dallasfan Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 You guys are probably aware that we're shopping Marcus Spears. He's a solid 3-4 end vs the run, but isn't a force at all rushing the passer (he was taken out on passing downs though). What I'm wondering is if you guys switch to a 3-4, what draft pick would you be willing to trade for a player like Spears? I think the change to a 3-4 is coming (FWIW I think Zimmer isn't a good fit coaching a 3-4) because you guys have 2 good MLBs in Ahmad Brooks (played 3-4 at UVA) and Odell Thurman (assuming he gets reinstated). You guys have Robert Geathers and David Pollack (2 DE/OLBs) and could probably add Derrick Harvey (DE/OLB from florida). That's 4 good LBers, but you guys really lack guys who can play on the line. I honestly think Marcus Spears can be had for a 4th or even 5th round draft choice, if that's the price would you make the move. Quote
Kazkal Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 Doubt we switch to a 3-4,but4th rounder I'd think about 5th rounder I'd give him a shot even in a 4-3. Quote

Plus they don't have anybody to step in his place Greg Ellis is long in the tooth, now I could believe they are shopping Carpenter but I think he was highly overrated when he came in the league. BengalszoneBilly Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 I'm interested in ANY lineman with potential! Quote

And I agree we wouldn't "give up" on him, but we have players who are ready to step in and start in his place. Chris Canty will be the RDE, Jason Ferguson will start at NT (spent all of last year on IR with torn biceps) and Jay Ratliff will take Spears spot (started in Ferguson's place, but has been a DE evry other year). Coming off the bench we have 2006 third rd pick Jason Hatcher (DE from Grambling) and Tank Johnson. To be honest, for a 3-4 end he's been just averege, while we are in a position where he probably has decent value with other teams, so trading him would be smart. Quote

Defender Posted February 9, 2008 Report Posted February 9, 2008 ...but isn't a force at all rushing the passer (he was taken out on passing downs though). You've just pointed out why I wouldn't give up anything higher than a 5th rnd pick for him. This team has been notoriously bad at rushing the passer as of late. Quote
Horsemen Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 I'll take him. Give us him, Carpenter, Terry Glenn, Julius Jones and a 1st rounder you can have Ocho Cinco, Chris Henry, and our 5th round pick. Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Bengals need a play maker and a pass rusher at DE, not another "run defender"...Geathers was disappointing last year, but it may have something to do with a crappy coaching staff and no talent around him whatsoever. The Bengals' could just keep Robinson and Justin Smith if they want guys who play like LB's but hardly make any plays behind or at the LOS. No shortage of those here. Quote
CarsonDaMan Posted February 10, 2008 Report Posted February 10, 2008 Where would Marcus Spears fit in with the Bengals style of play? The guy can't rush the passer and is pretty much an ideal fit for a 3-4 scheme. In this case he's with that kind of team and they don't even seem to want him. I'll pass. Quote

Or is that just Ellis having his annual bitch about wanting another contract?Either way, color me apathetic. Quote
