he once was, but he's still a good d-lineman with big-play potential -- and from a Bengals perspective, was still Warren Sapp. We all saw the reaction from the media and fans of other teams: The Bengals? What is Sapp smoking??? It would have been a landmark FA signing for the team, and would have gone a long way toward dispelling the old myths, IMHO. Whether it would have been worth it on the field remains to be seen.

Again, have to pretty much agree. Sapp at the deal we offered would have been a good signing ( imo ). Sapp at what the Raiders paid and for the lenght of the contract should make everyone ask what they were smoking ???

The more I think about it the more I wonder if Al Davis signed him as a personal screw you to the Bengals, after they refused to part with Dillon for anything less then a second round pick.

If so,it backfired. We still got our second rounder, and they over-paid Sapp.

I have always liked Sapp.

He was a Steal in the draft caused he smoked a little pot or some crap.

But I think that his best is behind him now.

Davis is nuts for the $$$ he signed him for and the lenght of the contract.

Sapp said that we had a deal worked out with him but fuged on it at the last moment.

ML made I statement that made it sound like may that is so.

The bottom line is that we could sign 3 guys for what Sapp would have cost us.

ML made the right move.

Play Offs in 04...
