HairOnFire
I'll say what most of you won't. I couldn't stand the guy.
duus
I'll say what most of you won't. I couldn't stand the guy. Thanks HOF. I struggled with responding. I went back and forth whether I was falling into some stupid political correctness or what. But since you had the guts to say what you thought, regardless of timing, etc ... so will I ...This man was exactly what is wrong with western PA specifically, and America in general. The dumbing-down of everything. The first time I heard him on the radio (traveling to Pittsburgh with some 'Pittsburghers'), I honestly thought they were doing some sort of fund raiser and allowing a mentally retarded guy to do some announcing during the game. That is the absolute truth. The guys in the car were really annoyed when they figured out that I was being honest and had no idea what was happening. He wasn't just a 'fan that announced'. He made no sense. I don't care if he was some sort of beloved guy around here ... the young fans are better off not hearing him and not imitating him. Much like the dialect around here, he is VERY BAD for the youth. I never found it even remotely funny or interesting to hear someone talk like him. It's not just me getting old ... I felt that way when I first moved here. I was happy when he finally stopped announcing, and I'm happy that I will no longer have to see/hear him on periodic commercials. Rest in peace? Yes. But the world is better off today.
Pidge
Man, I wish I knew who the hell he was after reading duus's post. Sounds interesting, if painful. Sounds a bit like Ian Wright, a soccer pundit/commentator over here.
Ox
See ya dude. Your towel still sucks, as do your inbred fans. But RIP anyways.

Sounds a bit like Ian Wright, a soccer pundit/commentator over here. I crack up whenever I read comparisons of Cope and Howard Cosell. Yeah, both were polarizing figures, but Cosell was a presence so large that he couldn't be ignored, and his influence was felt across huge swaths of the sporting landscape. By comparison Myron Cope was a local yokel whose influence was barely felt beyond his own frontyard. And make no mistake about it, there were plenty of reasons Cope never enjoyed widespread success, and they don't stop with the weird falsetto voice and choppy delivery that made you think of a couple of beavers chewing on a board. Put bluntly, the man was a sweat act....the type you laugh at nervously from the back row. I think I'm safe in saying this. "Only in Pittsburgh..." Jaysus, an annoying voice and manner of speech.Howard Cosell - known of in the UK. Not just recently either, he's just become a part of polpular culture, albeit in a much smaller way over here. It's telling in the difference of how highly regarded they were though. Not that I mean to speak ill of the dead. RIP and all that.
