HoosierCat
Found this on a Titans board, attributed to the Nashville City Paper (I would have dug up a direct link but I didn't feel like registering for the rag). 18-1? Are they drunk? I'd say the chances are about 1,000,000-1 against. But here's the line:Odds for NFL Coaches to get fired this year:Dennis Erickson, 49ers - 3/1Jim Haslett, Saints - 3/1Marty Schottenheimer, Chargers - 3/1Dave Wannstedt, Dolphins - 4/1Butch Davis, Browns - 5/1Mike Tice, Vikings - 6/1Mike Martz, Rams - 7/1Dom Capers, Texans - 8/1Bill Cowher, Steelers - 8/1Herman Edwards, Jets - 8/1Mike Sherman, Packers - 10/1Mike Holmgren, Seahawks - 10/1Tom Coughlin, Giants - 15/1Jim Mora, Jr., Falcons - 15/1Steve Mariucci, Lions - 15/1Jack Del Rio, Jaguars - 15/1Dick Vermeil, Chiefs - 15/1Lovie Smith, Bears - 18/1John Fox, Panthers - 18/1Dennis Green, Cardinals - 18/1Mike Shanahan, Broncos - 18/1Marvin Lewis, Bengals - 18/1Jon Gruden, Bucs - 20/1Mike Mularkey, Bills - 20/1Jeff Fisher, Titans - 22/1Bill Parcells, Cowboys - 25/1Joe Gibbs, Redskins - 25/1Andy Reid, Eagles - 25/1Brian Billick, Ravens - 25/1Tony Dungy, Colts - 25/1Weird odds, I can't see Gibbs getting fired, Snyderbrenner would be hanged by a torch-and-pitchfork-toting mob of enraged Hogs. That ought to be about 1,000,000-1, too. Most of the guys on the second half of the list are safe unless they're caught having carnarl knowledge of barnyard animals, IMHO. Capers is way to high, ditto Martz, neither is going anywhere. But anyhow, just thought the list was interesting...
The Brew Man
Of course it makes no sense, but since the highest odds are only 25-1 I guess its not that bad.
BengalszoneBilly
18-1? Are they drunk? I'd say the chances are about 1,000,000-1 against. They're drunk and high on crack!!
Kirkendall
Seems to me the odds are based off pre-season expectations from seasons prior and how the head coaches fulfilled those expectations and the amount of let down attributed by the head coach with considerations of high profile players; especially the first 10.Thanks for the info Joisey. cincykent
All odds are based on what the public is willing to bet, nothing more. It is basic supply-and-demand. It is not based off of someone's opinion, but the expectation of how much money would be bet. Why they cap it off at 25-1 I'm not sure. Nobody is untouchable in this business, though it would be hard to see Gibbs or Parcells being fired. It seems like it would take some form of scandal for that to happen. I would not be shocked to see a scenerio where either one of them quit, but not fired.
Barbarian
I dunno--I'd say that Mike Martz runs his offense just about as efficient as Drunkowski. It's a good thing that Martz has all that damned talent on offense, or they would have strung him up a long time ago.ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST BACKS IN THE NFL (excluding last year) behind Warner/Bulger??? When Martz tried to make Warner into Dan Marino the year before last, someone should have reminded Martz about a running game. He's too stupid about the pass.I'm mystified about how this guy still has a job coaching.
HoosierCat
I agree, I've never figured out why Martz is supposed to be such a genius, either, but I haven't heard a peep about him being in any danger.Really, there have been so many coaching changes over the past two seasons that it's tough for me to see any major changes after 2005. Guys like Lewis and Green and Mularkey and Mariucci and Coughlin and Mora Jr. are all new, and many of the long-timers, like Cowher and Fisher, aren't likely to get dumped even after a bad season. The two I see "on the bubble" are Herm Edwards and Dave Wannstedt. I think they both have to make the playoffs to keep their job, and since they're both in the same division...Holmgren is probably in the same boat, too, now that I think about it. I think you'd have to put Schottenheimer in there too with maybe Haslet with the offensive firepower on that team.

Agreed with Marty and Jim Haslett. Especially Haslett. His annual December implosions are real mysterious. It's like his players quit on him in a time of need. I can't understand it. Marty hasn't had much to work with in San Diego. Although, I will say that pulling Brees pre-maturely was pretty dumb. You have to give the rookie more of a chance than that.As for Martz, when he tried to make Mark Bulger into Kurt Warner of 1999--last year. That should have been the final straw. That team has had wayyyyyy too much talent for them to get beat in the Divisional Playoffs. Bulger had 22 INTs while trying to be like 1999's Warner. That pass happy Offensive Coordinator s**t sucks!!!
Bobcat Bengal
why are we even discussing this?as long as Mike Brown kept LeBeau and Coslet around, Coach Lewis should get a helluva cushion

It's a long time until September... & that reminds me, don't forget to visit profootballtalk.com and vote for the all-time worst NFL coach. They've been winnowing down the field the past few weeks and both Coslet and Schula have made it to the "final four." But right now, Morningweg is beating Schula handily (tho I voted for Coslet). Don't let the Bengals get dissed again! Our Lost Decade coaches were the worst!!!

Each year since he's been in charge he's went away from more highly touted players of need to draft some serious reaches!! - Who knows how good Kurt Warner could have been, if Martz would have drafted some offensive lineman like the team needed. They actually started John St. Clair at right tackle , that's like having the STAY PUFF marshmallow man doing Balley's total fitness commericals! He's a joke, and he's one of the more obvious reasons why certain Coordinators will never be anything better than that.
